4.2 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

At thirteen, no one should witness the death of a parent, but Debbie Conway did. She witnessed the collision that killed her mother instantly.

Unable to stop the vision of that accident replaying, Debbie creates a Dream World, a safe place where Joshua Lawson lives. She knew he was not real, knew he only existed on the poster on her wall, but he was there for her when she needed him.

Her best friend, Wendy, is there for her, but only Joshua seems to ease her pain.

Then Mark Hobson joins the school, an American boy, who confuses her love for Joshua. Her former best friend Karen does anything she can to cause Debbie pain, including pursuing Mark.

Sarah Hitchcock was born in Norfolk, in a small town called Kings Lynn. She always was a keen reader, and one day decided to attempt to write her own, and never looked back. Today she has many novels in various stages of editing and re-writing and ideas for many new ones.

After finishing high school and then training to work with children, Sarah started her first job. She currently works as a pre-school teacher.

Sarah has four children, and three dogs, and a partner who has to put up with her rambling on about all her WIP's.

She recalls spending hours thinking about her characters and their storylines. To this day, she often falls asleep thinking about where she can take new and old characters.

I have been following Hitchcock for a while now and I have read this book when it was still in editing stages. It was a great read at that time and I feel with the edit this book has got a lot better. I get to see the difference of the USA and the UK, which is pretty cool to me. I love to learn things about other places. I loved the characters in this book, even Karen. You will know what I mean when you read this book. Debbie has been through a lot for a teenage girl and there is more to come. She don't know what to do sometimes and retreats to a dream world, which with the stuff she has dealt with. I would have to say I would rather live in my dream world. I can't wait for the second book, I have to see what happened with everyone.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a coming of age YA story that I really enjoyed.

Debbie is a wonderful character. She is a thirteen year old girl, who witnesses a terrible accident. Trying to cope with her grief, she slips into daydreams. I really liked this character and felt for her as she struggled to cope with the loss of her mother. She is pretty level headed, but just like all teenage girls, she fantasizes about Joshua Lawson, the star of a TV programme.

Karen is a character that I, at first, took a dislike to. She is snobbish and is a bit of a bully. However, as I read more about her home life, I began to understand why she acts the way she does. Her mother has some serious issues! I have warmed up to Karen's character somewhat, but still feel that she needs a wake up call to show her that she doesn't have to act that way.

Mark is an interesting character. He is an American, who goes to live with his grandparents in the UK whilst his parents (who are in a band) are on tour. I really liked this young man! He is charming and courteous, but has always felt like he was living in the shadow of his famous cousin. Being in England gives him a chance to stretch his own wings.

This book had me on a rollercoaster of emotions! I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book, but it was a shocking, heartwarming and unexpectedly charming read! The story is told from all three characters points of view, and gives the reader an insight into their lives. I must admit that I did find the teenage angst a bit teeth grinding at times, but looking back on my own teenage years, I can understand that molehills look like mountains to the youth. However, what got my goat was Karen's story. I cannot understand for the life of me how a family can be so shallow and callous to one of their own. Granted, I feel blessed to have a close knit and loving family, but the way they treated her really got my back up! Perhaps as the story unfolds in the next book, things will become clearer. I am looking forward to reading the next book to find out what happens next!
As this book is set in England, the author uses British words that are spelt differently to US English.

S.J. Hitchcock has written an intriguing tale that, although not as fast paced as I would have liked, kept me reading from the first page to the last.

I recommend this book to young readers in the 12 to 15 age range, and to adults who love to read younger YA books. - Lynn Worton

I was really excited to get this book and disappointed when I started reading.

To be fair, I'm not a fan of first person present tense. I have a really hard time getting into it. I wasn't able to get into this book at all, which is a shame as the story seemed like one I would really enjoy.

The story was okay. I just had a hard time connecting with the main character Debbie. She's in higschool, right? The way she daydreams which is a lot bothers me. I feel like she should be medicated or something. Why? She grew up in a loving home, with a loving best friend too. I think her childhood was pretty normal. So why the need to dream that much? I would have understand it had it only happened after her mom's accident. But base on the way Wendy talk to her, it was a natural occurrence even before that happened. So why? I get that all of us dreams or daydream to be exact but to the sense that you're getting lost even in the middle of classes just to escape reality... actually not just classes she seems to tend to escape to her dreams in the middle of just about anything. But why? it bothers me why. Thus, I can't connect with her.

Frankly speaking, even if Karen can be a real pain in the neck at times, I understood her more. In fact, seeing her home environment and everything she had to endure, I would have understood it better if she was the one who daydreams more. I wouldn't have been able to finish the book without her character. The reason why I kept going was because I wanted to get to know her more. And deep inside I was hoping that someone would come and do that for her. That's why I'm really looking forward to more of her and Craig. I don't know if the next book have that. I hope the next one will be about her. But seeing that Mark (the main guy) and Debbie hasn't progressed that much from this book, it might be just a hopeful dream for now.

it's probably because I'm partly obsessive and compulsive about school that's why it's hard for me to understand Debbie. I'm not sure if I can still stand reading about her daydreaming. Honestly, it's awkward. I want to skip the pages but I was afraid I might miss the reason behind if I do that. But if you take all the daydream parts of the book away, I'd say I enjoyed the rest of the book. The banters between Wendy and Debbie, Wendy and Simon, even the part of Karen being annoying to Mark made it exciting for me.

It takes you back to a simple world without the complication of technology, where your heart flutters when his name is mentioned. If you were a teen in the 80,s it is fabulous to be able to re live those days. It is very cleverly written as though it all really happened. I just cant wait to start the next book. I read it in 2 days as just couldn't stop. I needed to know what was going to happen next. I am sure each character relates to someone we could relate too in those days whether a close friend or not. I certainly would recommend this book to anyone wanting an easy read but that gives you excitement anticipating each and every chapter.

This young adult book is written from the point of view of three characters from very different backgrounds. It would appeal to girls aged 11-13, especially those who have suffered the loss of a parent. It is written with sensitivity, but the author is not afraid to deal with some hard-hitting subjects. It took me back to my teenage years I particularly liked how the author deals with the character of Karen, who is at first unlikeable, sulky and immature, but her loneliness soon becomes evident and the reader begins to feel empathy with her sterile home life. Well worth a read.

I loved this book and was hooked from the beginning. I really felt for Debbie who was having to deal with all the normal emotions of teenage life and then the tragedy that life had dealt her. I also liked the way that Debbie's enemy (Karen) was written showing her to be a bit of a nasty person but by the end of the book you were actually feeling sorry for her.

This is a great book for teenagers and may even make them think twice of why people react as they.
