The fourth installment of the Jason Freeh Mystery Series finds Jayce still working cases as he approaches his sixty-fifth birthday, all the while mourning the death of Jennifer, his longtime girlfriend / common-law-wife. A simple job—delivering a subpoena to a supposed street kid—turns into a complex case involving embezzlement, identity theft, campaign donor fraud, and ultimately murder.Jayce has never considered himself a real detective, just, "A guy who can tolerate sitting in a parked car all night, sipping cold coffee and peeing in a milk carton."Jayce could care less who murdered Richard Asher, until the killer tries to implicate him.

A fun ride through Portland's skate parks and assisted memory units to nail a group of unprincipled embezzlers while healing old hurts of the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery and absorbing colour - excellent
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 2, 2018
This novella is a joy to read. The story is there. The mystery and suspense are there. But, beyond that, the writing is thoroughly competent and enjoyable in a way that evokes the colour of the culture. It has wonderful lines like "I judged Richard to be in his mid-fifties, but he could have been younger. Maybe the impending trial had aged him prematurely. If it had, good, I decided. Innocent until proven guilty, I reminded myself, but I wasn’t listening." This is the fourth in Larsen's Jason Free Mysteries Series but it reads as a standalone for those of us who picked up this one first. Now I must read the other three.
