The Guns of Zanzibar: The Great War has begun... (Marcus Baxter Naval Thrillers Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 84 ratings

Don’t miss this gripping naval adventure set in East Africa! For fans of Dewey Lambdin, Patrick O’Brian, Chris Durbin, Douglas Reeman and Antoine Vanner.

Tensions are building as the Great War looms…

August, 1914

Lieutenant Marcus Baxter has been sent from cold, grey London to the tropical climes of Zanzibar in East Africa on the pretence of carrying out a survey on the local naval station.

In reality, the Royal Navy’s Intelligence Division have sent Baxter to find out if one of their ex-members, Mr Arbuthnott is now working for a potentially hostile foreign power and sharing British secrets.

Baxter is under strict orders not to reveal his true mission to anyone in the small naval contingent he’s been sent to, which makes executing his orders complicated.

He leaves the British protectorate of Zanzibar and crosses the water to the German-occupied port of Dar Es-Salaam to try and subtly gain intelligence.

But once he arrives, he is certain he is being followed.

Returning to Zanzibar, he discovers that the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand has been shot, escalating tensions between the British and German forces and making Baxter’s mission more urgent.

Where is Arbuthnott? Is he betraying the British?

Can Baxter complete his mission before his shadowy stalker catches up with him…?

THE GUNS OF ZANZIBAR is the fourth book in the Marcus Baxter naval thriller series: action-packed, authentic historical adventures following former Royal Navy officer Marcus Baxter during the early 1900s and through the first world war.

THE MARCUS BAXTER NAVAL THRILLER SERIES:

Tim Chant grew up (mostly), went to school in East Anglia and university in Scotland. He took his History degree and did the only thing he could with it - joined the civil service. When not shackled to his desk he writes science fiction, alternative historical fiction, historical fiction and any other fiction that takes his fancy. When not doing that, he's an inveterate roleplayer and wargamer (and getting back into historical fencing). He lives in Edinburgh with his partner and their two rabbits.

'The Straits of Tsushima', book one of the Marcus Baxter adventures, is his first historical fiction novel. As T Q Chant, he also writes science fiction, steampunk and speculative fiction.

What I so like about this series is the geography, the small concentration on individual action, and old technology being adapted to modern application.
    A great read

3 1/2 stars. A solid mystery starring Jane Austen as the investigator, though with plenty of help from her sister Cassandra. This is the fourth in the series and you do not have to read the others to understand what is going on here. There were plenty of twists and turns to this mystery and I did not expect the solution.

Of course, the depiction of Jane isn't going to be 100% in line with behaviors and thoughts from the time period because this is for a modern audience. So there has to be some leeway given to the author. Most of it I could except but at the end there was some steps she took that could get her in big trouble in this day and age so it is even more unbelievable then. That led me to lower my rating. I have read others in this series and while she pushed some boundaries I found them acceptable. Here, I just didn't find it believable.
