FINAL BREATH A compelling murder-conspiracy thriller full of twists: The Jamie Carver Series Book Two (DCI Jamie Carver 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,793 ratings

"A brilliant follow-up to LAST GASP – loved it.”

A monstrous killer, safe behind bars – But how safe is, ‘safe’?
An archive of debauchery and murder, poised to ruin reputations, careers, lives.
A detective running out of time to find what he seeks

Eighteen months on from the case that nearly cost him his life, only DCI Jamie Carver knows the true extent of the Worshipper Killer’s network of depravity – and the storm that will hit when others learn of it. That network includes some who walk Whitehall's corridors of power, and maybe even within the Police Service itself. When former members of the killer’s network start dying, Carver senses someone out to make sure their past involvements remain hidden. Needing hard information, fast, but chained to a desk, his only recourse is the person he vowed to never, ever have contact with again – the extraordinary and dangerous dominatrix, Megan Crane.

The second in the DCI Jamie Carver Series, and Book Two of The Worshipper Trilogy, FINAL BREATH is a compelling story of intrigue, conspiracy in high places, and brutal, bloody murder. In it, Jamie Carver has to strip away layers of deception to unmask a killer - or killers - whose brutality knows no bounds. At the same time he must fight against those working to stop him uncovering the truth - all while having to negotiate the machinations of the woman whose shadow still haunts his dreams.

If you enjoy thrillers that are full of intrigue, and twists and turns that keep confounding your expectations, FINAL BREATH is the book for you. Buy it today and settle back for a read that will leave you begging for more - and the good news is, there is!. Perfect for fans of the likes of JD Kirk, Joy Ellis, Alex Smith, Rachel McLean, Angela Marsons, LJ Ross and J M Dalgleish.

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of Northwest UK's grittiest towns and cities. He writes stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they sometimes are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). During his service, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens.

As a former Senior Investigating Officer and Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his background, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as can be found anywhere in today's crime fiction.

He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, UK, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his crime novels.

Eighteen months after “solving” the Worshipper Case, Jamie Carver suffers from PTSD due to the trauma he personally endured in bringing the killer to what he thought was justice. Now people who played with the Worshipper, people from high places, are starting to die, and Carver knows when the full truth comes out, the personal and professional disaster will be felt in the highest levels of society and government. Maybe even some of Carver’s superior officers.

The book blurb describes this second book in the Worshipper Trilogy as “compelling story of intrigue, conspiracy, and brutal, bloody murder – one in which Jamie Carver finds himself up against people in high places, while forced to renew his acquaintance with the woman who, despite all his efforts, he cannot stop from haunting his dreams.” And that description is true.

This was another edge-of-my-seat read, sometimes hard to read because of the graphic nature of the crimes, but also hard to put down. The ending was a complete surprise, and left me breathless. I liked book 2 so much that I immediately (literally, while standing on the elliptical) bought book three so I could find out what happened. The stories always draw me in, but it’s the character development behind the stories that keeps me coming back for more.

These books are best read in order.

Oh, I was afraid that because the Worshipper series was labeled a “trilogy,” there would be no more Jamie Carver, but I saw that there was a book 4 in the series and I ordered that as well. Carver is a character I’ll want to follow for a long time.

Once again, as in the first book, I couldn't put it down and when I had to, couldn't wait to get back to it. Fabulous book, story, characters and can't wait for the final book.
I normally won't buy any book that is in a series, but glad I got this one. That said, each book is separate, but wants you knowing more.
Highly recommend and great job Mr Barker.

Just checked out the author’s website for free a link to The Carver Chronicles, the prequel to the Jamie Carver series. Last Gasp, the 1st in series is also a very good read and available for free, and should definitely be read before Final Breath, which I just finished and definitely enjoyed.
This series is about sexual deviants and graphic murders, so if you tend to be offended by such things perhaps move on. These novels are not “Literary Erotica,” but the crime scenes are very descriptive.

I am so hooked on this author and this series. I didn't want to stop reading at the end. However, when I reached the end I found out there is a 3rd book in the series and it will be coming out in 2018!

This story is regarding some twisted characters and their lifestyles and an interesting murder mystery.
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021
Hard to get involved in a book when most of the people getting murdered are sexual deviants. Who cares? If you live on the edge, don't be surprised if you're pushed over.

The story is intriguing and has so many twists and turns that kept me in total suspense. Great writer as Mr Barker can weave his tale so well to impart a scary tale with such clarity in the images as I read!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Case Continues
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2022
The 'Worshipper Murders' case is over, the perpetrator behind bars, yet there are long-term effects to be worked through by DCI Jamie Carver. His relationship with partner Rosanna has not been improved by what happened, and a secondment to a nine-to-five post seems the ideal way for him to free up some time to get the work-life balance right. The trouble is, it also gives him time to check through the wealth of files associated with the old case, which suggest to him that it's far from finished. And when a suspicious death occurs, and the deceased turns out to have been associated with the perpetrator and the shady world of strange sexual practices previously frequented by both, it looks like confirmation of Carver's fears.

It's time for Carver's previous professional partner Jess to don some interesting and definitely non-regulation gear, then head out with new partner Gavin Baguss to investigate the exclusive club 'Josephine's' and those who run it, Gerald and Barbara Hawthorn. There's another death, of another associate of this world, before the names of some in very high places begin to appear in connection with what's going on. Not to mention that the key which ought to have been thrown away when the 'Worshipper' perpetrator was banged-up seems to have been oiled ready for further use.

It's a murky world, of sleazy and sordid goings-on, with a bit of the blackmail which might be expected in such circumstances. Jess, Jamie and Gavin have to negotiate it somehow, together with cover-ups and suspected spies in their midst. Expect grisly murders and grey areas, with red herrings and whitewash for good measure.

As good a read as the first book, with a thickened plot. It could use a proofread, to eliminate the errors I found, and I think I detected an anomaly in the middle. That could be intentional though, as something to be resolved in the third book. It's still a five-star read, and I'll be on to the next installment sometime soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of Tension and Intrigue.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 22, 2018
A gripping follow-up to “Last Gasp” DCI Jamie Carver, now in a criminal intelligence role is called upon for his specialised experience to pursue the truth in the complex intrigue behind the death of a prominent lawyer. As similarities to the “Worshiper” case (featured in the previous book in the series) emerge he struggles to come to terms with those horrific events that still haunt him. He is reunited with his friend and former partner, Jess Greylake. She has the task of introducing her new partner acting DI Gavin Baggus to the shady world of the Dom-Sub community.
As suspicions fall on leading politicians and senior police officials. Carver, constrained by political influence, leaves the security of what amounted to a desk job to risk all he holds dear to thwart his old nemesis. Could it be that the enigmatic Megan Crane can extend her tentacles, even from behind bars, to bend so many people to her will. Further deaths follow thwarting their enquiries as the tension builds towards a climax that twists and turns. However, I will not spoil your enjoyment by revealing any more.
I will say that the author weaves an intriguing plot pulling you deeper and deeper into the world of dubious, if not exactly illegal, sexual practices and political intrigue. The observation of correct police operation procedure lends authenticity to the bizarre story that unfolds. Although this is a great stand alone read, I recommend that you read book one of the trilogy first, then like me you can wait with “Bated Breath” for the third.
