The Estate Series – fiction with an emotional punch from the million-copy bestselling author.

Somewhere to Hide (Book 1, The Estate)

Cath Mason has learned to be tough. The things she’s seen growing up on the Mitchell Estate, she’s had to be. Yet, even broken and beaten by life at times, she’s still the first person a woman in need of help seeks out. At Cath’s house, there is safety in numbers as well as a place to hide. No matter what trouble comes to her door, she won’t turn anyone away – because she knows what it’s like to live with secrets and lies.

But now a problem from her past has come back to haunt her, and she’s the one faced with a dilemma. What should she do first – help or be helped – despite being unsure she’ll ever be ready to confront her own demons? Or, with danger around every corner, has the potential for revenge already gone too far?

Behind a Closed Door (Book 2, The Estate)

Working on the notorious Mitchell Estate, housing officer, Josie Mellor, faces challenges every day, but not nearly as many as those of her tenants. Kelly Winterton is scared and alone after her partner has been jailed. Charlotte Hatfield has fled from her violent partner four times already. He’ll probably kill her if he finds her this time. Disowned by her family, someone is taking advantage of Amy Cartwright’s vulnerability.

But Josie has her own problems to deal with too. As her home life deteriorates and she struggles to escape her controlling husband, she realises only a thin line separates her from the people she’s trying to help.

Fighting for Survival (Book 3, The Estate)

When Caren Williams finds herself back on the estate she fought so hard to get away from, little does she realise she'll be living opposite her arch-enemy, Gina Bradley. Gina Bradley thinks she and her family rule Stanley Avenue so when Caren starts to become popular, she decides to hit her where it will hurt the most – she wants her husband.

Twins Rachel and Claire Bradley, took control of their girl gang when their leader was sent to a juvenile detention centre for assault. But Stacey Hunter is out now and wants to hold the position of top dog. Brawling in the street, fighting on the square and conforming to peer pressure – it all comes down to holding your nerve. But this time not everyone will survive the notorious Stanley Avenue...

Q&A with Mel Sherratt

How do The Estate Series and The DS Allie Shenton Trilogy differ?
DS Allie Shenton novels are police procedurals, so they are fast-paced and thrilling, with a murder to solve in each book, so plenty to keep readers thinking and working out. The Estate Series are a lot more relaxed - colourful characters and gritty subject matter, covering many social issues.

What genre does the series fit into?
I’d like readers to go through emotional journeys with the characters. I like to write about hidden crimes - things that often happen behind closed doors. The storylines are gritty but most have happy endings, laced with hope and encouragement. So I’m going to go with my own genre of Grit-Lit – where drama meets crime.

Where is The Estate set?
I’ve based the series in the fictional city of Stockleigh but it's anywhere you’ll find dysfunctional families such as the Gallagher’s (Shameless). It’s anywhere the teachers try their best to educate the kids in schools similar to Waterloo Road. It’s not far from Happy Valley. At times it’s as sad as Eastenders: more often it’s reminiscent of an episode from The Jeremy Kyle Show.

***Available now - FAMILY MATTERS, book seven of the Detective Allie Shenton Series.***

***Also available now - a box set of the first six Detective Allie Shenton Series.***

There are seven books so far in the DETECTIVE ALLIE SHENTON SERIES. These are part police procedural/part crime thriller.

There are two books with Eden Berrisford as the main character, THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR and DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU.

There are four books in THE ESTATE SERIES - a mix of psychological suspense and family life with a sprinkling of grit and a dash of menace - where drama meets crime.

I have five standalone novels. THE LIFE SHE WANTS, TEN DAYS, THE LIES YOU TELL, MISSING GIRLS, and WATCHING OVER YOU. They are dark in places, light in places, and disturbing in places.

I have also written four books featuring DS Grace Allendale, HUSH HUSH being the first one, TICK TOCK the second, LIAR LIAR the third and the final one to finish the series, GOOD GIRL.

I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with my husband and make liberal use of my hometown as a backdrop for most of my books.

I enjoyed all three of these books with their genuine characters and solid plot lines. I find these books to mostly be stories about issues important to women, although others tend to think this author writes crime fiction. So,read and decide for yourself

Addictive Reading. Mel weaves everyday issues & the taboo issues into the tapestry of life on struggle street. The key characters add a familiarity that is comfortable. Could be the next Coronation Street as a TV series.

Nice series that follows the life of somewhat ordinary people. Puts a good spotlight on spousal abuse. Particular emphasis on how to get out of the cycles. Characters are 3 dimensional and I like them. Pleasant reading.

Well-written books set in the slums of some British city (not named), with a lot of colloquialisms used. The characters were mostly what we American southerners would call "white trash," and their lives were for the most part pretty miserable. These books were recommended to me by someone who knows I like Maeve Binchy's Ireland-set books, but they are nothing like hers. Truthfully, they were downers with sort-of happy endings tacked on after mountains of misery. I prefer stories that are not so dark.

Just not my type of book, did not even finish reading the first one because I was bored. I thought because t was set in Northern England it would make a change from the usual American detective novels but just did not o it for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good if you like this sort of thing

The Mitchell Estate is a housing project where the poor, the unemployed, the underdogs of society live with little hope of ever rising beyond their current living conditions. Crime is high, yet there are some decent, caring folk who will always help neighbors in need. One of those is Cath Mason, the prominent figure of the first book, who repeatedly opens her flat to people who have nowhere else to go. At first, she mainly serves as pivot for other people's stories (a beaten wife, an abused daughter, a drug addict), later, her own past catches up with her.

The book is well written, the characters are believable and sufficiently defined, and their stories seem realistic. Given the topic, that makes for a rather depressive mood. At least for me, that was the overall effect, in spite of the kindness of several characters and the happy ending to most of the storylines. Too bleak for my taste, so I stopped reading after the first book. However, that's a matter of personal preference. Such as it is, I think it's pretty well done, and if you find this kind of story appealing, by all means get it.

True grit read. Characters believable and good story lines. Wished there were more in the set. Enjoyed all three books. The Jose Miller series describes her work as a housing officer, and the lives of the people she has to deal with, bringing to life the various characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel on the gritty side of life well worth reading
Reviewed in Australia on April 28, 2015
These are three well written interconnected novelettes describing life on an estate for people on welfare. The setting of a council estate with two separate halves with the good part and bad part is made real by the author even though my only experience with this setting is through TV series. Mel does a good job with the characters and has interesting story lines with twists that are well hidden. The novels revolve round hope and giving people a go (but not always). Not everything goes to plan and as you read it isn't a matter of what but when. This does not detract from the story which after all is about the grittier side of life where real people do come to bad ends. Mel provides a excellent follow up to all events. The scene at the funeral is so well done and properly understated.

Mel does not fall into the trap of trying to make you sorry for the people in their dire straights. Some characters are unlovely and this is not glossed over nor exaggerated. Mel is presenting "this is life as it is".

Overall I enjoyed these books and was a little disappointed when I finished each section of the set. I'm glad that Mel concentrated on the story and didn't include annoying and irrelevant detail to get a novel length.
Will keep my eye out for more of Mel.

This book series was a real treat to read. I love how they develop characters but they use different characters for each of these books.

Book 1 was about Cath and it was an amazing book that I truly found to be amazing story of revenge.
Book 2 was about Josie which was an interesting book but didn't have the same draw for me as the first one.
Book 3 was very different as it focused on a gang of girls which had Claire and Rachel as well as dealt with the mother and her rival who just moves back to the Estate.

It is a 5* series which shows huge character growth. Love how this author can tell a story

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard gritty look at life on a council Estate

Thoroughly enjoyed these books. Loved the setting as I could fully relate to the Estate and all the people that lived there. The author brought to life the characters, whether they were on the good side or the bad. Unfortunately there are people out in the real world that sponge off the state, thinking they have a right to do so, but also there are others that work hard but just don't get the breaks they deserve. The people like Josie in the book are amazing and always try to help everyone even those that don't want it.
Looking forward to the next instalment
