Forty Fathoms Down: An action-packed pre-WWII submarine adventure Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 345 ratings

A heart-stopping naval adventure! Perfect for fans of Tom Clancy, Michael DiMercurio, P.T. Deutermann and Harry Homewood.

It’s the first in a new breed of submarine … but is the Sebago doomed to become an iron coffin?

Connecticut, 1939

With the world poised on the brink of war, the US Navy is pinning its hopes on a new generation of super-efficient submarines. As the
Sebago’s test dive begins, Lieutenant Jack McCrary is excited to put the new sub through its paces.

But events take a horrifying turn when a series of malfunctions threatens the lives of everyone on board – including Jack’s black-sheep brother, Ed.

And when the
Sebago’s captain suddenly drops dead, Jack and his shipmates find themselves put to the test as never before.

The eyes of the world’s media are trained upon the
Sebago as a desperate struggle for survival begins. But no one has ever escaped from a sunk submarine before …

Will any of the crew ever see the surface again? And will Jack survive to avenge a devastating loss?

With echoes of the real-life sinking of the USS Squalus, FORTY FATHOMS DOWN is a tense historical naval adventure set just before the outbreak of World War Two with themes of loyalty and repentance.

I enjoyed the story, it as well written and interesting. I did find it disturbing that much was made over antisemitism. I served three years and eight months during the 1950s and never heard or saw many during that time period. i saw and heard a lot of other remarks and prejudices, but very seldom that one

Excellent story of the accidental sinking of a U S N submarine on it's first deep sea test dive.

Fast flooding, sailors drowning, inaccurate coordinates of the sinking site followed up by the race against the clock to locate and rescue the survivors before oxygen ran out, and after rescuing crew member finding the cause of the sinking.

Sub goes down because of a malfunctioning valve, the Navy blames the people who made it not the designer to save face. In doing do they lose the 1 officer who saved the crew of the sunkin sub

Written by a soldier. I served on submarines. This book is one mistake after another. I couldn't finish it.
He needs to do better research or stick to something he knows about.
