The General's Granddaughter (Dorothy Mack Regency Romances) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 905 ratings

A sweeping Regency romance! Perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

How long can Sarah keep up her charade?

Regency England

Orphaned and unable to support her younger brother, Sarah Ridgemont seeks the aid of her wealthy but long-estranged grandfather, Sir Hector Ridgemont.

However, fearing immediate dismissal, she decides to disguise herself as his new housekeeper until she feels able to ask for his help.

But when Sir Hector’s formidable neighbour,
Viscount Mark Eversley, sees through Sarah’s ruse, it seems to be only a matter of time before her true identity is revealed.

And under the intense gaze of the dashing viscount, Sarah finds it increasingly difficult to keep her secret — and her heart — intact…

The General’s Granddaughter by Dorothy Mack is a classic Regency romance full of suspense and intrigue.

I grudged every moment I had to pause in reading this book.
The characters were all wonderfully drawn -especially Sarah and Mark, of course, but Arabella's development was a nice surprise.
The romantic tension between Sarah and Mark was rendered perfectly.
I can't wait to read more by Dorothy Mack.

This was good for the most part. The love story between the main characters is really not believable. That should have been fleshed out a bit more. I particularly did not like the explanation of why the hero needed a mistress and his shallow dismissal of her. Most of this type of fiction makes mention of a mistress and usually they are let go in favor of the main character, but it doesn't typically bother me. This was just cold. I think it was the explanation of how he basically needed to use a mistress or he would have been a bitter man. Really? I wish Sarah slapped his face and found a different love interest. The family dynamic was interesting. Not the best book I have ever read, but not anywhere near horrible.

This was an original tale and a very good read. Rather an unexpected revelation that reveals the danger. The ending is satisfying and I rather liked the meaningful change in the character of Arabella.

The disowned and orphaned granddaughter returns to her grandfather to plead for support for her younger brother and is forced through a series of errors to masquerade as the new housekeeper. Jealousy, greed, attempted murder and lots of love interests follow...
This light romance is well written with some excellent characterisations.

Great story with a wonderful story line. Sarah pretended to be a housekeeper, to get access to her grandfather so she could ask him for help with her little brother schooling. But Sarah had nothing to worry about, since her grandfather new who she was,the minute he saw her. And when all was revealed Sarah had her hands full navigating her greedy relatives. But also in the mist of it all Sarah found love
    Thank you ❤

...was the lame way Mark justifies having kept a mistress for years and the spineless reaction of Sarah--as though his self-justification made all the sense in the world. Seriously? As another reviewer said, I wish she had slapped his face. She deserved better. Incredibly disappointing.
Mark: "Most men, most normal men, need women sometimes even if there is no affection between them, and not just for lovemaking. A woman softens the rough edges of a man's temper, a woman can keep a man sane. It may sound a strange thing to say, but I think we would not be standing here today if I had not kept a mistress these past three years."
I do like the author's writing style, but this was too much for me to stomach.

Well written, amusing story. An interesting social story, with lots of fun and frolic, with masquerades and an old and irate grandfather thrown in. Enjoyable read.

The false identity scheme and the potential tension betwewn the heros, which it harbors is resolved early on. Then nothing happens until 75% of the book. Then everything is crammed into the ending. A shame really.

Sarah and her eleven year old brother, along with her friend and old nurseries Lottie move to London to set up a dress shop to supplement the small monies left by her Mother's death.
Unable to see her way to earn enough to support her brother through schooling to prepare him for a decent livelihood, she leaves the shop to go and see her estranged Grandfather in country England. Through a series of events, she ends up at the door of her Grandfather's house taking the position of housekeeper, with the added knowledge of her unmet relatives are about to descend the next day!!!
Romance, unpleasant words, deceit, a will, and....murder?? This tale has many twists to keep one interested.
