Flirting with Fire: A Shore Thing Novel (Book Three) Kindle Edition
A stuntman with a love for fire.
A yoga teacher in search of zen.
A holiday season neither will forget.
Stunt performer and self-declared badass, Tate Astbury returns to his hometown to spend another dreaded Thanksgiving with his dad. But his father forgets and makes other plans, resigning Tate to a quiet and depressing holiday alone unless he can find someplace else to celebrate.
When Tate’s mischievous friend learns about the unfortunate twist, he dares Tate to enter a radio contest to become a fake boyfriend for a desperate caller’s holiday dinner, and Tate never turns down a dare.
Endre Michel is a mess. His yoga business is on the cusp of ruin, and his moms are visiting from out of state for the holiday, intent on meeting his boyfriend, a person Endre invented. Through the contest, he meets Tate, a crude, tattooed older man who plays the role of doting boyfriend so well, Endre suspects and hopes it’s not all for show.
Neither man can deny the unintended connection, and they struggle to overcome the distance between Tate’s put-together Hollywood career and the chaos surrounding Endre’s unsteady future—a situation that intensifies when an unthinkable tragedy uncovers a dark and painful truth.
Will Tate and Endre’s future together perish in flames, or can their love rise from the ashes? Click the BUY NOW button at the top to find out.
Flirting with Fire is a standalone holiday romance with several cups of angst, questionable jokes, a bird with a wicked sense of humor, a bed with loud, squeaky springs, and an HFN/HEA ending. - Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2020I am impressed and that is so very difficult to achieve these days. This book just blew me away. The raw emotion and graphic detail about dealing day to day with mental illness was beautifully written. It rang true and not glamoured up for added intensity. The relationship between Endre and Tate was a difficult one with Tate’s past dealings with mental illness and Endre’s continuing struggle but love won. This is the 3rd book in the series and each one is just as good as the last. I cannot wait to see where the author takes us next. This review is an honest and unbiased reflection of my thoughts after reading an advanced readers copy of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020Another “new to me” author, another “new to me” series and yes another case of me picking up the 3rd book to start with instead of the 1st. Some things never change 😉 The good news is that this book was touted as a stand alone and that’s pretty much the case. The only thing I was missing by not reading the first two books (Living on a Dare & Dancing with a Star) was getting to know Tate’s friends that were featured in those additions to the Shore Thing series. Which, by the way, I intend to rectify ASAP!
There is no reason in the world why a “blind date” between two men brought together by a radio station contest should have worked. It wasn’t meant to be a love match, but Endre was desperate. He had a great support system, but they hovered so making up a boyfriend to get his mom off his back seemed like a logical solution until it was time to meet him. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight, but there was definitely an undeniable attraction between Tate and Endre. An attraction that wasn’t hard to want to keep exploring even after the holiday obligations.
There was an interesting twist that I kind of saw coming, some great supporting characters – with the exception of a best friend who was a little too controlling – a couple of “broken” characters that deserved to find each other and a sweet romance. The perfect kind of holiday read.
I’m sure it won’t be long before I back track and get to know those great supporting characters just a little bit better. Stay tuned!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Flirting With Fire. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2020Wow! Has Grace Kilian Delaney’s writing flourished! The opening of 'Flirting with Fire' gripped me with its raw emotion and tore at my heart. With thoughts and images so vivid, this standalone story in the Shore Thing series captivated me from beginning to end. If you’ve not read a previous title in this series, don’t worry, the supporting cast and their relationships to the main characters are well explained. But do take the time to read their journeys as it’s all the better.
Stuntman Tate Astbury’s never-ending dares with his bestie Donavan are legendary. The newest one has him calling into a radio station to help a random guy out as his “Holi-Date.” Endre Michel isn’t looking for love, just a way out of the lie he’s perpetuated – that he has a “busy boyfriend” – nothing a fake date for Thanksgiving can’t fix. But, as Tate and Endre start to hang out – because you can’t be boyfriends if you don’t know each other – they begin to see their world come together in unpredictable ways.
With well-timed and well-crafted flashbacks we learn how Endre succumbed to substance abuse and depression and we watch as he stumbles in the present, with the recent announcement from his bestie, Jackson, who tells him he’s leaving. Leaving their co-owned yoga studio. Leaving their shared home. Leaving their friendship. Because… he can’t deal with unrequited love. Love!?
Endre isn’t the only one who is struggling. Tate has demons of regret in his past that won’t allow his soul to move forward. As they both struggle with shared grief, they are quickly drawn to one another. And yet, it feels their growth as a couple is organic. Endre’s mother says Tate is “besotted” and I must agree.
In a strange twist of fate, Grace Kilian Delaney depicts a scenario of six degrees of separation in such a way as to touch my soul in a deep, abiding way. Her sly sense of humor never fails to create levity at just the right moment and keep her characters true, like the radio station name. And her dialogue, even in a protagonist’s own thoughts, can be utterly compelling… like when Endre thinks, “Negative thoughts were just as addictive and toxic as the drugs he had taken, and he couldn’t keep swallowing the same lies about that night and expect to heal.” Or the simple pleasure of making someone smile, as Tate traces Endre’s lips and says, “’I was wondering if I’d ever get to see you smile like that for me.’”
Fans of yoga will love Endre’s perfectionism of the discipline. And if you know nothing about it? Ms. Delaney helps you believe you do. I only wish we could have gotten more of the “Boston” from Tate. When he meets Endre we’re told the “Massachusetts native spoke with a gruff Bostonian accent,” yet the only dialect is “’aight’.” I mean, have you ever heard Chris Evans’ brogue? Swoon!
Perhaps it’s the result of personal life events within the characters, which Grace Kilian Delaney notes in her acknowledgements, that makes this story seem so real? Childhood memories made me nostalgic for my own. And even though the grief of not saying goodbye brought unresolved losses to the forefront of my mind, it also reminded me how blessed I am to have had those moments with those I love. Whatever it is… I could feel this book! If you’re looking for a touching holi-date you can’t go wrong with 'Flirting with Fire'. It’s a reminder that to love someone is to take a leap of faith and love them even with all their flaws, or perhaps in spite of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2020Holy Cow! What can I say other than you Must read this! I was gripped from the first and drug through the end. It is book three but I followed along just fine, there were just characters I didn't know and would like to ( yep I will be reading the first too very soon). I will warn you as the author did in the blurb there are trigger warnings. (Attempted suicide, drug addiction, depression, But it is all handled so well, and if you can possibly read it, do. I found great help in this book)
Tate is at home in Boston to spend Thanksgiving with his dad but his dad had made plans with his girlfriend. On a dare, Tate excepts a challenge n the radio to be a fake boyfriend for a guy trying to get his mom and friends from setting I'm up all the time and he told them he had a boyfriend. When Tate meets Endre, the younger man is more than he imagined and sparks fly. They develop a fast friend with benefits relationship and decide to see where that goes even when Tate goes back to California.
Endre finds out his best friend and partner has gone behind his back to sell their yoga studio thinking it is the best deal for Endre because they want to keep him on. Endre does not want to sell but doesn't know what to do.
This book is packed full of all sorts of angst and drama from page one until the end. It is very well written and deals with depression and recovering from substance abuse in a very good and helpful way. I think if you have suffered or have friends suffering you should read this because I think it gives sound advice on listening. There are many twists and turns one I never saw coming.
If you like fake boyfriends, stuntmen, yoga, hurt/comfort, and a very good romance with some hot sex this is just what you need!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reading!
Tate and Endre story Is simply amazing. The plot caught me since the begining, and guided me into so many heartwarming moments, that caused me some tears and sighs because too many emotions at the same time. The author brilliantly balanced sweet and lovely moments with angst and despair, in a world full of amazing characters so real and unique. I enjoyed a lot Endre's strenght and life philosophy and how he accepted he deserved love and happiness. The book is about grief in its many forms and the healing properties of love and family. A wonderful reading!
