4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 280 ratings

It’s the final case for detectives Pollard & Toye! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, M C Beaton, Sophie Hannah and Faith Martin.

Family secrets come crashing to the surface…

Glade Manor, in the village of the Buckford, has been home to the Morley family for over a century.

For the past thirty years, the family has been looked after by their devoted former nursemaid, now housekeeper, Nanky.

But the family is cast into turmoil when the body of Nanky is found in a quarry, having been violently thrown from a cliff.

With the death clearly murder and the suspects all local, the puzzling case proves too much for the local police force.

Scotland Yard's
Chief Superintendent Pollard and Detective Inspector Toye are brought in to solve the mystery.

Who would have a grudge against an unassuming housemaid? Could it have been a member of the Morley family?

And will more dark secrets be uncovered in the grounds of Glade Manor…?

The Glade Manor Murder is the seventeenth cosy village mystery in the Pollard & Toye crime series: an intriguing police procedural set in rural England.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As has been evidenced in her many previous mysteries ( Unhappy Returns ), Lemarchand's forte is character development, and she delineates some memorable characters here. The appealing Morley family lives in a comfortable manor house in the tranquil English countryside, looked after by their devoted former nursemaid, now housekeeper, Nanky. Patriarch John Morley is a well-known book restorer, a business his son Richard is beginning to take over; daughter-in-law Gail does research for the firm and for a historical society. Another, adopted, son, Adrian, is an Oxford professor. When John's first wife, Fenella, the mother of Richard, died, John married her closest friend, with the approval of all. The family is cast into turmoil when the body of their beloved housekeeper is found in a quarry, having been thrown from a cliff; the body of the family dog lies nearby. Chief Detective Superintendent Tom Pollard is called in to solve the case. The mystery here isn't much, and is telegraphed very early, but that's no matter. One reads this novel to get to know the people.

From Library Journal

"Nanky" Gover, nanny and then housekeeper to the Morley family, has lived happily at Glade Manor for 30 years. After returning from a distant wedding, however, John Morley and son Richard, antiquarian book restorers, discover her body at the bottom of the quarry. Scotland Yard's Tom Pollard investigates, suspecting at first John's adopted son, but soon getting on to the real motive and killer. This straightforward and unsurprising plot proceeds in an efficient and familiar manner: pleasant enough as filler, but nothing remarkable.

The entire series has been outstanding. 1-17, so is this really the final book? Why? I would have liked more to look forward too.
A serious reader has a relationship with good characters.they become old friends. I will hate to see these guys go.

Today I finished two different mysteries which had such a similar plot that I find it hard to believe that this could have been entirely coincidental. THE GLADE MANOR MURDER, published about 1988 involves some complex covering up, two men who have lived for many years in Australia and a well plotted mystery with interesting characters, an interesting location and good dialog. The other book, by Eric Wright, an Englishman who emigrated to Canada, is titled DEATH IN THE OLD COUNTRY, published in pb in 1986, has, a central characters two men who have lived for years in Canada, and a Canadian detective on vacation. Doesn't sound too much alike but trust me, the plot is very similar. Both are well written although the Lemarchand book does have some small errors that the copy editor should have caught.

I really enjoy old British mysteries and Ms. Lemarchand writes some very good ones. I've only read the one Eric Wright but he showed great promise back in the 80's and presumably (see the honors and awards he has received) he only improved.

There's far too much coincidence and mere good luck substituting for methodical police work, and too much filler, including annoying repetition. Nonetheless the story is absorbing and well enough written to be above average

I have held off writing a review for each of the 17 tales in this series because you tend to end up writing similar feedback. I have enjoyed immensely the trials and investigations of Messrs Pollard and Toye. Easy and informative . If I had a criticism it is may be the illegitimate thread and the emigrating out of the UK possibly crops up a little to frequently and one wonders why our erstwhile detectives never had a case in London . Having said all o f that an 118th book would surely be a welcome addition . I trust those of you who also get this far have had the same enjoyment as I .

I have just finished the 17th book about Pollard & Toye of Scotland Yard. I have read the whole series one after the other and enjoyed them all tremendously. Loads of detail in the stories but never too much. So well written!! Courtesy and kindness thread through each tale and friendships built through the cases are often followed up. I'm just sad I've reached the final story.
