BOOKS 1-4 IN THE USA TODAY BESTSELLING EVAN BUCKLEY SERIES

The Evan Buckley Thrillers from USA Today bestselling author James Harper are fast-paced crime fiction stories featuring maverick PI Evan Buckley and his reluctant partner in crime, Detective Kate Guillory.

For readers who enjoy gritty, fast-paced crime thrillers, including those by Robert Crais, Robert B. Parker, Harlan Coben, John Sandford, Robert Galbraith and others.

BAD TO THE BONES

Evan Buckley’s wife Sarah went to work one day and didn’t come home. He’s never stopped looking for her. Haunted by his memories, driven by his relentless quest for the truth, he loses himself in other people's problems. Lucky for him his latest client, the reclusive Linda Clayton, has got more than enough to keep him busy.

Not so lucky for her. When her son Daniel disappeared ten years ago, she didn’t think her life could get any worse—until her husband ran away, that is. Makes you thankful you're not Linda Clayton.

After Evan’s last case ended in disaster, he’s at the end of his tether, his self-esteem at a dangerously low ebb—until fate throws him headlong into Linda Clayton's wretched world and a long-dead investigation that everybody wants to stay that way.

Except Evan never learned to do what everybody wants, and he vows to find answers for her that he can’t find for himself. As the suspense ratchets up, he’s caught in a desperate fight for his life with a stone-cold killer who will stop at nothing to protect his secrets.

KENTUCKY VICE

When high-flying hedge fund manager Jesse Springer shows PI Evan Buckley a wad of explicit photographs that arrived in the mail, Evan gets caught up in the most bizarre blackmail scam he’s ever seen—because Jesse swears on his life he doesn’t remember a thing. But can Evan trust him?

Desperate to escape the memories of his lost wife that haunt him, he heads down to the endless grass and millionaire stud farms surrounding Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby. There, he finds it’s not all Southern charm and mint juleps and he’s soon caught up in a lethal game of double-crossing, pain and bloodshed as he goes up against the ruthless gang behind the scam.

And if things weren't bad enough, a psychopathic killer from his past launches a crusade of psychological revenge and twisted mind games that threaten to plunge Evan back into his darkest days.

Adrift in a sea of betrayal and lies as the body count climbs, Evan is forced into an impossible dilemma. Who to believe? Because one thing’s for sure—any wrong step will be his last.

SINS OF THE FATHER

Fifty years ago, pharmaceuticals magnate Frank Hanna got a girl pregnant. Then she disappeared. Now he's dying with nobody to inherit his fortune - apart from his weak-willed daughter and her bullying lover, a gambler in over his head with the Russian mob, willing to do anything to save his own skin. Desperate to atone for his sins, Hanna hires maverick PI Evan Buckley to investigate, to find answers to the questions that haunt him. Did she have the baby? And if so, what happened to it?

As Evan searches for somebody who might never have existed, peeling back fifty years of lies and betrayal to uncover the tragic story hidden underneath, he faces a terrible dilemma: the closer he gets to the truth, the more he puts his quarry in danger, his tenacity turned against him as he becomes an unwilling pawn leading the ruthless mobsters to the one person who stands between them and Hanna's fortune.

To make matters worse, Evan’s own troubled past is back to bite him with a vengeance as his nemesis, Carl Hendricks, feeds his festering hatred from his prison cell, sending a killer intent on Old Testament-style retribution after Evan and his family.

Evan's wife disappeared five years ago. He gave up his newspaper job and became a low level detective, so he could search for her. No luck in that department though.
The author, James Harper, takes us on different adventures, while taking us on different stories. With the help of a police detective, he takes his character, Evan Buckley, up many grades, to become a good PI. If you like detective adventures, with just a little romance, no hard core sex, then these stories are for you.

Harper's first three books would best be described as achingly slow-paced in terms of the plot build-up with tremendously satisfying endings. The fourth book was more fast-paced but no less satisfying for me.

I first read Bad To The Bone and provided a specific review once I completed it. I found it so entertaining, I decided to buy this boxset. I was not disappointed.

Kentucky Vice takes place in an entirely different town and explores a far different but no less entertaining plotline from Bad To The Bones. While the book remains centered around Evan's activities as a private investigator, the introduction of a number of new characters enriched the story and made the book just as enjoyable, if not more so, than the first in the Evan Buckley series.

Sins Of The Father was an entertaining follow-up to Kentucky Vice. The book was focused on a brand new plotline but included elements of the stories from the previous two books, all of which were intertwined masterfully by the author. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery tinged in humor which has characterized the Evan Buckley series from the beginning.

No Rest For The Wicked could best be described as a quick, but by no means cheap, thrill. It is the shortest of the first four Evan Buckley thrillers, resulting in a faster but equally enjoyable build-up with respect to the plotline. I once again found the mix of characters from the previous three stories and the introduction of new ones seamless and the resulting story entertaining.

I will, without a doubt, continue to work my way slowly through what has become one of my favorite book series.

James Harper, has a captivating thriller . The Evan Buckley character is intriguing and not in a romantic way. At times I can't make my mind up if I like him or is he like a used coffee mug given to someone else to be drunk from. However, his character is addictive and you are plagued to read more.Worthy read.

I love the murder mystery/thriller genre. Unfortunately, I'm such a voracious reader that I had at one point read every book issued by my favorite authors. Maddening! Browsing booksellers, both bricks and motar and online, as well as pouring over book reviews led me to some great books and authors, but I was wanting a new series to keep me entertained for the long term. Thank goodness I discovered James Harper's Evan Buckley series! I immediately became enthralled with the engaging characters, captivating storylines and unusual crimes, never mind the sly/dry humor - A perfect mix for me!

Every time I pick up a book in this series, I quickly free fall into Evan Buckley's world of mayhem with great anticipation. The mystery surrounding Evan's missing wife carries through each of the books in this set and the reader becomes as driven as Evan to find out "What happened?" to her. As part of this ongoing quest, he has regular run-ins with deeply disturbing nemeses, while also managing to forge uncertain alliances with shadowy figures and juggling interactions with some truly odd ducks. The continuing twists and turns in Evan's journey of hope, along with the occasional insertion of much appreciated humor and funny asides, adds much needed relief from the tension that inevitably builds to a crescendo from the unearthed pieces to the puzzle. Each book's conclusion leaves one with the thrill of an amazing ride, but also a rabid need to further follow along as Evan slogs through yet one quagmire after another on his path to discovering the ultimate truth about the reason his life was completely and unexpectantly turned upside down.

Evan Buckley is a private investigator. The cases that he takes on puts him in contact with some really strange people. He fights some. He loves some. And some seek revenge against him. There were some violent scenes in this book. But Evan and the good guys always come out on top.

This book was my least favorite of the series. While there was plenty of drama, I found much of the story entirely predictable. Probably the most positive comment I have is that Harper did a fairly good job of fleshing out some of the characters in the story that were either new or introduced in the previous book in the series.

NO REST FOR THE WICKED by James Harper.
Hotel with invite for just two couples. As a police detective, you would think he’d question, with Gina his girlfriend. Evan out walking, while she goes into kitchen for breakfast. Meeting with a shotgun, she reacted, had the upper hand , when memories of just having been abducted took over. Hair raising plot, what will go on in that kitchen, with Gina and Emily, readers won’t want to miss. James has done a tense action filled story, that keeps you to the end. Good box set don’t miss it. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Good value of the four books in one and I have continued to buy the rest of the series as I read them.

Ok, so at times it is a little implausible, but if you are a crime fiction fan looking for an enjoyable easy read with likeable characters, you should enjoy it.
