- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2018Format: KindleWhen DI McKinnon finds a dog tied to a piece of driftwood and close to death, he has no idea that saving the dog's life will eventually also save his own. Once again people are dying on West Uist. It never occurs to McKinnon that some of them may have to do with the fact that drugs may be involved. After all, West Uist is considered a peaceful, safe place to live. Most everybody has lived their all their lives and everybody knows their neighbor and they seem to look out for one another. The island is filled with interesting, quirky characters, including the members of DI McKinnon's small police force. Moray doesn't give a lot of hints along the way, so the culprits have been a bit of surprise in the end--at least for me. If you like what I believe are called "gentle" mysteries, you should like the DI McKinnon books.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen you live by the seashore or on an island, a lot of things tend to wash up on the shore: driftwood, the debris from shipwrecks, the proverbial bottles with messages, a dead body, a collie tied with ropes to wooden planks.
Wait, what?
Inspector Torquil McKinnon of the West Uist police in the Orkney Islands finds the dog, barely alive. Dogs seem to be disappearing, but no one has come across this kind of barbaric behavior. There’s also a rash of burglaries happening, a television program is broadcasting from the island for a week, and some shifty-looking businessmen are hosting a Scottish football star. All kinds of things are washing up on McKinnon’s island.
And then there’s a murder, or two.
The appropriately named “Flotsam & Jetsam” is the fourth mystery in the Torquil McKinnon series by British writer Keith Moray. Like its title implies, it meanders in a number of directions, until the bodies begin to turn up. Then it turns into a tightly written police procedural – with always a bit of Scottish humor thrown in (usually courtesy of Torquil’s priestly uncle).
Moray has published six Inspector MacKinnon novels. He’s also published three historical novels, “The Pardoner’s Crime,” “The Fool’s Folly,” and “The Curse of the Body Snatchers;” non-fiction books (under the pen name Keith Souter); and several westerns as Clay Moore. When he’s not writing, he practices medicine as a part-time doctor and medical journalist (he studied medicine at the University of Dundee). He lives in Yorkshire in England.
“Flotsam & Jetsam” is another solid entry in the series, with well-drawn characters, considerable games afoot, and long-buried secrets finally seeing the light of day.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2018Format: KindleThe good ones go quickly! I like this series but as my HS English always said, fiction is the willing suspension of disbelief, or something like that. This little town has the highest crime rate in Scotland!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018Format: KindleI would rate this book more highly except that the author plagiarizes his own earlier book. Whether it's sheer laziness, he thinks the reader simply won't notice, or his editor actually didn't spot it, I don't know. It's quite annoying to encounter the exact same page (word-for-word) describing the local newspaper's office, as well as the passage describing the local golf course layout. The rest of the book is good enough that I would expect the author to avoid repeating himself.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI do love the setting of these novels . Small island community with interesting characters . As the author writes in his post word, he loves the old fashioned police work required to solve murders, the golf course , bagpipes . I won't describe the whole plot as it covers many bases . Needless to say it is a fun read in spite of the murders . The characters are terrific .
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018Format: KindleThis is a pleasant series. Some surprises, good characters, and rather makes me want to go visit the land of some of my ancestors (rather explains some height differences - 5'4"-6'8" - in my family!)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAgain I really enjoyed another book in this series set in the fictional "West" Uist. The plots are good and I love the characters who are unique and quirky. I am interested by the fact that they don't have the modern forensic and scientific crime solving methods at their disposal. They must use their brains and their knowledge of the community. What I particularly like is the setting. I have visited Scotland and loved it (the people are so very nice) but I never got to the Hebrides. Now I would love to go there. In the meantime I hope that the author keeps writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relaxed complexity :)
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTaking place in the north western isles of Scotland the pace is realistically slower than cities. The vernacular is accurate as the characters dialogue with one another. The Scottish-ness of bagpipes and whisky drinking are not overdone as in some novels written in the USA. For example, people don't run around in kilts eating haggis :)
Some of the terms need searching since they are related to the Highland vocabulary and don't give a hint of their origin; I found that this makes it more appealing. The plot, like Moray's other novels, is twisting and turning yet realistic and adventurous making it fun and memorable.
