Murder and men! Sometimes Ricki wishes she’d stayed in New York.

When Daniel Fuller, a hotshot real estate developer, chases a double shot of bourbon at the Top Shelf with a double shot to the chest in the parking lot, the police arrest Trey Franklin, the grandson of Waterton’s only taxi driver, Mose Franklin.

It appears to be an open-and-shut case:

—Trey has motive. Daniel was evicting Mose after buying his delinquent mortgage under suspicious circumstances.

—Trey has opportunity. He left the Shelf just minutes before the murder.

—Trey has the means—or at least he might. The police determine a .38 was the murder weapon, and Mose’s .38 is missing.

Mose begs Ricki to prove his grandson’s innocence, and at first, she refuses. But after talking to Trey, she agrees and sets out to find the real killer.

That should be enough to keep Ricki busy, but she’s got more than a murder to solve. Gabriel Russell, the hunky detective who left town to think about their relationship, is back. He wants to pick up where they left off, but Logan Parker, owner/editor of the local paper, wants to fill the vacancy left by Gabe. That’s problem enough, but the real problem is that Ricki wants them both.

I write cozy mysteries and romances as Lolli Powell, as well as grittier mysteries and thrillers as Laurel Heidtman. I live with my husband, two cats, and a big goofy dog named Buster on private land surrounded by Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. Over the years, I've paid the bills by being a dancer, a bartender, a police officer, a registered nurse and a technical writer. I draw on that life experience and my two English degrees to create stories that I enjoy writing and hope readers will enjoy reading.

Ricki has her hands full in this one. Not only does she have to prove a man's (her friend's) innocence of murder--she also has man trouble. She has to decide which one she would rather date--not as easy as it sounds!! Is Ricki able to figure out who the real killer is------and who is the lucky guy who gets to be her boyfriend? Lots going on, twists and turns, and Ricki is lucky she makes it out alive!!!!

    Ricki owns a bar left to her by her late uncle. She's been working on changing it from the worst dive bar in town to a place where people want to go to eat and drink without being interrupted by fights breaking out. She's done a good job at that, but she's got a bit of a problem with her customers. They keep dying on the premises, and her detective boyfriend gets very upset when she looks into why. He's taken off and she starts working with a reporter friend to solve the latest crime(s). Lots more than a murder has been going on in her sleepy little town, and she nearly ends up a victim. Good story with lots of leads and red herrings and more than the obvious local people involved. Plus the characters are real, not perfect and not always logical or nice. Two thumbs up!

    The Top Shelf Mysteries just keep getting better and better. Ricki keeps running into dead bodies, but this time her evolvement is at the request of the accused father. As she tries to help Trey and Mose, she finds links to organized crime, real state and banking fraud, federal agents and way way too many men. This series never disappoints, the cast of characters, the interactions, the plotting and writing are all top notch.

    Ricki not only is in the middle of solving a murder, but also is in the middle of a three way (and possibly four way) love triangle/rectangle! She almost gets killed by the murder culprit and is saved by Irish mafia muscle. Why was Butch looking out for her anyway (I must have missed the explanation)? And, she decides to go forward with Logan. I agree with her choice!

    I love the series! The storyline moves quickly and the author does a fantastic job keeping your attention. I would hate to live in Waterton and know Ricki (the main character). Trouble, or should I say murders, seems to follow her. Yet she always seems to land on her feet. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

    It has been over a year since the last top shelf mystery came out; I was happy to pre-order, and glad I did. With the pandemic, I have been reading a lot, and making good use of my kindle and KU. However, many of the books leave a lot to be desired. Immediately, you can tell the difference in Lolli Powell’s writing. First her humor sets her apart. If you read the other books in the series, you will be immediately brought back up to speed when you start reading. Yes,, another murder, this one in the Top Shelf’s parking lot. I figured out The Who and why early on, but still kept my interest. So much better than when the author leaves no clues to the murderer. In the last book, hot detective Gabe, said he needed the time away from Ricki. With no word from Gabe, Logan is back, and wants to step in. Ricki looks at Logan in a new light, and of course Gabe returns and wants forgiveness. Now Ricki has to decide, since she realizes she likes them both! Love Lolli Powell’s humor, the characters are well developed and this is one you will enjoy!
