Review
The author picked a brilliant format for this book using checklists. Not a single word of waste, just jam packed with exactly what you need to do, how and when you should do it in order to launch or a improve a system of continual improvement in your business. He starts the book with a wide funnel of WHY use a checklist, WHAT do you want to improve, HOW are you going to change, etc. Next he moves on to how to conduct a workshop to determine KPI's, who to invite, what to do, and even gives you the templates and why you should use them. No stone is left unturned as he moves on to what roadblocks typically come up along with possible solutions. I especially appreciated the attention to detail regarding data gathering steps and the typical issues of getting data for your KPI's (and how to solve them). He even goes into a checklist of how to construct the KPI dashboard itself. This book has spoiled me in that I will now expect other "how to" books to be as easy to follow and condensed as this one. Job well done.

I loved this book. Very clear, simple and easy way to fully implement a KPI system. The book applied lean principles and didn't leave out the need to assess, improve and manage the data that comprises the KPIs. Simply outstanding!

KPI Checklists surprised me in the best of ways. The first surprise was the style. The writing style is conversational, clear and easy to understand. The author uses lots of example and analogies to break the concepts down into really clear explanations. One great analogy was equating lagging measures to 'Looking through the rear windscreen' of your car and leading measures as the 'Front windscreen'. Put in these terms the value of leading measures when 'Driving your business' becomes obvious. The examples and anecdotes cover a wide range of industries and help keep it engaging and relevant.
The second surprise is how much value you get for the modest price, not huge numbers of pages, but an approach that really takes you from strategy through to KPI design and implementation in a practical 'how to' style. It really is a master class in KPI and measure design.

About the author

Bernie coaches businesses to develop meaningful KPIs and present their management information in the clearest possible way to support good decision making.
Frustrated by the random way in which performance measures are often chosen and implemented, Bernie set up Made to Measure KPIs in 2007. The goal was to develop simple, structured and repeatable ways to create KPIs that normal humans could design and use to improve businesses.
Using the experience (and scars) of working with a huge variety of organisations over his consulting career, Bernie has boiled that experience down into simple, sensible and practical advice on performance measurement. His books aim to share that expertise in a down to earth and conversational style.
Bernie lives in Sheffield, UK, with his wife and two children and some underused exercise equipment.

When I first began helping organizations identify KPIs, this book was a great asset. Packed with very practical tips and templates, KPI Checklists should be one of the first 3 additions to any KPI Analyst's book shelf!
For example, Bernie's simple diagrams (e.g. the KPI shortlisting matrix that plots importance vs availability) helped me coach business leaders and made the process of prioritizing KPIs easy to visualize. And, classifying KPIs into the important but not available quadrant as "aspirational" led quite nicely to my work with Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).
For example, some of our aspirational metrics led us to create the key result: "obtain a baseline of the aspirational metric by the end of Q4" so we could agree to make progress with certain KPIs that could not easily be currently tracked.
Bernie's approach can quickly be customized to meet your situation. For example, the KPI Definition checklist included 13 or so fields such as KPI Name, Frequency of update, Measurement intent, Person responsible for target setting, Units of measure, etc...
I ended up using almost all these fields plus adding a few custom fields such as "Business Unit" that were required for my client. My clients have found the KPI definition worksheet particularly useful both (1) when defning the initial set of KPIs and (2) as a tool that they required managers populate when requesting a new KPI be included in the company's performance dashboard.
The discipline that this KPI definition template brought going forward within the organization reduced the quantity of KPI requests while increasing the quality of these requests. The thoughtful templates and approaches outlined in the book can help create a metrics-drivein culture in an organization.
Bernie includes short links that let the reader access electronic versions for most templates included in the book. Access to these templates make the book quite practical for anyone working with KPIs.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2018The author had some valid points throughout the book. However, as I begin reading further within the text, it appeared to be focused more on the Technology field. Additionally, there were some good suggestions made within the text that can be applied to various situations.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2018The best guidance for establishing, maintaining and adjust KPI dashboard. Checklist is very useful for almost cases and conformity to all industry sectors.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2018Very useful, handson, well explained. A little self-advertising here and there, but not to a disturbing level.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2019The book is helpful, I'm disappointed to find that the templates offered are located at a broken link - so if you're expecting to use any of the worksheets or checklists promised - you're out luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars A well structured, practical guide with a checklist approach
This book is very helpful! It provides a comprehensive overview of an end to end process for the design, creation and roll out of KPIs, report production and dashboard design.
It includes lots of clear, simple checklists to prompt you with various considerations, including some that might otherwise be overlooked.
The book is easy to follow with examples, tips and pitfalls clearly indicated throughout.
Given the book includes guidance on the roll out of your KPIs, it also includes information that some people might consider "IT related", however this is not particularly detailed or technical and is included more to provide a non-IT reader with information regarding the wider implementation considerations.
The book contains a link to additional resources that nicely supplement the book. I had no issues in downloading the full set which include templates and samples for your own use.
At the start of the book, there is a specific section that states how the author defines a KPI, with the word "key" implying that it is really important and that KPI, metric and measure are used interchangeably in the book.
In a world of overused acronyms, I found this an extremely helpful definition that framed the rest of the book nicely - It was actually reading that specific section on the KINDLE "look Inside" sample (on the Amazon website) that prompted me to purchase a copy. If in doubt, I would encourage others to do the same...
Alternatively, if you're looking for a practical guide to help you create and implement KPIs in your organisation, you could just buy it!
