Edwin Brook: Dire Recompense Paperback – February 28, 2017
Matthew is sworn to avenge a murder. His dedication to his wronged family is powerful enough to bring him through any trial, but youth and inexperience hold him back. Setting out to find new strength, he plummets into a web of tangled plots, tragedies, and a deep uncertainty surrounding his destiny. Matthew returns years later with wealth and power, ready to fulfill his vengeance. Assuming the mysterious guise of Edwin Brook, he begins his struggle for justice, but uncanny events keep thwarting his every move. In a twist of fate, he is forced to confront the shattering of everything he fights for, the testing of everything he has ever cherished, and a long-hidden truth that will threaten his life.
Edwin Brook is a tale of tragedy and hope, love and justice, highwaymen, daring rescues, historic treasure, and a stirring bittersweetness that wont be easily forgotten. It is an 18th-century action adventure novel with a classical bent, but an intensity that will appeal to modern readers. This tale promises to engage lovers of historical fiction, action and espionage, mysterious characters, and stories with a psychological aspect. Lovers of classical literature may also enjoy some of this books similarities in style to works such as Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities or Alexandre Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo.
If you are beginning to feel the call, dive into the book and experience it for yourself.

About the author

Daeus Lamb is a firm beliver that the real world is magical and that imagination is a beautiful reality. He likes swords and sunsets and paying attention to things other people miss. When he isn't hungry or philosophical or acting like some crazy court jester, he's probably writing or wishing he was writing.
He's married to Kate Lamb, a fellow writer, and enjoys it very much.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2017It's amazing, but this modern book feels like a 19th century-written classic. I love it!
It has the philosophical feel connoisseurs of classic literature love, but unlike some classics isn't hard to get through and is not so long as to take you months (which is a plus. ;) ). Some parts were a little slow going for me, but those are few and for the most part it's a real page-turner. The characters are fascinating even down to those with only a single appearance, though I do wish we could have gotten deeper into the more main characters' minds; known them more personally.
I found some things on the technical side of the writing repetitive or confusing at times, but besides that one of my favorite aspects about this was the style, with appropriate metaphors and thought-provoking philosophical material everywhere.
It did bug me a little how similar some facets of the story were to The Count of Monte Cristo.
But for the ending---have your tissues on hand. Then be ready to go in a corner and think deep thoughts for a while. It's so good.

It was one of the most WONDERFUL Stories with some actual depth, charm, character and interest to it.. Queenie was the best and who
could ever have played Dorcas so well... All of your characters were so perfectly cast..I will miss the ongoing series...

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017Edwin Brook is a tale full of plot twists, unique characters, and vivid settings. This book has a more classical feel to it, so it took me a while to warm up to the voice and at first I didn’t enjoy the prose style. What won me over though, was the witty narration. The way the author describes his characters and their surroundings is quite refreshing. As I mentioned previously the characters are unique and compelling, and in no way cliché, similar to characters you might find in books like Great Expectations. Though I didn’t feel as close to them as I would have in a book written from first or a limited third person, I fell for them all the same and wanted to read their stories to the end.
A few parts were hard to get through since I didn’t really see where the story was going. However during the last quarter of the book I was especially hooked, holding my breath in anticipation for what Edwin would do next. The ending was fantastic, beautiful, and unforeseen, completely worth a few difficult sections. The last thing I’d like to mention is that this book is not one to take lightly. It’s a rich and meaningful tale that deserves time to fully appreciate it. Overall it’s a unique and rich work in a classical style that you won’t regret reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2017Regrettably, I've never read any of the classics Edwin Brook has been already been compared to, but I did notice a difference in the way it was structured and written. It did feel very much like some of the classics I have read with a slower, deeper plot than what you find in most fiction today. I have to admit that I struggled with the slower pacing for the first third or so, but after I hit chapter 12, I was hooked! From lovable highway men to the thought-provoking Edwin himself, the characters were deep and memorable. The numerous plot twists were enthralling, and the ending was one of the most bittersweet I have ever read. Without giving anything away, I just want to mention that I was very satisfied with how it all turned out. Often times, I feel slightly cheated after I finish a book where everything ends perfectly. It simply isn't realistic. This book did no such thing. I want to thank Daeus Lamb for leading me on a remarkable journey, introducing me to wonderful characters, and then bringing it all to a close in a sincere and beautiful way that will not be easily forgotten.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2017Wow. I got this book for free in exchange for an honest review, so I wanted to say what I thought.
When I finished reading it, the first word that came to my mind was "reeling". I was in shock, both at the sudden twist of the ending and the fact that the story I had been wrapped up in was over. Set in a time of highwaymen, rapier duels, and mysterious potions, yet grounded on emotions and truths that span the ages, Edwin Brook: Dire Recompense is truly a book well worth reading. I was caught up in uncovering mysteries and watching Matthew attempt to exact revenge on those who had hurt him.
There were a few confusing scenes where it was hard to pin down the speaker from the loosely drifting characters (e.g. the tavern scene in Chapter 7). Some editing could still be done, as some of the language or narration seemed over-wordy or stressed.
However, the story itself was good -- solid to the core. A clever idea that emphasizes the need for forgiveness and selflessness. For me, one way I like to judge a book is not by its cover (although it has a cool cover!), but by how it affects me.Edwin Brook challenged my outlook and shook my ideas; it truly left me reeling. I would recommend it to anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars not really my thing, but a good enough book
Certainly not light reading, but a reasonably well executed book. I did find the different threads of story a bit hard to work out at times, but at the end they were all pulled together surprisingly neatly. Not really my type of book (I like Dickens, but prefer Martin Chuzzlewit to A Tale of Two Cities), but I can imagine it could suit others who prefer this style. Language good, no descriptive violence, but fairly dark overall.
