Find, Fix and Strike!: The Fleet Air Arm at War, 1939-45 (World War Two at Sea) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 444 ratings

A full examination of the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm from the beginning of World War Two until final operations off Japan in August, 1945.

Perfect for lovers of naval and aviation history.

At the beginning of the Second World War the Royal Navy had only seven aircraft carriers and a couple of hundred obsolete aircraft. Six years later it had more than fifty aircraft carriers of various types and thousands of frontline aircraft.

John Winton provides a thorough record of Fleet Air Arm’s activities during the war, from the initial setbacks of the Norwegian campaign in the spring of 1940 to the long campaign against
Tirpitz in 1944 and finishing with the triumphant operations of the British Pacific Fleet as part of the US 3rd Fleet off the mainland of Japan in the summer of 1945.

Find, Fix and Strike! The Fleet Air Arm at War, 1939-45 charts how naval air power came to hold an increasingly important position in the Royal Navy through the course of the war. Uncovering the operations of British aircraft carriers and shore bases, catapult fighters from merchant ships, support given to the British army in North Africa, escort carrier and catapult-launched floatplane activities, as well as numerous instances of individual heroism has allowed Winton to demonstrate the true importance of Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm.

‘interesting, clear and accurate account … deserves attention by all naval history enthusiasts.’

Really good, really well written. Very entertaining the perfect blend of facts and story telling. The casualty was exceptionally high . I found it hard to believe that England used biplanes to such a large extant.

    Once upon a time

    The beaten rose up again

Because of not inspire of their losses

    Turning into the wind

    They launched their craft

Loading, fueling and arming with might

    While others fled

They sailed to find and engage their foes

Remember their hopes for the future

And honor their lives with your deeds

Thank you for the gift of knowledge and understanding

It was well organized and written

Highly readable introduction ad overview of the FAA. The book seem based on primary sources, some cited and other the seem very familiar. Missing is how the FAA grew out of the RAF. American officers served with the FAA. Was the constructive? Later development is skipped. There would seem to be a place for Eric Brown.

Some surprising information on the British involvement we don't hear of. It makes sense though. I'm surprised by the low technology at the beginning.

I have been a student of Military History for well over 50 years, and while I had an idea that the Royal Navy did see some action in the Far East, other than losing Prince of Wales and Repulse, I had never found the details of the actions in which they took part.
The Author has given us just the right mix of detail and overview to make the book interesting and factual, without being boring or shallow.
A very well put together piece of history that should be mandatory reading for all midshipmen.

The author does justice and honor to a less known theater of the war. Provides good details to the effort of the British Pacific Fleet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Excellent Book

I guess I am biased as my Dad was a participant taking the back seat in Albacores, Swordfish and Barracudas. I learnt quite a lot even about operations in which he participated but in particular about the late stages of the Pacific war when he had become a trainer. This is a well researched, compact and very readable book and my next job is to recommend it to others.

The book covers a vast geographical subject and time line in good order. It could easily be extended with a few personal remarks and a bit more in depth information on the gallant crews that endured so much to keep us safe.

The Fleet Air Arm achieved a a lot in Ww2. But it was an almost suicidal occupation. My grandfather wished me to join it. Not a place to be.
    Well written tribute.
