Foxe and the Cost of Wild Oats: An Ashmole Foxe Georgian Mystery Kindle Edition
Foxe and Lucy have had only two weeks to savour the pleasures of matrimony when a well-liked city merchant is found brutally murdered at the quay by the River Wensum. At once, they are drawn into the hunt for his killer. All agree that Josiah Hartley was an inoffensive, upright man and not at all the type to die in such a violent way. Yet someone hated him enough to want him killed. Who was it? His adulterous wife? An angry competitor? Someone he had cheated?
From the start of their investigation, Foxe and his new wife encounter layers upon layers of confusion, obsessive secrecy and cunning deception. Why did Mr Hartley condone the scandalous behaviour of his wife for so many years? What was the reason for the strangely complex way he had arranged his finances? By what means were the ownership and value of his successful business excluded from his Will?
Only after determined efforts, backed by all Foxe’s experience and cunning, are he and Lucy able to thread their way through a bewildering maze of dead ends, irrelevant diversions and carefully hidden pathways to reveal the identity of a vicious killer.

About the author

I started to write fiction as a way of keeping my mind active in retirement. I have read and enjoyed hundreds of detective stories and mystery novels in my time, while another of my loves is history. It seemed natural to put the two together and write historical mysteries.
To date, I have focused on two series of murder-mystery books, both set in Norfolk between 1760 and around 1800; a period of turmoil in Britain, with constant wars, revolutions in America and France and finally the titanic, 22-year struggle with France and Napoleon.
Why Norfolk? It is an inherently interesting county and happens to be where I live, which makes research far easier. Besides, London has been more than adequately covered by other writers. There seemed no reason why the rest of the country should be pushed into its shadow.
I have not regretted my choice. The period has far exceeded my expectations in richness of incidents, rapidity of change and plentiful opportunities for anyone with a macabre interest in writing about crime. I cannot see myself running out of plot material any time soon!
If you have read this far, may I offer you a warm welcome to the fascinating world of provincial England in the eighteenth century. You won’t regret venturing there, I assure you.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2023So this series is amazing and I'm falling for it more and more with each passing book. This book was so good. loved Lucy and how she is helping Mr. Foxe to see there is more than just the case. I also really enjoyed how she helped with the case and how they discussed it. This is a series I will get all of the books for cause I can't get enough. Each one is better than the next. I can't wait for the next book !!! Eeee. So excited. Highly recommend this series
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2021I have loved this series greatly, there are many interesting characters that have evolved into characters that feel like family. The historical details written with depth and accuracy, you can smell the coffee in the coffee house Ash attends in the mornings. In all previous books, I
have never been able to determine the guilty party until almost the end. The villian in this piece was easy to discern immediately, very early in the book.
The details off the how and why were still woven well in the story, but the who was never in question.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
This book had me gripped from the beginning. As with all his novels, William Savage envelops the reader on the investigative journey with Ashmole. Brilliant!
