DRESSED TO DIE: A Grace Gabbiano Mystery (Book 1) (Grace Gabbiano Mysteries) Kindle Edition

DRESSED TO DIE (A Grace Gabbiano Mystery, Book 1)(123,161 words)

The new job is supposed to be quiet, uneventful!
The last thing Grace Gabbiano expects to find on her morning run is a dead guy in a mint field. And really, he had to be wearing a formal evening gown, a woman’s wig, and a tiara? She’s only been on the job a week and now she has to lead a homicide investigation?

Grace thinks the dead guy was murdered…
Chief Aidan Cruz, Coburg’s new police chief, isn’t convinced the death is a homicide. And he sure as hell isn’t sure that Grace, who left Seattle PD under a dark cloud, knows what she’s doing. She’ll either prove she can’t handle it—or fall flat on her face—whichever comes first.

Vindication doesn’t equal satisfaction…
The autopsy cinches it, but before anyone can catch a breath, another dead guy is found propped up in a rocking chair on sweet old Gunny Spriggs’ front porch. Grace begins to wonder if a psycho with a fetish for women’s evening-wear plans to turn Coburg, Oregon into serial-killer central.

Never say die…
Grace’s suspect list is short, but does it actually include the killer? Will she figure it out before another dolled-up dead guy turns up? Or before the killer decides she’s too smart for her own good?

Ann Simas lives in Oregon, but she is a Colorado girl at heart, having grown up in the Rocky Mountains. She has been an avid reader since childhood and penned her first fiction "book" in high school. She particularly likes to write mystery/suspense/thriller with a love story and paranormal or supernatural elements. She is a three-time RWA Golden Heart Finalist. Simas currently has 42 books in print. All are available in both paperback and in ebook format.

An award-winning watercolorist and a budding photographer, Ann also enjoys needlework and gardening in her spare time. She is her family's "genealogist" and has been blessed with the opportunity to conduct first-hand research in Italy for both her writing and her family tree. The genealogy research from decade's old documents in Italian, she says, has been a supreme but gratifying challenge.

Dressed to Die: A Grace Gabbiano Mystery is another exciting thriller from Ann Simas. The setting is Coburg, Oregon. A small town which has all the characteristics of a small town: everyone knows everyone, lots of gossip, long time businesses but a new chief of police and sergeant. The new chief of police and sergeant hail from big cities and both come with some baggage. The book has a well-defined set of players. A long standing event is connected to the current murders. Some love and lust moves the plot along. Good detective work catches the killers. In addition to great plot development, the author captures the sense and importance of family. Can’t wait for more in this series!

Grace Gabbiano returns home to Coburg, Oregon, leaving her job at the Seattle PD under a cloud of suspicion, to work for the small town police force and help her large, extended Italian American family care for her missing sister’s children. Out for a morning run, she stumbles across a dead guy in women’s evening wear in the middle of a mint field and immediately thinks “murder”. Something about the scene just wasn’t right. Her new boss, and new police chief Aidan Cruz, thinks maybe she’s wrong, but gives her enough rope to hang herself.

This book had a lot of the things I look for in a mystery – flawed protagonist with redeeming qualities, quirky, meddling family, interesting murders, strong supporting cast, good sense of place, descriptions that left me feeling I was right there, etc. It also had things that annoyed me, like the author’s difficulty with the use of “it’s” vs. “its”, weird word choices (“I’m sure you disavowed the chief of that notion” when I think she meant “disabused the chief of that notion.”) and errors like “those summer afternoon’s” when I think she meant “those summer afternoons, no possessive “s.”

Also, towards the end of the book, there was an extended graphic sex scene which seemed highly unnecessary. Mind you, I have been known to enjoy the occasional adult entertainment, and I like realism in my fiction, but at this age, I don’t need to know how tab A fits into slot B how many times. I expect people to get busy, but I don’t need to know chapter and verse. And this was chapter and verse. It jarred me out of the story, annoyed me, and lessened the shine of what could have been a series I’d want to follow. It was almost like the author wasn’t sure of what kind of book she was writing.

So, not sure how I feel about this one. I think I will probably read the second one, because the characters grew on me quickly, and I’d like to see what happens next. But if I see more random possessive “s”s and unnecessarily detailed scenes, I’ll probably not read further.

Grace Gabbiano is new to the small town of Coburn, Oregon and new to the police department, having left the Seattle Police Department. So, the last thing that Grace needs is a homicide investigation to head up. But that's exactly what she gets plus she found the body on her morning run. And the guy was dressed in a formal evening gown, a woman's wig and and a tiara. Another case for Grace! A very well-written book with laugh out loud moments!

I liked the family feel of the main character, the story line was fresh. For me it was placed in an area I am familiar with which was an extra bonus.

You will be hooked from the start. This cast of characters with their humor and wit will keep you on the edge of your seat . You won't want to put this book down for fear of missing something . The plot twist will have you guessing who the killer is right until the reveal. This whodunit will leave you wanting more. I look forward to seeing what Grace will get into next.

I don't usually read police procedurals, but something about this one made me take a look. It was really enjoyable, and really dragged me in the further I went. Definitely looking forward to others in this series and I'm planning on trying one of her urban fantasies next.
