Monet Parker wasn't a sucker for a man in uniform. Even if he was a firefighter with dimples deep enough to swim in and ebony skin painted by the gods.

She was just trying to get her dream internship and prepare herself for a career in social robotics. She had no idea how her life would change with the simple push of a button.

When the elevator taking her to her interview at Real World Robotics stops, Monet isn't sure if she will live, let alone make her interview. She's rescued by Rhys Banks: the gorgeous hunk of a fireman. As much as their magnetism is palpable, Monet is trying to ignore her feelings. Focusing on her career and navigating her chaotic family drama is more than enough excitement for her. Still, it's hard to ignore #FiremanBae when her sister is hosting an Instagram Live video of the rescue and getting the whole internet buzzing.

What happens when the internet becomes a third wheel in Monet's love life? What happens when past hurts, career goals, and family baggage are in conflict with their desires? Will these distractions win out and quash the elevated inferno? Can Monet have it all, including love?

Carlotta Ardell is an engineer, professor, researcher, speaker, and author. However, her most important roles are being a Christian, mother to her daughter, Kennedy, and wife to her husband, William. She has many technical publications and a book on multidisciplinary robotics.

During the 2020 pandemic and summer of social justice, she was inspired to work with other Black Women engineering professors to become a fiction book author. Engineering has a marketing problem and there has been a longstanding need to amplify, normalize and promote Black Women in STEM as they navigate through their everyday lives. Out of this mission, Catalyst Chronicles and First Responder Fairytales was born.

It is her hope that through these African American fiction and Black Romance novels, people will see themselves and aspire to learn and do more to diversify STEM.

I Don't Like Science, But I Liked this Book
African American nonfiction is my preferred literary genre, and I'm more "arts" than "sciences." However, I thoroughly enjoyed this romance novel about a young woman whose ambition and drive collide with her heart's desires. The readers go along with Monet, the main character, as she navigates various relationships in her life, not just the romantic one. The author does an admirable job of making us care about the protagonist. Monet is that niece or cousin... the smart girl you remember from church or school, who you knew would always make it. Readers root for her as she tries to find that life balance so many women seek. One thing I found refreshing about this book is the romantic aspect minus the gratuitous sex. Yes, it is possible to have love and romance without intercourse, and the author adeptly handles it honestly and realistically. Elevated Inferno is a great, easy read and I recommend it.

When I first learned about this book as a result of perusing Ardell’s social media page, I was hesitant to read it due to the apparent ‘romantic’ lure that it seemed to be centered around (i.e., not my typical reading interest). I got a nod from the author, alluding to an almost—atypical, romance’ish story. With that, I journeyed into the abyss. While it was certainly still a romance book in my view, one of its deeper, central themes was that of inspiration; of tenacity in the face of stereotypes, biases and mindsets that serve to feed the status quo. That which has no expectation of Black women (in particular) drawn to, being immersed, or otherwise actively perusing STEM—specifically.

This was a very different topic and focal point of the story; one well-framed by the growth and realizations of the main character, Monet. The relationships felt believable and relatable (especially some of the sibling banter I’ve heard growing up). I found the interactions, dialog, as well as the conflicts very similar to what we hear or read in the real world so this all could have been something from ‘reality’ TV. In fact, it had a kind of Tyler Perry movie-feel about it, with a twist. One of the standout elements of the book is an unmistakable sense of Monet maturing into who she didn’t know she was even looking to become.

Admittedly, there were a few parts I skipped over due to content that didn’t gel with me, but aside from those, Elevated Inferno was easy reading. The audio book was very well done, easy on the ears regarding its attention-capturing quality, and was vocally well-paced and engaging.

Ardell—Engineer-turned Writer-turned STEM Marketer wrote the heck out of this story. As an added bonus, it was wonderful to see some of the real-world inspiration and origins for this story on Ardell’s social media and website(s). Bravo.

Monet Parker is a twin and a middle child. She’s stuck between a twin sister, Monique, who’s loved as her parents expected, and a younger sister, Mya, can do no wrong. This causes her to be insecure and unsure of herself. She doesn’t see her strengths or her beauty. Her career aspirations are her primary focus. While she’s in the elevator for the interview of a lifetime, it suddenly stops between floors. Monet is rescued by her image of a knight in shining armor, Rhys Banks.

Rhys has his own issues. His family may be more upwardly mobile, but they aren’t any happier with some of the choices he’s made for his future. His love for the career he’s chosen allows him to stay centered and focused. So much so, that he’s not prepared for the effect the curvaceous beauty he extracts from a broken elevator has on him.

This book was delightful. It celebrated African-American women in STEM while creating a storyline that was relatable. The author paints a beautiful picture of two people who love and respect one another’s choices and boundaries. My favorite part was the support they received from their families. Both characters had families who wanted the best for them. Their faith kept them anchored more than the expectations from their parents.

This was a wonderfully written book! It did a great job of representing brown women as it relates to the struggles of biological clocks ticking, the STEM field, having more degrees than dates, as well as family drama. I loved seeing brown women being shown in such a positive light.

    Now for the book...

Romance is truly not my thing but I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was. It was a beautiful love story that began with an elevator rescue. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved that the story had a happy ending for the two main characters! I am going to now check out the rest of Carlotta's catalog!

This book was so fun to read! I really enjoyed the story of the main character Monet. Although this was a fiction book, Monet was so relatable. There were 2 specific aspects of her life that resonated so much with me but I won't share it so I won't spoil it for others. Carlotta Ardell did a magnificent job writing a story that was entertaining, articulated real challenges that Black women in STEM face, captured the family dynamics of some families yet there was good comedy and a bit of suspense in this precious love story. I was almost sad that this book was coming to an end before vacation because I don't have anything like it available to read for my next trip. In fact, this book was such a page turner that always made sure to have it handy whenever I left the house. I'll be looking out for Carlotta Ardell's next book! Bravo to pioneering this new genre!

I can literally say this book couldn't have come at better time. I truly loved every bit of this story and found myself with a goofy smile as I was reading through. Just eager to pick it back up. I loved how it was easy to relate to the characters and engage in the story. I liked that you weren't afraid to throw the word of God in there as well, that made me extremely happy. I don't want to give anything away but let me just tell you, you will get hooked for sure!
