The Outdoor Circle, a community beautification group founded in 1912, advocated the adoption of the hibiscus as the official floral emblem of Hawaii. On May 2, 1923, the territorial legislature approved Joint Resolution No. 1 designating the pua aloalo (hibiscus) the flower emblem of Hawaii. The pua aloalo, or yellow hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei) was designated the official state flower of Hawaii in 1988. Hibiscus prints are popular for both men’s and women’s aloha wear in Hawaii.     Dorothy Pfaff is the granddaughter of Mary Pfaff, who was renowned in her heyday as "The Beatrix Potter of Hawaii." Dorothy has kept her grandmother's legacy vibrant with her generous support of the Pfaff Library (formerly the Inouye Library) at Mahina State University in Mahina, Hawaii. Dorothy is also a creative force in her own right. Her latest project is the Island Colors line of coloring books for all ages, exclusive to Hawaiian Heritage Press.
