To Experiment with Desire (Girls Who Dare Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 941 ratings

Girls who dare – Inside every wallflower is the beating heart of a lioness, a passionate individual willing to risk all for their dream, if only they can find the courage to begin. When these overlooked girls make a pact to change their lives, anything can happen.
Twelve girls – Twelve dares in a hat. Who will dare to risk it all?

To Experiment with Desire

An attraction she cannot ignore…
Minerva Butler is tired of her mother’s ambition to see her wed a duke like her clever cousin Prue. Beautiful, blonde, and with a healthy dowry thanks to her cousin’s generosity, it appears Minerva can finally take her pick of the ton’s eligible gentlemen. So naturally, this is the moment she becomes infatuated with the brilliant and impoverished natural philosopher, Inigo de Beauvoir.

A woman who threatens his peace of mind…
Inigo de Beauvoir is a driven man, consumed by his work to the detriment of all else, even his health, until a beautiful society Miss begins a seductive war against his belief that love is nothing more than lust with a ring on its finger.

A dangerous liaison…
On the surface, Miss Butler is the one with everything to lose, yet Inigo soon comes to realise that experimenting with desire will pose a very real threat to his heart.

**** Warning: This book contains a careful selection of quiet determination, resolute tight-lipped-ness and (almost) insurmountable levels of tension. Although coupled with the presence of occasionally descriptive sexual encounters, we are very pleased to highlight that this book - and series - is in no way verging on erotica.

I have loved every single one of the stories in this series! I’ve skipped around on the series but when I saw the author pairing Inigo and Minerva in Harriet’s story I had to see how their story will play out and it was wonderful! I love these stories so much, the author does an exceptional job of building out these characters and creating compelling stories that are hard to put down. Love them all but especially this story - it was *chef’s kiss*

I am not a big fan of Minerva although her character has clearly grown and improved. It took me some time to warm up to Inigo. The story was interesting and did keep me interested. A warning about the overall series...if you don't read them in order the "filler" subplots may be distracting to the overall main story.

When a very stubborn Miss is determined to prove an equally headstrong man he is wrong ...

This series is just getting better and better, each new book contributes further to the global plot.
I wants to know what will come after.
I am even coming to like Montagu.

If In the beginning of the series, Minerva was not presented under the best light, she quickly found her place in my heart. From her very first encounter with Inigo, I fell for her witty correspondence and her detached appearance about her lack of instruction and silliness.
How she changed during the course of the series, now she takes matter in hands instead of letting her mother decide for her future.
And Inigo, for someone so clever, he is very smug and quite blind, or more I would say, eager to lie to himself instead of recognizing Minerva’s weight on his nerves and heart.
He was unable to point out the many new feelings she awakened, determined to recognize only a physical answer for each new emotion she stirs, even when she haunts his dreams and disturbs his working moments.
It was a delight to see he fall and drown. With his obdurate trait, he is so certain of the fibs he tells himself.
Yet, never I was angry at him, not even upset. He had such an upbringing, it is normal he can’t recognize something he never saw nor experienced. And as a man of science, he needs proofs to ascertain things exist. He just didn’t see he became the feedstock of a test, Minerva’s experiment.

Mrs Emma V Leech has me on edge, will Jemima be able to save herself, will Helena fall prey of a blackguard, and what of Matilda and Montagu ...
Even if I am eager to see what awaits every remaining girl, I afraid I will have to say also goodbye to them. They became in some ways friends, each very peculiar and lovable.
So I can’t give less than 5 stars for this witty and moving tale of teaching and learning about love.

As with all the Girls Who Dare books, the story of Inigo and Minerva was a wonderful addition to the series. Minerva was a breath of fresh air, guileless in her love for him, and a joyful spirit. The author did a believable job of bringing Inigo from a single-minded scientist to a man obsessed with a woman. It was a fun read, and I enjoyed the stories that were thrown in about the other Girls Who Dare.

As so many of us are looking forward to it, I can't wait to read Matilda and Montagu's story. Few heroes I have anticipated as much as I am looking forward to hearing about him. My hope is his personality doesn't change when it gets to be their story - he's been so dreamy until now, and I look forward to finding out how he will solve his dilemma.

Minerva is unprepared for an encounter with man who's name is familiar to her. Inigo is known as one of the most brilliant scientists of his day and just happens upon an accident in the making as Minerva knocks a book from another gentleman's hands in a bookstore. Stepping in to take the blame, Inigo becomes Minerva's hero, one she can not forget. Bold enough to ask for a chance to hear his next lecture, from which ladies are banned, Minerva sets her heart on capturing the elusive Mr. de Beauvoir!
A strong willed woman run amuck! Such a fun book, another in this wonderful series. Congratulations, Ms. Leech. We continue to look forward to more of your entertaining and heartfelt books.

I would have thought this one would have been more funny. Just by the way that the letters were written in the other book. And how she presented herself. I would’ve thought this was going to be a hilarious book. It wasn’t bad, still entertaining. And they got their happily ever after.

I couldn’t get passed the fact that Minerva could fall for someone as unfeeling as Inigo. Their story to me was bit more on the lustful side. However as always this author makes you feel for the characters. The book requires some editing.

Another wonderful story in the series! When we first met Minerva in Prue’s story she was a little self centered. After Prue’s marriage Minerva started to grow up. When she met Harriett’s ex-fiancé she knew he was the man for her. Indigo was raised in an orphanage and dragged himself from poverty to be a respected scientist. But when Ms. Minerva kisses him his life will never be the same.
I loved the characters and bringing these two together made such a perfect read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Peculiar ladies for the win!
Reviewed in India on December 7, 2021
Love is more than just a chemical reaction. Minerva proves this by making even the sceptic scientist fall in love with her. With her relentless determination, Minerva is unfazed in her quest to win Inigo's heart despite being rebuffed multiple times and told quite directly and Scandalously by Inigo that all he will ever offer her is physical pleasure. Minerva risks her ruin and scandal just to be with the man she loves even though she knows that it won't last long. But fortunately, everything turns out to be well and the couple are beginning their happily married life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2020
In this world we rarely wait for anything anymore...it’s a fact of life! This world is one of spoilers, streaming tv and movies and instant gratification. I am as much a victim of this as everyone else. I discovered Emma V. Leech and specifically the ‘Girls who dare’ series about a month ago....I read one a day most days and had to slow down my reading in order to coincide with the release of Ruth’s book (which I absolutely loved🤗🤗🤗) which I did except then I had to wait for Minerva’s. I really disliked Minerva and I could safely say that I detested her mother in Prue’s book. She grew on me in the subsequent books and I enjoyed the fact that she knew that Inigo would not fall at her feet like other men. She wanted him even though there were much easier pickings for a girl of her beauty. She trusted her instincts and worked to convince him. I loved her book and cannot wait for Jemima’s book next....then Helenas’s and then Matilda’s....I’ll be planning a day off work to enjoy Matilda’s most definitely....

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very interested in Minerva, read it because of Mathilda (and Jemima)
Reviewed in the Netherlands on March 7, 2025
I have to admit that I didn't really care much for the story of Minerva and Inigo. I never felt a connection with Minerva anyway, and although she made a lot of progress since the first story, she still did not capture my heart. I honestly found her to be acting like an elephant in a china shop at times with regard to Inigo. Moreover, I actually found the two a bit of a strange combination and felt it had more to do with physical attraction on Inigo's part, than a deep emotional connection.
The reason why I read this story in the first place, was solely to not have to miss any of Mathilda's story. The story of Jemima and Solo also intrigues me.
