The Ghost of Glendale: A Regency romance story you won't want to put down Kindle Edition
Can Phoebe and Duncan bring peace to a tortured soul…?
Regency England
Having never been in love, twenty-four-year-old Phoebe Marcham has no interest in marriage. Fiercely independent, she spends her days helping to manage Glendale, her ancestral home — a centuries-old estate full of long-buried secrets.
While out riding, Phoebe crosses paths with Duncan Armstrong, a charming wanderer who has just returned from the Continent. Finding that they share a penchant for mystery, Phoebe shares the biggest enigma that haunts Glendale: the tortured ghost of her ancestor, Simon Marcham, who took a secret sadness to his grave.
Convinced that Simon’s soul will never be at rest until they uncover his secret, Phoebe and Duncan set about unravelling the riddles that he left behind. As they delve deeper, a story of heartbreak and intrigue soon starts to emerge.
Faced with the darkness of the past, Phoebe is determined to make the most of the future. And as she and Duncan grow closer, she soon begins to wonder whether she has at last met her fate…
THE GHOST OF GLENDALE is a historical romantic tale set in Regency England, with a fearless heroine and an absorbing mystery at its heart.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2018This book captured me from the first page. I enjoy this time period and Phoebe Marcham is my favorite type of strong, intelligent heroine. She can hold her tongue when necessary but still she takes no guff. The mystery has a Romeo and Juliet quality, but has kept many people guessing for generations. I loved the author's descriptions and have dreams of building my own maze to get lost in. A romantic tale with requisite obstacles, one of them being Aunt Sophia, whose character I also adored.
This was a perfect escape read to be enjoyed in a favorite spot.

This was a lovely historical romance with just the perfect touch of paranormal.... so even if you are somebody who does not enjoy the paranormal I think you will still enjoy this book... additionally for such a short book it sure did pack a big punch... a lot went on in this book... this book really did have a little bit of everything the romance between Phoebe and Duncan... their relationship was so real and developed at such a wonderful pace, you really could feel the attraction between these two.... and then we have the ghost, is there really a ghost? And if so why is he still haunting Glendale? And that leads us to the mystery and the tragic and lovely story of Simon and Agnes.... A little taste of Romeo and Juliet...
When I first started this book I had forgot it was historical... but from the very first dialogue I knew it was, the author did a tremendous job of setting the time period... The only small issue I had with this book was it was difficult to connect with the characters... although that is consistently a problem with a book of this length... especially when it is as heavy on plot as this book was.....
Recommend for those afternoons when you have time to curl up with a book and read it cover to cover...

- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2018This is an historical story with a mystery that needs to be solved, well written with a nice description for the characters, but the story did feel to be lacking and didn't really grab my attention.
But non the less its an easy going read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2021This is a pretty good quick read. The first half was a bit slow, and the second half a bit rushed. It was a short book to have so many characters, and they weren't all fully developed. For example, the villain of the piece was introduced and dealt with in just a chapter or two toward the end.

The Ghost of Glendale is a gentle period romance reminiscent of Jane Austen, except where Austen livens her prose with acerbic humour, Kleinman has the mystery of a familial ghost and an ancient feud (thankfully not broken to new mutiny!).
The ghostly aspects are kept light and in keeping with the time the novel is set, and more focus is on the solving of the family mystery whilst balanceing the demands of difficult family members in the present, both of which throw the protagonists into proximity and sympathy.
I was surprised at the frequency of non-chaperoned collusion between Phoebe and various male friends and acquiantances, but this is explained in the narrative via the relaxed attitude of her father and upbringing, and her past-sell-by-date marital status (practically an old maid in her late 20’s). Plus the plot would have been far less intriguing if Phoebe had been bound by stuffy rules and social mores; her rebellious streak keeps the plot moving and helps modern readers engage with her.
In terms of the romantic side of the plot, this is sweet and clean, with lots of misunderstandings arising from polite company manners and reserved, delicate temperments (in both genders). This is, of course, in keeping with the communication difficulties inherent in the time and setting, and reminded me of Emma Woodhouse’s utter inability to fathom the finer feelings of those around her!
I found this a lovely old-fashioned read, in which a plucky heroine and her dashing suitor solve mysteries together and fall for each other, to a backdrop of small family vexations. I would recommend this to fans of historical romance with a touch of the paranormal.
“Ah, another human being,” said a disembodied voice, startling her into silence as she jumped to her feet to identify the intruder. “Had you not laughed I might have turned in another direction and missed you completely. I am entirely lost and throw myself upon your mercy.”
The voice, unmistakably Scottish, belonged to a man who appeared through the trees mounted on a very large chestnut. She watched him with open curiosity as he too dismounted and drew nearer, hair darker than her own and with hazel eyes that were flecked with green.
“Duncan Armstrong at your service,” he said, “though I am hoping it will be the other way around.”

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2018My Review The Ghost of Glendale by Natalie Kleinman
The Ghost of Glendale is lovely British fable about finding love with a ghost twist. It works really well, and I enjoyed reading it. The best thing about doing blog tours is reviewing books and enjoying books you would not usually read. This is one of them and the fact that I enjoyed it makes it even better!
The Good
Enter 19th Century England. Meet the lovely strong-willed Phoebe. She is young and single, but at that time she was deemed old. Then you have Duncan who is the handsome man, and this is their story. But they meet and fall in love solving the mystery of the family Ghost.
The Bad
I wanted a bit more of the ghost! More adventure finding the cup and more mystery with Duncan and Phoebe. It was frustrating a bit when Duncan went away because of his mum.. but also perfect for introducing the other less nobleman, the cad!
The Ugly?
Very little of this book is ugly. It is a sweet classic romance and the perfect length for a good read. All of those Austen fans will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Regency atmosphere
I really enjoyed this story as I have with all this author’s Regency books. This was a little different in concept, but just as good.
Natalie Kleinman always writes well and manages to capture the essence of the era so accurately.
Definitely worth 5 stars and I believe there’s another one to look forward to, soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Regency Romp
I have to admit, Regency romance novels are not a genre that I read. I have heard other people raving about Georgette Heyer and others of that ilk but have never been drawn to Regency as a genre. However, something about this book piqued my curiosity when I was offered the chance to read it and, now I have, I am wondering why it has taken me so long to discover it.
This is a rip-roaring tale of family feuds, restless spirits, rugged Scotsman and feisty heroines, wrapped up in the restrained and genteel conventions of Regency England which is an interesting juxtaposition. The heroine of this book, Phoebe Marcham, is forged in the best traditions of the tempestuous renegade, baulking against the confines that society placed on women at this time, in the vein of an Elizabeth Bennett or a Jo March. Considered to be an ‘elderly sinister’, unmarried in her late twenties, she is not unduly worried by her situation until the equally unconventional Duncan Armstrong storms into her life.
At the same time, an unsettled family spirit is demanding that Phoebe explore her family history and clear his blackened name so his soul can rest and she can bring a two hundred-year-old feud to an end. Along the way there are cousins to be married off, cantankerous aunts to mollify, nefarious suitors to weed out and the social whirl of Regency England to navigate. Never a dull moment.
This book was easy to read and tremendous fun. The author has done a wonderful job of reflecting the language and mores of the time period and developing some rounded and likeable characters, as well as keeping you hooked on the mystery of the family ghost. I am sure any of you picking up this book will be as carried along by the story as I was.
Thank you, Natalie, for introducing me to a whole new genre, I look forward to reading more of your work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gentle and rather lovely Regency read
I always turn to a Natalie Kleinman book when I fancy a Regency comfort read, or trying to get into the mood for writing in the era myself. She is a mistress of the Regency romance in the spirit of Georgette Heyer and knows her genre inside out.
Talking of spirits, this book has one, with its own sad story to tell. It added an interesting extra dimension to the story, and to how Phoebe and Dunca’s own love story developed. A gentle read, with happy endings for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
I really enjoyed Natalie Kleinman’s newly published The Ghost of Glendale. It reminds me so much of Georgette Heyer that I hope Natalie goes on to write more in this genre. If she does I will be there.
