Everybody Shrugged Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

If you’ve encountered Walt Pilcher before, you’ll know to buckle up for a hair-raising ride. Everybody Shrugged is Walt’s first novel with Fantastic Books Publishing.

Hold tight to your car, French fries, beer, cigarettes, fluoride toothpaste, sexy underwear, bacon, butter, coffee, and anything else that tastes good, feels good, or is fun to do because here comes Congress to ban it. Professor Gardy Lavager leads the government’s campaign to outlaw popular products deemed harmful to your health, and the military is stripped of guns because war is hazardous too. But Major Tony Farina of the Army’s clandestine MADCOM force sets out to serve his own nefarious ends by subverting Lavager’s research in the name of national security while shadowy foreign interests prepare to leverage the imminent chaos.

The ensuing Harmful Substance Race spells the difference between peace and global bedlam as Gardy Lavager fears for his life from enemies at home and abroad.

About the Author

Walt Pilcher's parody radio commercials for Mother Murphy's Moldy Meatballs at age 11 foreshadowed a career in marketing from which he retired as a former CEO of several consumer goods companies, including L'eggs(R), the pantyhose in the plastic eggs (yes, really) and Kayser-Roth Corporation. He holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MBA from Stanford University, is a former Regent University board member and currently serves on the board of Global Awakening, an international evangelistic organization. Walt's writing CV includes the first issue of Galileo; The Worm Runner's Digest; the Fire & Chocolate poetry anthology of Writers' Group of the Triad; Fresh, Ancient Paths, and O Henry magazines; and the Fusion and Ours Sci-Fi and poetry anthologies from Fantastic Books. His business leadership book, The Five-fold Effect: Unlocking Power Leadership for Amazing Results in Your Organization (WestBow Press) was a First Horizon Award finalist in the 2015 Eric Hoffer Book competition.

Walt Pilcher and his wife, Carol, an artist, live in High Point, North Carolina, have three children and six grandchildren, and attend Grace Church in High Point. Walt holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MBA from Stanford University. Although a two-time victim of corporate downsizing long before it was cool (not unlike his protagonist, Mark Fairley), he eventually became president of two major apparel companies in the U.S. (including L’eggs Products – the pantyhose in plastic eggs) and one in Japan, although not all at the same time, and lived in Tokyo for 14 months during which two comedians were elected as governors of Japan’s biggest cities. We are not making this up.

Walt’s comedy writing career overlapped his business writing career, and it was often impossible to tell them apart. Published works include On Shallowed Ground, including Dr. Barker’s Scientific Metamorphical Prostate Health Formula® and other Stories, Poems, Comedy and Dark Matter from the Center of the Universe and the comedy novels Everybody Shrugged, The Accidental Spurrt®, and Killing O’Carolan (the latter two comprising The Mark Fairley Mystery series), all from Fantastic Books Publishing. His non-fiction book, The Five-fold Effect: Unlocking Power Leadership for Amazing Results in Your Organization (WestBow Press), was a First Horizon Award finalist in the 2015 Eric Hoffer Book Award competition.

All the way from Cao Dung, Vietnam to the U. S. White House "Shrugged" is a story of a dedicated scientist's efforts to save America and Americans from a myriad of harmful substances and the efforts of those who want him to knock it off. Be prepared to laugh. As one of the book's main characters, a gentleman if Chinese and Irish decent might say, "Dis book is a vely good lead."

Everybody Shrugged shows us a hilarious world that’s been turned inside out and upside down. Who wouldn’t want to live there? Me!! But it’s a fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Political Humour with Bite
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2018
Humour in any book is a gamble. We don’t all see with the same eyes. Whilst this novel rarely made me laugh out loud, I did smile and grin a lot, so it was a positive experience. That it managed this while dealing with such issues as government incompetence (this in a fictitious USA, rather than the ongoing real incompetence currently occurring there and in UK), narcissistic leadership, the corrupting power of leadership, and the proliferation of dangerous substances that have never been checked for safety, is testament to the author’s skill in writing.
The story moves at a good pace and covers a lot of ground. Often, as I read US novels, I’m confused by jargon. Here, apart from the obvious military acronyms, I was rarely lost.
The characters are wonderfully crafted. I loved the frustrated and repressed Leticia and her forlorn would-be lover, George. Dr Lavager, the criminally insane scientist on a mission to ban everything in the cause of his own glorification, is a warning to all academics who care more for their careers than for humanity. The sad figure of Wong Lee, a man of mixed Irish and Chinese descent, could hardly be other than he is, given his speech problems and upbringing. And the dreadful, arrogant, vain and deluded Tony Farina is a scream. I enjoyed the fact that he was far more worried about the potential use of foul language from his soldiers, substituting ‘nuts’ for all known expletives, than he was about the potential deaths of millions on the success of his mad scheme.
There’s a lot going on in this story. It sheds a darkly humorous light over the machinations of both politics and the military mind. Relationships are amusing and varied, with some romance among the many other groupings. The incompetence of the many secret agencies at work in the world is highlighted with great humour, too.
I enjoyed this book. It’s a great read; a funny book with an underlying serious message or two.

As the author of this fine book, I can assure you with absolute certainty (and objectivity) that you will love it. It is hilarious beyond words, but with a serious undertone, and you will have a hard time putting it down until you've finished it. And probably even then. It's a fun book. Get it!
