Fall of Man: The Manx Detective Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

DS Jim Walsh is an experienced and once brilliant detective who has a tendency to drink far too much. However, what he sees as an innocent habit that doesn’t harm anyone but himself and maybe his marriage, is about to cause him some serious problems.

Waking up with a pounding head and a mouth as dry as the Sahara after another night on the tiles is nothing new and nothing that a few tablets can’t fix.

The bigger problem is the dead girl lying in bed next to him.

In an instant Jim goes from being the lead detective to the only suspect in a brutal murder he has no recollection of, or motive for. Before long he is on the run, as he desperately works to uncover the truth about what really happened that night.

With a mysterious group emerging to frame him for the killing, his erstwhile colleagues hunt for Jim as he tries to keep one step ahead. And with his friend DC Kerry Hughes the only person who believes his story, the odds are stacked against him like never before.

Friendship and trust will be pushed to the limits, along with Jim’s ability to solve the case. But as he steadily closes in on an international criminal enterprise and the real killers emerge, how will Jim exact his revenge on those who sought to destroy his life?

In 2019, Paul published his first novel "Deadweight", a zombie apocalypse story, and released the follow-up, and concluding part, "The Last Bite" in 2020. "Thornhurst: A Deadweight Novella" is a standalone story from the Deadweight universe released in January 2021. A reader of many genres, Paul is currently working on his Manx Detective series. "Fall of Man" is the first in the series of gritty crime books set on the Isle of Man and currently available to read, with the follow-up currently in progress. A departure from the undead, the Isle of Man holds a special place in Paul's heart and he's excited to be working in a different genre, but in a very familiar location.

Paul is happily married, and lives with his wife, two beautiful daughters, a dog and a cat in the South East of England. When he's not writing, he can be found camping with his family, taking long walks at National Trust properties, drinking coffee or when he can, enjoying a nice gin and tonic.

Best crime fiction book I've read. Easy to read, you can't stop reading it. Great that the characters are easy to remember and it's not overloaded with them. If you've got an interest in the isle of man you must read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good storyline

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next story in this series. However I do have a couple of little niggles.

    1. Characters were described as "crossing their head" instead of "shaking their head". I know it's only a tiny point but it annoyed me immensely.

    2. I live in the Isle of Man (which is where this story is set) and we would NEVER refer to the UK as 'the mainland'. Never in a million years! Any Manxie reading this book will be cringeing every time they read that reference. Please get it right next time! 😋

Apart from the above points I found the storyline pretty engrossing and each chapter left me wondering how Jim was going to manage to get himself out of the pickle he was in. I hope the next book in the series will be out soon.
