Free Spirit: Book Two of The Bound Spirit Series Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 2,098 ratings

The world is a very weird place, and for seventeen-year-old, Callie, it’s gotten a whole lot weirder. The paranormal is real, and not only are her five new guy friends some type of supernatural creature, she is too-- actually, she’s the most powerful one of all. As a spirit witch, she’s part of an ancient sect of witches that were believed to have been wiped out millennia ago and have the power to control life itself. Unfortunately, her magic is bound by a spell.

Good news: The spell is weakening.

Bad news: If it breaks before she can get it removed, half the town might go up in smoke atomic-bomb style. Mix in a jealous witch that has it out for her. The growing awareness that her new found friends are… very attractive. And the murderers that killed her friend Felix might be after her too. Callie has her hands more than full. Forget making it through her junior year. She just wants to make it to the end of October. In this intense, paranormal reverse harem, join Callie on the next chapter of her journey of healing from the horrors of her past while finding where she fits in the world of things that go bump in the night.

Warning: This book contains graphic violence, adult language, mild sexual content including light M/M, and deals in sensitive issues such as abuse, suicide, and PTSD. Reader discretion is advised.

At over 120,000 words,
Free Spirit is a full-length novel and is written with the intent that the reader is familiar with the events that passed in the previous book, Bound Spirit. The Bound Spirit Series is a 8-book series that will cross from young adult to new adult content.

RE: the physical paperback (not the story)
The series is lovely. Regarding the physical paperback books themselves: They're significantly larger than a regular paperback (regular-size paperback The Martian in pictures for comparison), and are very floppy for easy reading. The text size is normal. As someone with terrible vision, I appreciate the large spaces between paragraphs and the clear font choice. (There are occasional errors in margin spacing and line orphaning in all of these books, but no one outside the publishing industry would notice.) The colors of both the paperbacks and the hardcovers are beautiful!

Free Spirit is the amazing second book in one of my new favorite series! Delivered to my kindle a little after midnight on it's release day, I stayed up waiting and read until nearly 5am with absolutely no regrets! Even better than the first, Free Spirit continues Callie's amazing story as she discovers who she is and the supernatural world that she lives in.

Now knowing who she is and some of the power that she possesses, Callie begins trained with the guys to learn how to protect herself and learning about her origins and powers with her aunt. But even though she is surrounded by new friends and family and her years of abuse by her father are behind her, her life is getting crazier than ever. Nolan's crazy witch ex is targeting Callie, and it's beginning to escalate past the point of simply spreading rumors. Whoever killed Felix's family seems to be back and after Callie. And possibly worst of all, Callie is starting to notice that her best friends are really attractive and feelings start getting a little confusing.

This book picked up right where the last left off leaving no guessing to what happens in between. Bound Spirit ends with a POV from Donovan and with Free Spirit we start with the same scene from Callie's POV which I loved! There were a few chapters in this book from the guys' POV. This is my favorite writing style because the story is mostly seen from the FMC's POV, but we still get glimpses of the guys and how they are feeling and reacting to the same events as her.

Another thing I loved about this book was Callie's ptsd. A lot of books that deal with an abused character either show her very meek throughout the series or have some insane recovery where all the sudden by book 2 she's fine and has no triggers. Free Spirit shows Callie continuing to struggle with triggers while maintaining her strong persona and forcing the guys to treat her normally, not avoid ever mentioning fire or stairs. <spoiler> I especially liked how Nolan took the time to consult her on Halloween party decorations to ensure nothing would trigger her, but not treating her like a wounded girl who can't discuss what scares her. </spoiler>

We also get to know the guys a lot better. Callie begins to take time with each of them individually and begins to learn more about their pasts and their characters. She learns about their struggles, their families and home lives, and their futures. I loved getting to learn more about them all, especially Nolan, Connor, and Donovan!

The end of this book gets crazy good. Callie and the guys face off against some enemies and the result will have a huge impact on their lives. This cliffhanger gave me quite possibly the biggest book hangover I've ever had. With Free Spirit amazing me even more than Bound Spirit, I am extremely eager and beyond ready for the next book in this fantastic series!

We have witches, vampires, ghosts and demons. We have reverse harem. Any other author or story similar to this is ALWAYS horrible. If the author does a good book 1, you know book 2 will be so so so bad. Book 1 in bound sprit was good, book 2 is BETTER!!! It was so good! How? How did she do this?

PLOT!!!! There is a plot here. What? Paranormal Reverse Harem with a plot?! I was shocked that a lot of stuff happened in the book. There was character growth, the story moves forward, I am interested in what will happen next. Action, romance, drama and likable characters are in this story. I can hardly believe it myself.

Each character has issues they are overcoming. OH MY GOD....the men are all different! I did not think reverse harem authors could do this. Each character not only looks different, but each has a different personality with unique things happening in their life. Each guy is good for our main female in a different way. They are all close and it makes sense why they would share her. WHAT!!!!???? How can this be? Reverse Harem men are always the exact same and their sole purposes is to provide hot scenes in the book!

HA Wills does give mildly hot scenes with a promise of more. But, she also gives a real story with good people in it. This is the best reverse harem I have ever read by far. It is the most interesting paranormal romance I have read. Another good one in the series.

Free Spirit was unexpected. I knew that I'd enjoy it, and I knew that I'd probably binge my way through it as I tend to do with any new release that I've eagerly waited for.

However, there were definitely some fun surprises. First of all, I'd just like to say that we had better get used to some cold showers or thinking about that one obnoxious image that's sure to turn yourself off. Faster than I expected, Wills dives into teasing us with little bits of tension, scenes that hint at the action we'll get to throw ourselves into after the next few books. I, for one, think these little moments are just building up great expectation of things to come, but there will be many a reader swooning or bristling with frustration because we can't just have all the steaminess when we really want it....NOW.

Now, the pacing felt a little slower book one, but I didn't feel at all like my attention was in danger of wavering. The stakes are getting higher as Callie's magic fights the binding around her and the guys' become more and more committed to her being a part of their lives. The little dips that we get into the guys' perspectives are very telling, and I love that we're seeing the progression of their friendships and otherwise relationships through both Callie and their points of view.

In short (though, honestly, I can never do anything short), this book should be described as "a lot of sh*t happens". There's delicious character development all over the place, and, though he's still not my "best boy", I have to give a round of applause to Kaleb.

He was the one I was least drawn to after book one, but he's definitely growing on me. We get this little sparks of the "real" Kaleb, the one who has dreams, moods, goals, and a backbone that don't coincide with the Mr. Perfect mask he wears, and I like what I'm seeing so far.

Connor and Donovan both have some big unveiling going on too, as us readers (and Callie, a little bit more slowly) learn more about their backgrounds and the darkness they each fight. I'm kind of dying to get to know Connor more; especially as one of Callie's "called" wolves, I find his character fascinating. We get enough insider information to satisfy me for now, but I'm hoping we'll see him start to open up more WITH Callie and not have a lot of the insider moments restricted to his chapters or conversations with the guys. A lot of best boy material there.

Felix is fabulous, and of course Nolan, my best boy, is equally wonderful. Both of these characters make my heart happy and hurt in the best ways...they both have this loneliness to them that makes me want to hug them. Each of the guys have some kind of vulnerability, but, for whatever reason, theirs strikes me the most so far.

Overall, Free Spirit just sucked me in. Callie's magic is interesting, and there are so many little mysteries and issues revolving around it that my attention is just totally snared- with every thing that we start to understand, we learn there's still more to uncover. I love a complex puzzle, and Wills has certainly crafted an awesome one here.

This series is just getting better and better. Callie is still kicking butt but stuff is getting more dangerous and complicated by the page. I love the guys and I so hope Felix gets a second chance at life eventually because of what Callie is and that they all realise they oblong to each other.

Excellent humour, brilliant characters, superlative storyline, even the grammar and spelling is A+.... 'specially when you look at every other amazon book editing
Now book 3 is meant to be coming out in winter of 2019 which is just starting in the southern hemisphere and that means summer is just starting in the north, which means winter has finished....right? I have a headache. So how about you say the month and not the bloody season?
