About the author

"The triumph of Everington’s first novel is that, while hinting at lofty literary precedents, it cumulatively takes on an unsettling voice all of its own." The Guardian
I'm a writer of horror and strange stories from Nottingham, England. I enjoy the unexplained, the psychological, and the ambiguous in my weird fiction, and this is the kind of story I try and write. My main influences are writers like Ramsey Campbell, Shirley Jackson, and Robert Aickman.
My latest collection of stories, 'Falling Over', is out now from Infinity Plus, as is the episodic novel 'The Quarantined City' which was recently reviewed in The Guardian.
My first book as editor, 'The Hyde Hotel' was released in 2016.
I drink Guinness, if anyone's offering.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2014Pretty good ghostly suspense tale having me thinking about graveyards given the subdivision was emptied out as result of the tanking economy and this passage "it was easy to imagine that the houses weren't halfway through being built at all, but halfway destroyed" was the perfect set-up for some washed out ghoul to traipse about the skeletal frameworks in the dark. Book left me curious enough that I downloaded another of the author's works to see if his material doesn't get creepier still. We'll see what 'horrors" the next book brings...
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2011I'm now a fan of Mr. Everington. This is the second story I've read from the author, and I must say, I'm hooked. A wonderful, truly scary tale! I will be downloading more of his work in the near future. Five stars. I suggest everyone read this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2012I enjoyed First Time Buyers as a first time reader of this author. It met all the criteria for a good creepy little story...mist rolling in, ghostly mysterious figures and a little psychological angst. It's definitely not your typical 'ghost' or 'haunting' story and I rather liked the twist. Just like any good mystery, you have to scratch beneath the surface for the really juicy, heart-pounding, neck hair-bristling good parts.
I see the 'good part' as the social commentary being made. Kat and Alex are struggling in the economy of today like so many of us. Huge debt and teensy weensy income. A mortgage you can't believe you sign on to and the risk of job loss around every corner. We all know someone going through this if we are not ourselves. At what point does it stop being about your own personal agonizing experience and you morph into the growing glob of the masses? Until you become a 'statistic?' What happens to those who are the 'statistics?' Do they become the sightless, voiceless 'almost people' on the fringe? Now if THAT doesn't scare you...
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2012This short story did absolutely nothing for me. There was nothing to love about either of the characters. I found them both to be very self absorbed and their relationship to be loveless. Neither of them had any trust or respect for the other. The only character in the story that had any sort of value was their dog. As for the "horror" in the story, it wasn't scary at all. The creature seemed like, what most would consider, an alien. It wasn't trying to attack or harm anything or anyone. It seemed to be simply looking for food and shelter. The story was perfect for a quick 10-15 minute read but was certainly not my cup of tea.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2019This book feels more like an unfinished short story. I am not very happy with it and feel I wasted my time.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2015Worst book I ever read. Definitely not my style and I am an avid reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2011Good start and kept my interest, but it being a short story... very short, it really ended quick. I would have liked to have read more just to see what happens.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2012I loved it! Interesting, creepy, scary, and well done! Not what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. Excellent!

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmm.
I feel like I must have missed something when I read this story. It started off so well and held my interest. I wasn't enamoured with the characters, I couldn't really make myself understand or like them. The ending just amazed me. I really just didn't get it....and there was nothing to give me a clue as to what the heck happened.
I wouldn't put anyone else off reading this. My take on this story is completely different to everyone else's if the five star reviews are anything to go by- and that is sometimes debatable. It was a freebie and there is no disputing that this is a very talented writer, the story just wasn't that great.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Expecting....
I downloaded this as a freebie and was glad I had as I wouldn't have wanted to pay for it. The story started out good but quickly went downhill and I didn't get the ending. It was very short and I read it in half an hour. The whole thing just felt rushed and it reflected in the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy but predictable read
A short story that passed as amusement during my lunch break. It's was "ok" and I'd read another of his. But I'm not going to become a follower
