Gray Hunter Kindle Edition
"Mark Rogers knows that the stylish, polished picture frame in which we live is riddled with holes, in which worms live."
—James Sallis, author of Drive
Hugo Berenson has spent a lifetime hunting down ex-Nazis and bringing them to justice. Now in his 60s, with a legendary career behind him, he’s gone to ground in Jersey City, living a quiet and anonymous life. Just another old man on a park bench.
When a nine-year-old girl goes missing, and when the authorities barely raise a finger to find her, the panic-stricken mother seeks out Hugo Berenson.
A hunter renowned for tracking his prey.
For never giving up.
Helping Rosa find her child didn’t make sense. I was done. Slow. Old. Only minimally interested in my fellow man.
The thing is, I’d spent a lifetime hunting men to bring them to justice. It was a hunt of retribution. Many years of it.
I’d never hunted someone to save them.
Evil flows – from Dachau to the alleys of Jersey City.
One man will stem the tide.
Gray Hunter.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2022Mark Rogers has introduced the hero of what is expected, hoped, to be a series of adventures. In the process he brings his formidable skills as a travel writer and memoirist to bear, evoking the sights, sounds, smells and ambience of Jersey City, my ancestral homeland. So I experience a heady mix of familiarity and discovery as I follow Hugo Berenson through neighborhoods I've known and lived in, and others, through Mark's narrative, I'm visiting for the first time. Think of finding your way around Dublin with Joyce's ULYSSES as your guide, then take a day trip to Jersey City with a copy of Gray Hunter in your pocket. Did I mention that our hero is 60 years old, and is in possession of the wisdom that comes with many decades of living on life's sharp edges and in its shadows? Certain age- and lifestyle-related limitations are also confronted and sometimes overcome. It's refreshing to meet a hero who, if a film were to be made of this book(and Hollywood would do well to sit up and take notice of Gray Hunter's cinematic potential!), would not be portrayed by a Tom Cruise or Dwayne Johnson. Starting with Rogers' Mexican Noir novels, he seems to have created a new subgenre, and he has brought the Noir spirit to a town too long ignored as the locale for such a story. All this is accomplished in the space of 95 fast-turning pages, careening to a satisfying conclusion which effectively sets up Hugo Berenson's next adventure. I can't wait to dive into it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers since I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and on planes. I downloaded Gray Hunter the night before a six-hour flight. Usually, I watch a movie but not this time. I got wrapped up in the story right away. Even though the story has a male protagonist – Hugo Berenson – there was none of the macho stuff you sometimes get in this genre. I’ll be looking for the sequel (I hope it becomes a series). One thing I’d like to see more of is Hugo’s romance with Giselle. If you like Equalizer-type stories, but with less blood, download Gray Hunter.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2022I like how the author paints the picture of the story he is telling and is able to make me easily visualize each bit of the action. I feel as if I was right there searching for the lost girl and experiencing all the drama along with the characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2022This was a fast read – cinematic in a way – a good way. I felt a lot of empathy for Hugo Berenson and his sidekick, Maria. It also looks like there’s a volume two on deck – can’t wait to read that. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2022The seamy side of Jersey City is on full display in this riveting tale of redemption over moral depravity. Rogers has a real talent for turning a noir thriller tale on its head with disturbing plot twists. I read it in one go!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2022I'm a big fan of author Mark Rogers' work. My problem is I just haven't read enough of it. Red Thread and the co-authored, The Death Dealer (with Adam Rocke) are my paltry efforts at keeping pace with his output. An invitation to read one of his latest offerings, Gray Hunter, was too good to pass up though.
It's an intriguing book. An elderly retired Nazi hunter, Hugo Berenson joins forces with a concerned Hispanic woman, Maria to search for her missing younger sister. Maria is initially sceptical about Hugo being up to the task. She might be underestimating our sixty-something year old. Diamante is missing and mother Rosa and Maria are at their wit's end.
There's some disturbing elements just bubbling away under the surface. What could someone possibly want with a nine year old girl? Shudder! We cross paths with some desperate sorts, where debts can be settled by trading flesh and blood.
Hoboken, New Jersey, disappearance, kidnap, betrayal, police disinterest, family, prison, gangs, card games - high stakes poker, debts, rough bars in rougher neighbourhoods, suspicion, secrets, trafficking, history, family loss, the Holocaust, Nazis, Mossad, manhunts, revenge and justice.
I was gripped throughout. Rogers skillfully blends Hugo's back story and family history of loss and a life spent tracking down evil, with a current, time pressing urgent investigation to save an innocent victim. Along the way he acquires a surrogate family to go some way towards recompensing him for the loss of his own. Hugo and Maria make a formidable double act throughout. Berenson, also discovers a new sense of purpose and leaves us with a new spring in his step.
I'm hoping Mark Rogers has more Hugo Berenson stories to tell. Future or past? Deal me in.
Gray Hunter is a troubling tale, but also an uplifting one.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2022I’ve been a fan of Rogers’ writing since reading his Mexico Noir series (Iron Star and Along the Wire were two standouts for me). It’s great to see him venture into the new territory of Jersey City and its environs, with a likeable hero on the far side of 60. Rogers knows the area well, having lived there for many years, and as in his Mexican books he brings tons of interesting detail into his fast-paced story. To my knowledge this area hasn’t been overly explored in detective fiction (or in this case an ex Nazi hunter), and it seems to me that Rogers has a chance to do something like Lawrence Block did for Manhattan in his Matthew Scudder novels.
Gray Hunter is highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2022I've enjoyed reading Mark Rogers' work before - and his newest novel reaffirms my belief that his stories NEED TO BE MADE INTO MOVIES!
Hollywood, are you listening?!
If you're looking for a story that has both real heart and edge-of-your-seat, can't-turn-the-pages-fast-enough excitement, GRAY HUNTER should be on your nightstand or in your Kindle!
Great job, Mark!
Looking forward to your next book!
