About the author

Liz Lawler had a 20-year career as a nurse and later became a general manager of a five star hotel, followed by a stint as a flight attendant with British Airways.
Born in Kent, Liz was part of a large family having 11 siblings. She discovered the solitude of writing, after coming home from a busy nightshift in the emergency department, was a place where she could step away from an emotionally and physically demanding job.
She now lives in Bath with her family and writes in any place that has a quiet space.
Her debut psychological thriller, Don’t Wake Up, became a bestseller with number 1 on Apple and in the Kindle top 10, and has been published by Harper in the US and translated into 12 other languages.
She is the author of five standalone thrillers:
Don’t Wake Up (2017)
I’ll Find You (2019)
The Next Wife (2020)
The Silent Mother (2021)
The Nurse’s Secret (2022)
Her most recent, My Husband’s Lies, will be published on November 20th 2023.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2022This book was a wild-card for me. Sounded good and was going cheap through Bookbub and I love a good mind-twister.
And I have been super surprised by the plot, the characters, the twists and turns, and the urgent need for me to figure it out. I struggled to leave the story and put the book down. I kept thinking about it.
A brilliant, fast-paced, chilling read that will keep you second-guessing and keep the pages turning. It won’t disappoint.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020This was a quick read as it's very absorbing from the start. I mainly wanted to get to the end just to see DC Best put into her place as I've never disliked a character in a book as much as her! It kept me reading like a maniac! However the four stars is due to the ending. Before I hit the end I planned on five stars, but two things happened that I didn't like at all. I can't state them here as I don't want any spoilers. But they irritated me greatly! Anyways, a suspenseful read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2022This book is so polished, plotted so well it’s hard to believe it’s a first book. The author clearly knows her subject matter and plotted it like a pro. What I’m trying to say is this is a great story, sympathetic characters, and great action. Just bought two more from her.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2024I had a hard time keeping up with this one and felt lost a lot of the time; had to go back often to re-read so I could figure something out. Good story but ended with too many unanswered questions.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2025Set in Bath, England where time stills and the past lingers, an accomplished young emergency physician embraces her “near perfect” circumstances as she changes from her scrubs to her celebratory dress anticipating a date with her boyfriend, soon she suspects to become her fiancé.
And then Alex awakens to discover she has been placed on an operating table where someone donned in medical scrubs and masks is preparing to operate—- on her! And just like that the story begins to unfold especially when she recounts her story having been recovered in the hospital parking lot, fully clothed, no sign of struggle.
Alex will begins to the journey of trusting herself, her memory, and her skills while battling skeptics, critics, and accusers as victims suddenly appear in the hospital.
Ending becomes muddled and at times the actual perpetrator becomes so obvious that it makes Alex seem foolishly blind…however, it is a furiously fast read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2021This book was amazing. I got into the book right from the beginning. I couldn't put it down. It was suspenseful emotional I even cried towards the end as I rooted for Alex to be found innocent. Just thinking about how it feels not to be believe when you're actually innocent and everything that can go wrong proves that you are guilty when you're innocent is just a tragedy. I'm glad in the end that good always wins out over evil; evil always loses. It might take a while but what's in the dark always comes to the light. Can't read to read more from Liz.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2019When Dr. Alex Taylor opens her eyes, she is hooked up to an IV, is bound to an operating table, and her legs are raised in stirrups. Disoriented and alarmed, she assumes she’s been anesthetized and brought to surgery after being in an accident. But the man standing over her, with his face hidden behind a surgical mask and wielding instruments, is no doctor she recognizes at the hospi-tal where she works as a successful and respected doctor. He’s a stranger—and he’s calmly and methodically telling her how he’s about to attack her. Before Alex can even scream for help, she succumbs to another dose of anesthesia, rendering her unable to defend herself….
When she comes to on a gurney, she finds herself surrounded by her colleagues and immediately reports the attack and rape. The police are skeptical of her bizarre story. And after a physical ex-am reveals no proof of any attack, even her boyfriend has doubts. Despite Alex’s adamant claims, no one believes her, leaving her to wonder if she has, in fact, lost her mind.
Until she meets the next victim…
My Thoughts: A gripping tale that kept my glued to the pages, Don’t Wake Up takes the reader through the horrendous experiences of Dr. Alex Taylor’s life, watching her career and her personal life unravel.
Not being believed by anyone, not even those who were friends and colleagues, had to be the worst thing for Alex. Even her boyfriend is skeptical. One of the police officers, Greg Turner, seems to be more sympathetic, but his coworker, Laura Best, pushes ahead, determined to ruin the doctor’s life, coming up with reasons to show her in the worst possible light.
Only Seb Morrisey, an old and loyal friend, truly believes her. And then Dr. Maggie Fielding seems empathetic and offers to help.
But what will ultimately happen to turn all sympathy away from Alex once again? How will Alex finally convince her once-friends and colleagues to her side of the story? Or will the truth be as worrisome as the strange events?
As I kept turning the pages, following the intense happenings, I finally guessed who was behind it all…and not a moment too soon. A breathless thriller that earned 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2017A good read. A little slow sometimes, but the last few chapters had me reading as fast as I could. The only thing that does not make sense to me is the way nobody believed the protagonist. We find out early on that she is a great doctor, very intelligent, very capable and friendly, and yet when something horrible happened to her, not one person believed her, not her boyfriend or her closest friends, which to me did not ring true. A little predictable, but in general, a good thriller.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad writing and animal abuse
Started out ok, but quickly got annoying with a silly plot and unlikeable, unbelievable characters.
The worst thing for me, though, was the absolutely gratuitous and graphic scene of animal abuse toward the end of the book. There was no reason for it, it didn't drive the story or develop a character. I managed to skip part of the scene when I realised just what I was reading, but as a pet rat owner I found the part I saw incredibly upsetting and disturbing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic read for her first book.
I can't praise the writer enough for this brilliant book. The storyline was so believable, & the doctor being blamed for all that was happening, made you so desperate for the truth to be revealed. I couldn't put it down,I was so hooked. I can't wait for the next one
