The Boy Who Dreamt the World: The Daydreamer Chronicles (A Fantasy Adventure) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 206 ratings

You would think being able to control your dreams would be fun. But in a place where those dreams can take on a life of their own and nightmares stalk the streets, just making it through the night is hard enough.

There are two worlds that have always lived peacefully alongside each other, the world we know and the Dreamworld, Reverie. Adam's life takes a definite turn for the strange when he discovers that, as a Daydreamer, he can travel between the two and achieve impossible things. But nothing in the Dreamworld is as straightforward as it looks. There is something terrible threatening to pull the two worlds apart and Adam and his newly discovered friends are the only ones who can stop it.

As if having to save the world wasn’t already hard enough, there are detentions to avoid, a mystery surrounding the odd new girl in his class to solve, and the fact that Adam has absolutely no idea how to control his unusual powers.

Described by Readers Favourites as 'a story with heart, mystery, danger, friendship, and intrigue in a place where dreams come to life and anything is possible.' 'The Boy Who Dreamt the World' is the award winning first book in an exciting Middle Grade fantasy series, perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Charlie Bone.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

When he is not spending too much time in his own head, Jethro lives with an extremely patient wife, two very lively children, and two cats (one of which may now be the oldest living cat in the world, held together entirely by fluff and stubbornness). Recently a dog has also been added to the collection.

Writing provides a pleasant way to pass the time whenever the TV remote has been commandeered by another member of the household (which seems to be most of the time).

Adam is a pretty normal kid whose only hobby is crafting imaginary adventures with his mom. But then Mum disappears, and Adam is transported to a dream world where folks with big imaginations have the power to change everything. Adam finally has the chance to find out what happened to his mom, but nightmarish forces will do anything to stop him.

What a delightful adventure! The storytelling is fun and humorous at times, and I really like Adam as a character. The plot is zesty and full of imagination. My only real complaint is that some of the sentences were obtuse or poorly punctuated. This book could have benefited from a few more rounds of professional copyediting and proofreading. I can't decide if I want to read the sequel or not. I really like the story, but typos are my nemesis.

We have all had dreams that seem to more than dreams and this book might just be the answer to why. The stories may be different but having grown up loving all the tales of OZ I found myself feeling the same sense of wonder as I was introduced to the denizens of this land.

This book started out slow, but got better once the adventures kicked in. The characters are all unique and likable in their own way ( except for the bad guys who really are bad). There are mysteries, scary ( but not too scary) events, suspense, trusts, acceptance of differences, and friendships. It brings up the question of the dream world bridging into the waking world and their relative substance or reality. The main character is a boy who finds courage in unselfishness. It’s about how goodness is the light which triumphs over evil and darkness.

I’d say this book would be enjoyed by 4 th graders on up. I’m 70 and I enjoyed it. There are fun ideas like flying and saving the world done in both worlds. A worthy read.

I like the concept of the story, but the delivery could be better. I'm hoping that there will be more explanation in the books to come.

In this wonderful fantasy novel (geared for children with a middle school reading level), we follow Adam an imaginative young boy, who at first unknowingly travels to the world of dreams and nightmares. It's all a fun adventure until the nightmares, called the Horror, makes its presence know in the waking world.

I was emailed a kindle version from the author last week for a review. I was absolutely sucked in from the first chapter. Miss Grudge reminded me of one of my teachers in middle school. I loved pretty much everything about this novel! From Adam and Charlie's friendship, to the shocks and twists of the plot. What a cliffhanger! I'm so excited to continue the series.

This was a light, fun and entertaining read. It had just enough characters, and the concept was great. I particularly liked some of the "dreamy feels" the author created in certain scenes, like that feeling of not being able to pull away from something you dread. Also enjoyed the characters, and the imaginary elements, such as The Weave (not going to spoil what that is). The author certainly had fun, and I got the feeling that the sky is the limit (if even that is the case). The story's concept certainly made my mind work, and has HUGE potential. A boy that can essentially live twice as long as all of us, because he gets to enjoy our world by day and an alternate one while asleep!

All that being said, this particular storyline wasn't hard to figure out. Therefore, I am going to reserve my fifth star until I see where the author takes this next. While it was fascinating to ponder the complications that are inherent in toggling between two worlds, particularly in the midst of an urgent mission, the author only barely exploited this. There seemed to be more transitions early on, but far less once that idea became interesting.

All-in-all a nice first book, setting itself up perfectly for more. And since the author has already written more, I suspect that fifth star is a short read away!

Read the book during a stressful period, and felt I didn't give it the respect it deserved.
Each time I put it down I came back as soon as possible.
The story is solid, the characters likable, the magic is not complicated and the 'science' is easily defined.
I will be endeavoring to acquire the nix book in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting fantasy adventure
Reviewed in Australia on September 18, 2021
The Boy Who Dreamt the World is an exciting fantasy adventure for 9 to 12 year olds. It follows Adam, a young boy who is too old for bedtime stories but who enjoys the stories his mum tells him and thinks about stories at school when he should be concentrating. When he falls asleep he starts to visit the Dreamworld called Reverie and soon he is in the middle of an adventure where he must save the relationship that exists between the Dreamworld and the real one.

This story is set half in fantasy and half in the normal world of school, detentions and friends which makes it an interesting blend. Adam is a likeable character who though he has his problems, really cares about his friends and shows true courage in his actions. There is also a variety of other characters and monsters to keep readers entertained. The book contains some scary scenes but no more frightening than the first Harry Potter book. What I really liked was the clever incorporation of dreams, sleepwalking, nightmares and other related phenomena into a fantasy world that made sense.

I think the book is at a good level for 9 to 12 year olds and has a rich vocabulary which will educate younger readers. One thing I would have liked is for some more of Adam’s back story that would have provided better context but maybe that will be revealed in the subsequent books. Perhaps this could have been expanded on when he is talking to Maman.

Overall I enjoyed this first book in The Daydreamer Chronicles series and I’m sure kids will too. It has good messages about friendship and courage. There is also plenty of mystery and excitement to keep readers engaged. I would certainly recommend it for fantasy lovers in the target age range.

Better than Harry Potter! I loved this tale of adventure in an alternate reality. It brought dreaming to life, and was full of wonderful imaginative characters. I'm looking forward to reading part 2. I can't wait to find out what happens next. I think this is suitable for all to enjoy. Scary in places but not horrific.
