5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery and absorbing colour - excellent
This novella is a joy to read. The story is there. The mystery and suspense are there. But, beyond that, the writing is thoroughly competent and enjoyable in a way that evokes the colour of the culture. It has wonderful lines like "I judged Richard to be in his mid-fifties, but he could have been younger. Maybe the impending trial had aged him prematurely. If it had, good, I decided. Innocent until proven guilty, I reminded myself, but I wasn’t listening." This is the fourth in Larsen's Jason Free Mysteries Series but it reads as a standalone for those of us who picked up this one first. Now I must read the other three.
