About the Author
Mel Sherratt has been a self-described "meddler of words" ever since she can remember. She lives in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with her husband and her terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer, with some help from her Twitter fans), and makes liberal use of her hometown as a backdrop for some of her writing.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just love Mel Sherratt as an author, and in particular I really like her "Ëstate" books (they seem to have finished? what a pity!). She gets right into the story and it is not always pleasant, but it is always real. If you read one Mel Sherratt book, you will be hooked on everything she writes - which is another thing. She is a serious writer - you never feel she is writing just because she has to follow up the last book. Each book is seriously crafted. My only regret is that I cant always afford her books, so I wait to see if/when the price decreases!

As people know I dont give away any spoilers. Not fair on the reader. This book was probably IF I had to choose was my favorite out of the 3. The characters, the description, the dialect. It is like a movie. You can see, feel, even smell. That takes talent. A must recommend. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Start with the number one. You wont be disappointed I can promise you that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fighting For Survival by Mel Sherratt
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is, I think Mel Sherratt's best book so far. I loved her debut `Taunting the Dead' and very much enjoyed the first 2 books in the `Estate' series. This third book in the series however hits new heights with a riveting and current plot with strong and believable characters and a shocking, yet ultimately uplifting ending. Mel seems to have really captured what it can be like living in a deprived area such as this--her previous career as a housing officer probably helping with this.
As you'd expect with such a book, some pretty emotive issues are touched on, ranging from teenage gang rivalries, severe depression as well as the difficulties faced by families having to move back to the estate after working so hard to leave it.
I found the depiction of Ruth's depression to be particularly moving with Sherratt handling her subject sensitively. The sections dealing with twins Rachel and Clair are particularly strong; with a gradual build-up of tension before a conclusion you feel is somehow inevitable given the situation they find themselves in. They know they've bitten off more than they can chew but they can't back down for fear of loss of face.
There is a lot of bad language and sex in this book, so for those easily offended, best to steer clear of this one! Very highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant in the end...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving thoroughly enjoyed books 1 & 2 from this series, I went straight into number 3. I found this one harder to get into, but purely only because I really disliked the main characters of this book. However, I stuck at it and by mid way through I started to really enjoy this book, the story lines and enjoyed reading as the characters and their parts in the story became clearer and I was hooked - again!!! Fantastically written series of books. I really can't wait for more. Definitely on my "recommend to friends" list.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth any of your time
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseToo bleak - I'm sure the author was trying to paint a real picture but she never succeeded not in painting the desperation or the occasional bright light. I'm sorry I persevered and read it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally believable
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe problem with most writers who base novels in 'sink' estates is that they try too hard to put every stereotype crammed into the most misery they can. You don't do this. Your three Mitchell Estate books are about people, real people who we can connect with. OK bad things happen to some of them. In this one the twins were an accident waiting to happen. But you also allow for redemptive passages even for your most hopeless cases. This lifts the text from the basic misery memoir to another level. Each book stands up on its own and it not propped up by having to know the information from previous ones. These are focused stories about real people who due to circumstances happen to live in one place. But you give them hope. You are a superb storyteller and I await further offerings to get me right clicking on my Kindle. I wish you would write more along the lines of Taunting The Dead as well. I loved all the local allusions in that as I know the area well. And yes the car park of The Wheel is the very place for a murder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another favourite author for my 'must buy' list.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI stumbled upon Mel's writing when I found Taunting the Dead which I totally devoured, finding the characters very rich yet totally real. So I thought I'd try the Estate book 1 'Somewhere to hide' even though it's not my usual read ( I usually go for the gritty crime thrillers), so I was unsure how I'd get on with this series about the different lives on an estate. I could not put it down however and had to buy books 2 & 3 before I'd even finished it. The characters Mel writes are so real, we all know a Gina and Caren, a Pete and a John & their daily struggles are the struggles of many of us. I am almost finished reading Fighting for Survival, which is my favourite so far, and I don't want it to end. Mel told me on Facebook this morning(I love an author who is in touch with their fans via social media), that book 4 is on its way but not till the summer & I can't wait!! It is keeping me up till all hours at night and I just want more!!
