Fly Free (Light of Faerie Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

In the land of Faerie, lies are easily disguised as truths.

They were raised like sisters, the heir to the Court of the Day and her guardian.

And as rebellion darkens the land of the Day—and the faeries of the court fall under a dark magic that disconnects them from the land, dooming them to a slow, agonizing death—they will question all they know to be true.

Sevelle, the Light of the Day, is destined to rule one day. She possesses a rare form of magic, the ability to heal the powerful connection between faeries and the magic in the land, the connection that gives them life—if only she could figure out how to use this magic, or even find it within herself.

Jae lives in the shadows, watching over Sevelle as her guardian and listening to the whispers of the court brought to her by the winds. She longs for a life outside of the court, but knows her duty to Sevelle is more important than her own desires.

But when an unexpected proposition comes from none other than Lex, son of the rebel leader, Sevelle and Jae realize their lives will never be the same—and that evil may be within their own court more so than in the rebels that oppose them.

Walking paths far different than they imagined separates the sisters, but then a secret is revealed that may break them apart forever.

Fly Free is the first installment of the fast-paced, enthralling YA series, Light of Faerie. Enter a land of magic in the midst of a power struggle, where all is not as it seems and love may be found in the most unlikely places.

I love Allison Rose’s Tales of an Outcast Faerie series so far, but one thing I was eager to see more of was the world of Faerie, which is spoken of but rarely seen in those books (with the exception of the prequel Outcast). Fly Free begins a new series set in the same universe but focusing on the opposing court, and I was excited to see that this one takes place entirely in the magical realm!

The story in Fly Free alternates between two high-ranking faeries in the Day Court, Sevelle and Jae, who share a sisterly bond but find themselves on diverging paths in the greater conflict looming over Faerie. I like how they have contrasting personalities and motivations but clearly care for each other, which leads to quite a bit of tension when other characters inevitably come between them. There were also a couple of twists in this story that I certainly didn’t see coming, and which definitely added to the conflict and excitement!

As for the other characters, the rebels all have distinct personalities that make them interesting in their own right (my favorite among them is the magical creature, Ash the halkyr), and the main villain is so devious and fascinating that part of me wants to keep reading this series just to see what becomes of her by the end. Without giving too much away, I like that this story ends on a hopeful note that sets up an exciting new adventure ahead!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one! If you love stories with faeries, adventure, intrigue, and plenty of magic, you’ll definitely want to dive into the Light of Faerie series with Fly Free!

Technically, this starts a new series, but I definitely think its best for those who have read Rose's other books. There are references to other events, and knowing the Glorious from the other series enriches the impression she gives in this book.

Most of the story focuses on inner turmoil heightened by outside factors. Some things were resolved quite quickly, and there wasn't a lot of action in this book, but it's a good quick read. Sort of soft and light.

Closer view to the Glorious with this series. Love the rebels, hate the Glorious (shocker), and cannot wait to see how the potentials play out. Interesting twists and turns and loved reading about a few new animals. Wish there was a bit more magic used, but there is time for that. Cannot wait to read the next book!

This is one for epic fantasy lovers who don't want a 600 page tome to read!

There is a lot of world building and a ton of characters thrown at you in the first few chapters, but I soon got swept up in the main characters of Sevelle, Jae, and Lex and then the story took over the rest.

This world is very cool. I get the sense the fairies are little, not human sized, so I picture them flitting between leaves and branches. Also, they're all different colors so there's this beautiful lush rainbow world that is vividly painted and I kind of want to be part of it. Plus all sorts of wild sounding creatures that I loved!

The "villain" and the betrayals are viscerally felt, all without much violence which I appreciate. Plus, there's just a hint of romance, with more to come I'm sure.

**Presented with an ARC by the author via BookFunnel in exchange for an honest review.**

I want to start off this review by saying that I don’t always pair what I’m reading with music, but sometimes I just can’t read in silence because my brain won’t let me. When I began reading Fly Free, I had just turned on Two Steps From Hell’s album ‘Invincible’ and unbeknownst to me it was to be the most perfect pairing I could imagine. I would recommend these two paired together. Goosebumps!

There is a poetic flow to Allison Rose’s words, how she pulls you in and spins this tale that rises and falls like the gossamer wisp of smoke. You not only feel for Sevelle and Jae, the rebels, and all the other involved, but you feel their hearts as though they each were your own.

Someday, in the future, I will come back to this book and read it again. Perhaps in a few months, perhaps longer, but I know that this is a book I will read again and again, and I’ve no doubt that it’s a story I’ll find something new in each time. Truly a must-read!

This is the first book I have read from this author. I see she has written other books in this same world so I may be interested enough to give them a go.

With this story it has two leads, sisters in every sense of the word but blood. They have very different personalities and different outlooks in their world with one boy as the triangle between them.

I would have liked more back story on the characters, especially Moran and Lex. They have my interest and seem to be the more complex of the characters introduced so far. Im hoping that Sevelle will grow more of a back bone as the story unfolds. Jae needs to stop feeling sorry for herself and take control of her situation. Hopefully book two which I am about to read will give me more of what seems to be lacking for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new series, but with some ties to the other one.

I had a little difficulty in the beginning of the story to follow everyone in this new adventure. It might be me, but it felt a bit chaotic. Soon, things fell on their place, and from then one the book held his grip and got better and better!

Sevelle, the Light of the Day, is growing up in court with Jae, who seems to live in her shadows, always there to protect Sevelle. Until rebels show up and their lives change forever.

Looking forward to the second instalment.
