About the author

Christina McMullen is a science fiction and fantasy author who just can't seem to keep humor from sneaking into everything she writes. When she's not writing (which is most of the time these days), she's either getting her butt kicked in Mario Kart or catering to the whims of a very small and very grouchy dog.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2017This trilogy involves Lucy who is now alone in the world. Her mother died years earlier and she never knew who her father was. Lucy was then raised by her politician Grandmother who had little time for her. Once her Grandmother dies, Lucy decides to quit college, where she was studying law to appease her late grandmother, and venture to New Orleans to try to locate her unknown father. With little to go on, Lucy takes a job at a seamstress/costume shop and rents an apartment upstairs of it. She meets an attractive man at the coffee shop one day and accepts a date proposal. That’s when things get really strange for Lucy. Her date is a vampire but when he attempts to drain the blood from Lucy, he quickly dies instead. Lucy learns that she has an enzyme in her blood that is fatal to vampires. She learns that many vampire hunters have this enzyme in their blood but at a much lower level. Her blood makeup seems to be an anomaly which we learn more and more about as the story progresses.
There were many twists and turns in this series and they kept my interest. Just when one mystery is solved more take its place. The characters are very well-drawn and the story is fast-paced and action packed. Unique vampires that are created through genetic cloning and enhancements. Highly Recommended
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2017I read the series as well as the prequel, and I enjoyed all of it, especially the pairing of sci-fi and paranormal. The nifty science was a treat that I would like to see more often. I hope McMullen will revisit this series one day because I have grown fond of the world within our own that she has created.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2016This series really surprised me with its depth and complexity-in a great way! Reminiscent of Suzanne Brockman's military paranormals, this series creates a believable world where vampires try to engineer their reality and ultimately their immortality. This was one of those books that I thought about all day and couldnt wait till nighttime to get back to the story. Highly recommended!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2016Especially vampires that live in NewOrleans. There are no lestats here, but you will find hunters and genetically modified vamps that drink more coffee that anyone else.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2016For not really being into the vampire genre anymore, I wasn't completely sure I'd enjoy this series. I mean, I've seen enough sexy vampire garbage to last me a lifetime and I haven't read 99% of it. But I am completely devoted to Christina McMullen's writing so I couldn't not read them. I am so happy I did. These books take an over used mythos and spins it into something that's more original than anything else you'll read that's similar. The characters and engagin and well-written and the plot lines draw you in and keep you turning the pages.
All praise be to Christina McMullen and her delightful talent for wordery.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2017I'm not sure why but I just didn't connect with this story or the characters. Since the first novel was mostly training and world building, the next book may be better. The story was a bit dark with merciless torture. There was a touch of romance but not much. I decided to stop with book one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2016Read all three of these, the last two right when they came out. Cool characters and page turning action combined with some new twists on the vampire genre (genetically engineered super vampires) combine for total awesomeness. Much of the story is set in New Orleans.
