Dragon's Jaw (Vietnam Ground Zero Military Thrillers Book 16) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 535 ratings

The U.S. Army Special Forces and the U.S. Air Force join forces for an explosive mission in North Vietnam! Perfect for fans of Andrew Watts, L. T. Ryan, Don Keith and George Wallace.

Captain Gerber’s Green Berets have orders to destroy the Dragon’s Jaw…

Vietnam, 1968

Known as the Dragon’s Jaw, the Thanh Hoa bridge stretching across the Song Ma River is a vital link in North Vietnam’s supply line of soldiers, arms, ammunition and equipment to the South.

The U.S. Air Force plan to bomb it out of existence.

But the Americans are thwarted by heavy antiaircraft artillery and radar-guided weapon emplacements defending the site.

When a sneak-and-peek mission into the heart of enemy territory reveals that the bridge can’t be destroyed from the ground, U.S. Army Special Forces
Captain Mack Gerber and Master Sergeant Anthony Fetterman lead a team of Green Berets on a covert night-time operation to take out the big guns, leaving the way clear for the Air Force bombers.

But as the airstrike on the bridge gets underway, an American news crew suddenly turn up … right in the path of the bombs.

Dragon’s Jaw by Eric Helm deserves a 5 ⭐️ rating in part because it depicted the press (Fourth Estate) as the antagonist. While the government at that time created policy it was heavily influenced by the press, which should not be the case. The protests were not as much about the Vietnam war but about the draft. (Yes I alive during that time) A reporter’s job should be to report the facts not their own opinions. Thus the people they continually refer to as deserving to know the truth only receive reporter’s opinions. The demonstrations in the US were not as much about the Vietnam was but the true fear of being drafted. The focus of reporting should have been on the draft not the war. Perhaps the outcome would have been different. In this novel had the press released the entire story many American lives would have been lost. Even in 2024 with a presidential election this year the press continues to report opinion as fact.
Dragon’s Jaw by Eric Helm continues to follow the protagonist Gerber and his team as they fight communism in the form of not just North Vietnam but their “advisors“ Russia and China. They are also fighting government policy and its agencies, along with the press. Although reporter Robin Morrow has become the exception to the rule it was because she went into the field with Gerber’s men, fought alongside them and was captured and tortured, including raped. She was one of few reporters who did so. (Have attempted to to research actual numbers of embedded press but cannot find any factual numbers.) Gerber and his men are not only brave but true soldiers. They follow orders even when the orders make no sense and often no difference.
Is it all factual? I don’t know, I was not a soldier in that war. My son was in active combat in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, (whose initial goals were to train the Afghan National Security Forces(ANSF) and assist Afghanistan in rebuilding key government institutions after the fall of the Taliban regime in December 2001. However, coalition forces were gradually involved in the broader war as well, as Taliban resistance.) My son’s 82nd Airborne team fought its way into their compound in the Southern Helmand province and fought to keep it everyday. They built a school which the Taliban destroyed within a week, killing students and teachers. The Afghans feared the Taliban too much to truly defend themselves. (Sound familiar?) In an earlier book Ville Helm referred to a similar concept in Vietnam which failed also. As Albert Einstein said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result,” thus defining both the government and military as INSANE!
Great read. Highly recommend the entire series.

Actual stories like this could have and possibly did happen. There are many missions that were and still classified. Granted this book is fiction but still enjoyable to read.

As others in this series well researched and a good character development . Easy fast reading both because of the writers talent and also the the subject matter. Anyone who likes military will enjoy this series and author.

Rail road and highway span that are feeding men and supplies to their forces in South Vietnam Nam.

Seventy percent. I got that far and just could not go on. Not much context in this book. A real lack of connection for me....me, reader of all thing’s flying.
Maybe you’re a better man than
    Me, gunga deen.

Eric Helm is the pseudonym of two Vietnam war veterans. They tell it like it was, a great read.
