The Fighting Tenth: The Tenth Submarine Flotilla and the Siege of Malta (Submarine Warfare in World War Two) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,400 ratings

An epic account of ‘the most concentrated submarine battle in history’.

Ideal for fans of Max Hastings’ Operation Pedestal and Jonathan Dimbleby’s The Battle of the Atlantic.

Between 1940 and 1944 the Tenth Submarine Flotilla fought a vicious campaign against German and Italian shipping that were supplying Rommel’s forces in North Africa.

From the small, beleaguered island of Malta, constantly under siege from Axis naval and air forces, the thirty-four submarines that served in the flotilla managed to sink over a million tons of Axis shipping, assisting to turn the tide of the war in the Mediterranean.

John Wingate served as first lieutenant in the Tenth Flotilla’s submarine
United during this period and records in fascinating detail the deeds of this unique underwater strike force. Surviving Commanding Officers, sailors, as well as British and Maltese civilians, all contributed to Wingate’s book to give brilliant insight into how this conflict developed and what it was like to fight within it.

‘an authoritative work and a firsthand account of most aspects of this tale.’
Naval War College Review

‘an acclaimed source amongst today’s submarining fraternity’
The Times

‘a history of remarkable achievements attained by sheer hard work, dedicated attention to duty, remarkable personal bravery and high standards of professionalism — unfortunately at a tragic cost in human life.’ Admiral of the Fleet, The Lord Fieldhouse

The Fighting Tenth: The Tenth Submarine Flotilla and the Siege of Malta is a tense and gripping story that uncovers the exploits of this often overlooked but vitally important naval conflict from World War Two.

I found the book very good. If wasn't 10 flotilla I believed Malta would have fallen very quickly. Great book

Thank you for this insightful look at a forgotten Battleground. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. US Navy Seabee retired. We owe a great debt to these sailors.

Up close and personal sacrifice by boys and young men turned over night into men, forced into the most dangerous job in the war. Literally saving the word from the evil Nazi juggernaut and save it they did. So many simply vanished under the sea never to be seen again.
Thank you seems so inadequate because it is. Remembrance is what we must do.

Americans see the sub war as U-boats in the Atlantic and gato class American subs sinking Japanese maru’s.

We forget the British subs in the Med. This book tells their amazing story. While most American crews did 6 or 7 patrols the British sometime did 25 or more.

We get all the books about the US Navy SubmarIne WWII stories, but this is the first British Navy story that I have read. Seems like the Brits are finally getting credit for all they did with inferior, old subs they operated with pure grit against the German, Italian & French enemies. I recommend this book highly.

This is an excellent history of British submarine warfare in the Mediterranean during the early years of WWII by submarines stationed at Malta. These boats played a key role in sinking Italian ships and German shipping seeking to resupply the German Army in North Africa. I suspect that readers of WWII history may not be familiar with British submarine warfare in the Mediterranean. This book will fill that void.

I would have liked more information on the type mines used in the Med and how they over come them with new sonar or equipment.

For anyone interested in naval history this is valuable reading. The author does a superb job of describing the successes of the Tenth flotilla , the difficulties it suffered under along with the brave people of Malta and using personal recollections and anecdotes to bring this history to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice book on a relatively unknown piece of history
Reviewed in Canada on July 22, 2022
I was aware of British submarine activity in the Mediterranean, but mostly of the exploits of Wanklyn in Upholder. This book sheds some light on the bigger picture of the Malta flotilla operations, with the attending idiosyncrasies of the need for a small footprint sub that could be used in the tricky waters of the Mediterranean, the struggle to base a sub force on a besieged island with practically no viable logistics and no sub pens, etc. The writing style is straightforward and makes for an easy read, while at the same time mixing reasonable doses of the human side of the stories into the already expected technical and historical information, all of it interspersed with sub action reports that I like the most. The immense importance and fame of the Battle of the Atlantic kind of overshadows what happened in the Med, where for a change the British were the attackers, and the Axis had its precious ships torpedoed. Overall, a nice pick if you are into WW2 naval operations history.

There are no maps or pictures in this book, which is a bit of a disappointment. That said, it is an excellent read that goes into the little known operations of allied submarines in the Med.
