We were brought up to believe poetry was an elitist means to express emotions, and that rules and regulations applied. Do you recall having to gauge secret meanings behind the words the poet put on paper because if you did you were considered highly literate? Fortunately for some the realisation that poetry is so much more came into existence. Poetry in fact means freedom. We can put our own slant on what we read, we can identify and explore from our own perspectives and in doing so a recognition come to light – we are not alone in what we feel.
Poetry is about exploring our feelings, about discovering the world and the thoughts of others, and most of all it is about connecting with others whether by a single line, a verse, or a poem. Long, short, shaped, rhyming, sad, serious, disciplined or expansive, free verse, sonnet form or the more concise Japanese haiku, tanka and haibun, poetry grabs the heart and supports our existence.

About the Author

Barbara Strickland loves being an Australian with an Italian heritage. She thinks it lends an interesting slant to her life, especially her cooking. Her favourite things are travel and languages. Currently working on the second book in The Unexpected Series (a place where love of romance and travel co-exist) she is happy to be living in North Queensland tossing coins to help her decide between complaining about the weather or loving it. Having completed a third poetry book, she has been hard at work creating an anthology box set to house all three collections. It is now time to go back to work on the contemporary romance series, and hopefully a paranormal thriller. Barb has four ambitions, to publish her books, more travel (perhaps introduce her grandchildren to the Italian relatives), speak at least three other languages, and own a cat with blue eyes. The year 2020 may just accomplish those things. It remains to be seen but then the impossible has never stopped her before.

ABOUT Barbara:

Barbara Strickland is currently living in Townsville in Australia's tropical north. The change from Sydney has allowed the quieter time to concentrate on writing, a lifetime dream. Having a love for travel has inspired a romance series. Combine language, food and culture and you have stories everywhere and that’s exactly what Barbara decided to do. Gather those ingredients and turn them into a series with one small extra addition - some very steamy romance for all ages in her Unexpected Love Series.

She would definitely love to travel again at some stage but is currently happy working on her blog and reading when she can. Japanese poetry is a passion, and she has been published in a number of journals, as well as in her own poetry books.

At some stage she hopes to take up ballroom dancing again and learn a few more languages. Oh, getting a dog and cat when her home allows it, is definitely on the agenda.
