On May 2, 1923, the territorial legislature approved Joint Resolution No. 1 designating the pua aloalo (hibiscus) the flower emblem of Hawaii. The pua aloalo, or yellow hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei) was designated the official state flower of Hawaii in 1988. Hibiscus prints are popular for both men’s and women’s aloha wear in Hawaii.
