Introducing the "A Governess for the Brooding Duke" Novel - Discover NOW The New Regency Romance Book by Bridget Barton!
Lovely - Romantic - Exciting!
When Georgette Darrington’s father dies suddenly and with serious debts, she imagines things cannot get any worse. But when her attorney tells her that the family home must be sold to pay the debts, leaving her penniless and without a home, her only choice is to become a governess.
In no time at all, Georgette finds herself in the grand mansion of the Duke of Draycott, teaching his delightful, orphaned nieces. But, the more time Georgette spends with the little girls, the more she realizes they are missing their home and life in Wales, not to mention their own language. Georgette must find a way to convince the Duke to take an interest in the girls’ lives, and she must also find a way to keep their native language alive despite his determined instructions to the contrary.
As the tragic tale of the Duke’s sister and her forbidden love unfolds, Georgette must struggle with the deprivations of her lowered status, not to mention the spiteful plots and schemes of a jealous housekeeper and nurse. As her loneliness threatens to overwhelm her, Georgette must find a way put the splintered family back together, even as she battles her own feelings of love for the handsome, taciturn Duke.
"A Governess for the Brooding Duke" is a historical romance novel of approximately 80,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2017This duke Draycott is an a--, an overstarched zealot, but no matter Ms. Georgette Darrington was certainly no shrinking lily and she was more than able to handle such a challenge. The Duke’s whole household was controlled by the three bullies the Butler, the Housekeeper and the Nurse, imagine bullying two four-year-old and constantly bringing them to tears, what a shame and disgrace, Georgette made sure they didn’t get away with their peevishness. After their petty bullying tactics didn’t work on her, they then seek to report her to the Duke her employer, what a bunch of losers but they soon learn the error of their ways. Although Georgette never set out to fall in love that damnable cupid came calling all the same and what an unlikely recipient, but as usual Ms. Georgette handle things with style and finesse, believe you me I wanted at times to box his Lordship ears, to knock some sense into him but everything worked out even though it was not easy having being fired from her post and all that took place, I’m going to expand any further, you just get a copy read it and see what wicked things the three bullies got up to and if I was too harsh on the Duke.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2017This book was certainly a clean, sweet surprise. The Governess was young, sweet, smart, and penniless. If she didn't find a job before her late father's house sold she would have nowhere to go. Fortunately for her the employment service has one opening; the last three governesses all left after a short time and the agent recognized it had become a difficult position to fill. It was just what she needed.
The Duke was certainly brooding. He was so filled with anger and guilt he couldn't handle one more problem. It was to the point where new staff (such as governesses) were not allowed to complain about anything the other household staff did, and if they did they were more likely to be fired than have the staff problems fixed.
Then there are the two sweet little girls, twins of about 4 years old, who are caught in the middle. They had seen so many governesses leave that they were afraid to trust a new one because she could be gone any day. The Duke could't even look at them because they looked so much like their mother, and when they talked they had such heavy Welsh accents he couldn't stand to hear it. The governess was supposed to see to it they developed proper English accents or they were not allowed to talk at all. The household staff bullied them and told them they were awful children if they didn't speak "right", and they are terrified of their uncle, the Duke.
Somehow this situation has to be fixed and the new governess, Georgette, is the right woman to do it. If only she can figure out how!
I really enjoyed the story; it was a little bit formulaic but I expected it to be. I don't remember any editing problems, the author really likes describing beautiful skies and landscapes which I didn't think really added to the story. The writing at the beginning of the story seemed to me to be rather simple so I thought maybe this was the author's first book, but it got more interesting as the story progressed. Overall I liked the story very much.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2023This book was captivating. I love a book that is a little off the norm. Georgette and Hamilton have a tumultuous relationship. Going in circles only to end up where they started. His twin nieces were the source of their problems or so you think but in reality is guilt and hurt for his prior behavior. Will they find a way out of this…. Of course but how will they manage it? Lovely read!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2017You may have heard the saying, "Adverbs can kill a good book." It can and it did. I don't think I've ever read a book with so many instances of "quite" and "rather". These two words were used so often and seemed to be so arbitrarily used, that it often took away the meaning of the sentence and made for awkward reading. Not to mention that it got irritating.
The story had a ton of potential. Georgette has lost her standing in society due to her father's lack of control at the gaming tables. He has died, she's lost everything, and is relegated to becoming a governess to a set of twin girls for a duke that has no love for them at all. He has no contact with the girls other than to ride in the carriage to church with them on Sundays. He's forbidden them to speak around him because of their Welsh accents and has ordered everyone in the household to never let them speak Welsh and has told Georgette that they are to be anglicized.
Georgette instantly falls in love with the little girls. She soon becomes their advocate in all matters, including standing up for them with the duke, their uncle.
As far as I'm concerned, this is where the story ended.
The Duke of Draycott didn't want to be bothered by anything in the house, especially those little Welsh girls that his sister gave birth to. He was cold and unfeeling and as the story progressed, it was revealed as to why. I felt bad for him on more than one occasion. It lent his character some vulnerability and showed that he wasn't always a stoic.
This is a historical romance, the keyword being "romance". I didn't see any romance between Georgette and Hamilton. When did they fall in love? When did they start seeing each other as more than employer and employee? I didn't feel any chemistry between the two. I don't think they saw each other enough to form a connection.
I think if the story had been longer and actually explored the two as a man and a woman who were attracted to each other, maybe thrown in some forbidden touches or kisses or something, this wouldn't have flat-lined.
I did enjoy the story as far as the little girls went. The author did a great job of portraying them as four years old and kept them in character. It's tricky writing characters who are little kids and she did a fantastic job of doing it. (Eat your heart out, Nora Roberts!)
I didn't hate the book, but I didn't love it, either. I will still read books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars More like the old romance classics
The only problem with this book is the title and the cover, which is misleading. It is well-written and reminded me of Jane Eyre. I very much enjoyed reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
What a gripping tale, I usually find it a task to get gripped into historical regency romance book as they are too tame, but this storyline was attention grabbing. The characters are straight out of a Charles dickens novel I could just see the spitefulness of the household staff, it was hilarious at times.
Couldn’t help falling in love with Georgette as she was just a down on her luck young girl trying to survive and she falls in love with the Dukes twin nieces, it was just meant to happen.
Enjoyed it immensely, mostly when the duke went looking for her shortly after showing her the door, wish the auntie had made him working more for the information of her whereabouts, but I guess she didn’t want to spoil a good thing.
I am voluntarily reviewing a book gifted to me by the author with no obligation

5.0 out of 5 stars love it very much
Very touching and inspiring book!
Fiist time I read an English book, love it very much. I am French and read in english but not that type and found it most interesting!
The love, softness and kindness of Georgette after all she has lost is just amazing and inspiring. She has such a great heart!
To have to lower herself is society status as a governess was something but to be treated the way the nurse, butler and house keeper treated her and not say a word demands a great deal of courage.
The people in the book seem so alive and authentic, the way Bridget Barton describes them and have them react with one another is just fantastic. She wants us to hate the Duke, then love him.....that is exactly how we feel!
Shead tears at times,very touching.
Really enjoyed the book and recommend it to everyone
