4.0 out of 5 stars not bad...
Enjoyed the fact that the motivations of the bad guy were outside of the classical motives power and money.
Also nice to read about some of the contemporary problems of Africa, brought by the western world at their doorstep.
Good development in the main protagonist, all in all an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Success a second time
This the second novel in the Rubicon series featuring Marc Dare. THE EXILE picks up a year after the previous novel, THE NOMAD. In THE EXILE, Marc Dare has to chase an Ethiopian pirate Ramaas who has a vendetta against Western societies and a weapon he hopes will assert his dominance over all others. Abur Ramaas is by no means a mastermind villain-tactician but he is a vengeful Somali warlord, with a cause for which he'd let the world burn.
It is not necessary to have read the first novel prior to reading this one. THE EXILE can stand on its own feet compounded with thrills that will enthrall the reader’s attention. By the end of the novel, Marc Dare accepts a position with Rubicon’s special team . This team is not nationally affiliated but it is the tool of a billionaire who wishes to keep the world safe.
At the start of the novel, Marc Dare discovers a weapon so secret even his bosses at the United Nations Division of Nuclear Security do not believe him. He tries but cannot prevent its sale on the black market to Serbian terrorists. Marc strikes out on his own with little to no support and then the conflicts arise. With no other agency to turn to, he decides to ask the Rubicon Group for their assistance. He becomes an on-site consultant in the search for the nuclear weapon.
Exile is a riveting romp through the dark, gritty underworld of arms dealing and terrorism. With the enormous amounts of money exchanging hands, we are reminded that corruption, greed, and revenge occur and with no limits.
The high-paced action moves between Europe, Dubai, and the African coast. In Dubai, there is a high-speed car chase replete with pricey high-end powerful police vehicles. The car chase will make any man cry with its inevitable destruction of some of these unique multi-million dollar vehicles.
James Swallow does a great job at creating wonderful conflicts and keeping them credible and realistic. Marc Dare acquires the support of Lucy Keyes and shows us that even an honest rogue needs some personal support. Within all this excitement, the heroes and the reader have to stay focused on the end goal. To see how this is achieved, you have to read the novel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reasonably entertaining plot, mediocre writing
As in the first novel ‘Nomad’, this book features Mark Dane and Lucy Keyes as main characters, who are consistently saving the world from disastrous events like terrorist attacks and nuclear devastation. I initially found both novels reasonably entertaining, despite the unrealistic nature of some of the events, including the many miraculous escapes from gunfights and other life-threatening situations by the main characters. But since I noticed that the author tends to apply a rather limited and repetitive vocabulary, specifically when describing characters, scenes and decors (which becomes really annoying once you’ve noticed: “The mercenary”, “The gunman”, “The thug”, “The other man”, and in this particular novel: “The derelict rig”), it occurred to me that Swallow’s writing is actually quite mediocre. This will prevent me from picking up his next novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing sequel to Nomad
Pale repetitive shadow of Nomad, sadly, I was hoping for greater things. Technical details dumbed-down, no doubt to please those US readers whose mouths move as they read. Too much "nailbiting" action simply not fleshed out properly. Such a shame, but to be honest when were sequels ever better that the original, very, very rarely... Not a bad book, it makes a good read, but I feel disappointed after Nomad.
