Editorial Reviews
Review
I was connected to all of the characters and pulled in by their individual struggles, as well as by the wonderful way all of their stories weave together to form a beautiful quilt of family, romance, love, acceptance, and growth into their best selves. -Megan Barnhard, Author of Recipe for Outlining
"This book tells a heartfelt story of a transgender boy and his mostly loving and supportive family. The story is one I could certainly relate to with my own childhood. I think this book is great for gender diversity advocates and parents who are seeking a better understanding of what it means to be a transgender person." -Shelley Roth, Springboard--Social Media and Gender Diversity Training
"It's not often a book makes me have ALL the feels... but this one did it. I cannot say enough good things about EJ's story, it's heartbreaking, heart-mending, affirming, and beautifully told." -Morigan Shaw, Author of The Idoramin Chronicles

About the author

When family losses left EJ asking the question, “What are you going to do with the rest of your life?” the answer was obvious and undeniable. Embracing her lifelong dream of being an author, she set out to write her first novel—a sweet romance.
But, she was soon jarred from her sweet fiction by the reality of prejudice and politics that threatened people she loved. Just as her calling to write had been undeniable, so was her next course of action. EJ changed her story—both her life, and her book.
In her debut novel, The Heart of the Matter, EJ Shelley invites you to share the challenges, the triumphs, the joy, and the anguish of a transgender child and of the family who holds him in their hearts.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2018This is a story of a little boy, and believe me, Sammy is all boy, who just happened to be born in a girls body. After the ultimate betrayal, Sammy and his mother are left in a position to go it alone. As you read about these people and the events that shaped their lives, you will gain a new understanding of the transgender community. This is a beautiful first book by the author and I can't wait to see what else she has in store for us all. EJ Shelley has a way of making us look at the world in a different way. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018The author takes us into a fictional family and allows us to see the struggles the family faces with Sammy, a transgender child. It makes you angry because there are people who face this turmoil and bullying in real life. In the end, the people who really matter are the ones surrounding Sammy. It’s so warm and touching that you almost forgot where they started, that he had any issues being exactly who he was meant to be. And isn’t that how it really should be?

I loved the character development and the interplay of the story lines. The author did a wonderful job showing how challenging it can be to be a trans kid,
for them and their family and yet how simply allowing each other our own humanity enriches and affirms all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening
This is a unique book.
It reads much like a sweet romance, but it's about a transgender child. Sometimes being Canadian I forget how hateful and intolerant many people are. This book was very eye-opening about the challenges a trans child faces both from their own body and from how they are treated by the world around them.

Really enjoyed reading this. Although it didn't go exactly as I thought it was going to, the characters were very likeable and realistic.
