- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021The first person dying is the Fool but the title may also refer to the idiotic dreams of the killer.
Very good detective. You do not see it coming.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021I was surprised by the change of characters, but quickly made the shift as the story started to build. The villain was well hidden and then a clue appeared that was followed right to the villain of deaths and broken hearts. Thanks!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021An excellent blending of poison, murder and the historical events leading up to the battle of Bosworth, the defeat of Richard III and the ascendancy of the Tudors.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2021I always enjoy a well written historical novel and this one had me from chapter one. Four more words required.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2020Sir Giles Beeston, the newly appointed judge of the manor court of Wakefield, has arrived at Sandal Castle to take up his duties, accompanied by his assistant Will Holland. It is England, 1485, Richard III is king and the Wars of the Roses are ongoing. Richard's nephew and heir John de la Pole is ruler of Sandal Castle. His fool or court jester Ned Bunce has been found drowned in the castle moat after a formal dinner. First thought to be an accidental death, Sir Giles who has been ordered to investigate and the apothecary Doctor Musgrave perform an early form of autopsy and find he has been poisoned. There is a romance between Dr. Musgrave's daughter and Sir Giles' assistant Will.
The search for the killer leads Sir Giles to investigate various citizens of Wakefield. A guild member and a stranger, possibly a priest, are also found dead, complicating matters. Then Richard III decides to visit his nephew at Sandal Castle and a hunt is arranged to entertain him. No mention of the deaths or poisoning is allowed in the King's presence. However, a veritable blood bath of killings follows until the various crimes and the reasons for them are solved.
Keith Moray, author of The Fool's Folly, writes well. What people ate, how they dressed, and the early use of herbal medicines is described in abundant detail. The characters for the most part are believable. However, if you're not knowledgeable about the history of the period, the plot can get quite confusing. The final scene where the killer is revealed was too melodramatic for my taste.
I received a free copy of the ebook in exchange for an unbiased review.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020Really enjoy this read. One mystery after the next. Didn't know till the end who did what. Well wrote Sire. Looking forward to Summoners Sins. A Great Read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2020While this is book 2 in the Sandal Castle Medieval Thrillers series, it is a totally stand-alone story. The only commonality is the location. This book is set during the reign of Richard III, in 1485 and is full of the conspiracies and political turmoil of its time. Once again extremely well researched, I particularly enjoyed the historical aspect of the plot, and found myself on the internet getting more information constantly.
In terms of the story, it's well written, and the only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I felt it followed a very similar pattern to the first in the series, almost formulaic. The characters were very much the same, and the progression of the storyline unfolding too. It works well, but I'd be wary of a third novel that follows the same pattern - the perpetrator would be just too obvious! But if you enjoy historical fiction for the history, and enjoy a well-written story, then this is definitely for you.
My thanks to Sapere Books for the opportunity to read The Fool's Folly.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2022I didn't know until the last moment who the killer was. I love it. Hope he keeps on writing this type of thrillers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing
Good paced mystery, great historical content, explanation of Giles not picking up on some clues revealed at end.
Love the court room descriptions, good character interaction.
As he explains in the epiloge England may well have been a very different place if the crown had gone down a different route.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mystery novel interspersed with English history
Richard III is an interesting topic as there are already many opposing opinions about the murder/disappearance of his twin nephews. This mystery is set in Sandal Castle, it is very well told and I didn't have any idea at all where the story was going to take me. The Earl is an unusual character, he chooses to write poetry to his wife and about his fool but desperately feels his own unworthy talents compared with his ancestor Geoffrey Chaucer. The main protagonist being imperfect, having only one eye and regular disabling headaches makes him more believable in my opinion, also that he struggles to work out what is happening.
Very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime solving in the middle ages
I thoroughly enjoyed this book because history is fascinating and being able to read about it in fiction form with characters who make ethical choices, in an age where cruelty is commonplace, is a rare joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was fooled!
What a gripping storyline- if only we could change the true outcome of the consequences. Personally I always thought that Richard 111 had a bad press as the victors always write their versions. An awesome and compelling plot to follow which had me completely misdirected all the way through! A masterpiece of misdirection beautifully crafted. Keith Moray a true master of the written word!
