Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Obesity accounts for about one third of cancers in the breast, colon, uterus, kidney and esophagus. Next to smoking, the most preventable cause of cancer is obesity.

This book is the result of research I carried out after having surgery to remove a cancer. I've read many books and reviewed countless studies to answer these two questions:
  1.  What are the causes of obesity
  2.   What is the best way to lose weight and keep it off for the long-term

From the Inside Flap

Did you know that 85 percent of diets fail in less than one year?

People around the world keep trying the same popular diets and expect to get different results even though there's an 85 percent chance they will fail.

Are you going to follow in their footsteps or do you want to succeed?

Are you tired of losing weight only to gain it back? Why not try a diet that REALLY WORKS!

“Rather than trying to lose weight by eating less, you will just eat differently.”

This is the key to this comprehensive, well-written book by Robert Lalonde. For years we have been bombarded with the mantra of avoiding fat at all costs only to have an ever-increasing population of overweight, unhealthy people eating low fat, sugar laden foods. The key is to remove sugar and reduce over processed foods. A healthy dose of exercise also helps. Lalonde’s plan is solid and similar to what I've used to shed over twenty pounds and keep it off for more than seven years. Less carbs, filling healthy low GI foods are key. I especially like the charts he uses illustrating the foods to focus on as well as the studies that back up his entire program. It does work!

A diet book that tells it as it is. The author did his research and present his information clearly in an educational way. You can be done with the book in one evening and be on your way to a leaner you. But the emphasize is really on long term health and not just some temporary weight loss diet. I like it that it is fuss-free with no complicated steps or special cooking involved. The author's main method is to use GI to guide your choice of foods. There are several useful GI charts included in the book which you can familiarize yourself with. Other than the first week of reset which might be a little challenging, I think the rest is doable and achievable if you've the right mindset. Definitely a more sustainable form of healthy eating as compared to faddish diets like Atkins or Paleo.

When I bought this book, I didn't know the diet plan was very similar to what I've used for years and still do.
I've lost many kilos, so I know it works. In fact, it's the only diet that works.
The book was easy to read and understand.
It's well researched and well written.
My only complaint is that the charts were too small to read on my Kindle Voyage.
    Highly recommended!

A comprehensive book with some simple principles.
I was reminded a little of Tim Ferris’s 4-hour body in the way this book goes in depth into certain areas.
This book also highlights the benefits of fewer carbohydrates but also focuses on the pitfalls of sugars.
I liked the way it simplified things down, such as anything ending in “ose” being a sugar.
Although the book uses science to present things in layman’s terms, my only criticism would be the long explanation of stevia’s benefits. Perhaps the writer could have dropped one of the studies.
I particularly liked the information on butter and fats in this book and am currently trying out the three-phase process in the book.

As I read through the ELH Diet, I was impressed with the amount of detail and description the author put into demonstrating how our bodies function with different types of foods. As a person who has successfully dieted, only to regain the weight plus ten pounds each time, I can see where I’ve gone wrong in the past. Most importantly, this book shows how to be successful with food choices, stay full, and navigate through the plateaus we have all experienced on our weight loss journeys. Even though I would have enjoyed some healthy recipes, this book has tons of other useful information to lead you to the lean you.

The contents of this book come from the author’s research into losing weight after the onset of a serious illness. He discovered that not all calories are equal and that different foods affect the body in different ways. He advises dieters, or anyone looking to improve their health, to cut out processed foods and sugar, cut back on the carbs and salt and get more exercise. This is standard advice that we should all know, but many of us don’t take the time to establish healthy eating practices and take a little exercise each day. He discusses the causes of inflammation in the gut which can lead to disease. A useful book for anyone who is investigating how to start, and maintain, a healthy approach to eating.

Definitely well-researched material. Would have given it 5 stars but the charts were too small to read in the e-book. I have looked at the Palo diet and even tried a few recipes. I found chewy rubbery bacon too much and I am not a big vegetable fan so I passed on the Palo diet. The data on sugar and diabetes hit home. I had forgotten that it also feeds cancer as the author mentioned. More importantly, is Rob explains how and why other diets fail. When a person knows what they are talking about and take the time to explain the why to you as he does it is worth the read and effort. Well done indeed.

If you watch a lot of TV and believe everything you see or hear, then this book is not for you. If you are looking for the TRUTH about what causes obesity, do not pass this up.
TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, many online places are supported by ADS from fast food restaurants, cereals, sugary soft drinks, and other processed foods. The common message about how to diet unfortunately reflects these sponsors.
That's not what this book is about, but this book will challenge what the mainstream seems to believe about how to eat and about what truly makes one obese. And it is backed up by very well researched facts. Knowing the right facts is a GIANT step towards fixing the problem.
Many work hard to LOSE weight, but they are doing the exact things that actually cause one to GAIN weight. If you are really serious about losing weight and getting your body healthy, you need to read this book. It will enable you to make the right choices based on the facts, rather than struggling to make those choices by the misleading information of those who are just trying to push certain food products on you. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I bought this hoping it will help me. After being unwell for 7-8 month and having become lethargic, I have gained some weight. I have started exercising again but knew I needed to also look at what I eat. I don't believe in the processed low-fat foods as I know they contain excess sugars and salts.
This book showed me the science behind food and how we used to eat generations ago, with little or no processed food compared to today. It was fascinating to read the crap they add to foods and what we should avoid. I have already cut down on many of the items listed as those we should not eat. It's a long road ahead but I hope to improve my thinking on what I eat.
I would have liked to see some recipes for lunches and main meals rather than a short list of 'eats these' and 'don't eat these' types of food. A list of 4 or 5 meals might have sufficed (it's easier to follow than saying 'eat vegetables').
