About the authors
Ian Whates is a writer and editor of science fiction, fantasy, and occasionally horror. He is the author of seven novels (four space opera and three urban fantasy with steampunk overtones), the co-author of two more (military SF), has seen sixty-odd of his short stories published in a variety of venues, and is responsible for editing around thirty anthologies.
His work has been shortlisted for the Philip K Dick Award and twice for BSFA Awards. His novel Pelquin’s Comet, first in the Dark Angels sequence, was an Amazon UK #1 best seller, and he has seen his writing translated into Spanish, German, Hungarian, Czech and Greek. Ian served a term as a director of SFWA (the Science Fiction Writers of America) and is a director of the BSFA (the British Science Fiction Association) an organisation he chaired for five years.
In 2006 Ian founded multiple award-winning independent publisher NewCon Press by accident, and he continues to puzzle over how the press now has 90-odd titles to its credit and counting.
Ian lives in a quiet Cambridgeshire village with his partner, Helen, and a far-from-quiet cocker spaniel called Bundle.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2015Really enjoy this series. Easy read but still plenty of twists and turns. Plus every plan they make goes off track, just like in life. We must all learn to adapt.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2015While each book may be read as a stand-alone offering, there are numerous characters and it takes a while to get back up to speed. The prologue helps. Book 4 has plenty of action and in that respect it does not disappoint. Some characters are 'short lived' and there is some frustration trying to keep up. The book is well edited (for an Indie offering) and has solid length. If you are a fan, Book 4 is the best to date in the series. If you are looking for a hard science, in-depth character development or social science fiction, this is offering is not your cup of tea. If, however, you like fast paced fleet and ground action provided in an epic format--this offering does not disappoint. I will purchase Book 5 in January.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2015Although the story gets complicated at times, it continues to be exciting and filled with tension. The many shifts of characters and settings gets confusing at times, but the main character's point of view carries the story through.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2016So so. Ok, but not an exceptional carry over in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2018I greatly enjoyed the series. I wait until the complete series is available as a set then order it. I like novels and not waiting for the next chapter of a serial. The story is to good to be broken up in sections.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2015An outstanding addition to the Human Legion universe! I was hesitant at first when Tim Taylor brought on Ian Whates as a co-author, afraid it would change what made the series great. Luckily, try as I might, I could find no trace of differing voices in the narrative and the story was as great as ever!! I agree, it could've been longer, book five could come out tomorrow or we could find out that Hollywood came to their senses and was turning it into a movie, but.... otherwise it was fantastic. Overall, I whole heartedly give it five stars!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2016The authors have developed a great set of characters who can hold the story line together. I have found that the story flows well from book to book without the usual skips and starts often found in other authors works. The story has enough unique technologies and events to hold your interest.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2015The story continues, leaving a need for more and more. What happens next is obvious, but how is the general going to do it? I know that I can't wait to find out! This book has no obvious editing errors(I wish I was an early reader). It is an action story with few pauses for reflection. I loved it and obviously want more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Fight for Feedom
Full of action and suspense the story moves quickly through the worryof battles that look like being lost without dramatic intervention, covert operations, new weapon development. Gosh the excitement never dwindles. The political and emotional interaction between the characters is superb. The characters are well developed and there are so many I couldn't count them. In my 80+ years I have never become so engrossed in reading a story, it had me spellbound. What is particularly impressive is the realism created by the author when, unlike in most modern films, our heroes are also vulnerable to be shot or injured. How often do we think how silly it looks when the Bond like character can run through a hail of bullets without getting a scratch whist hitting an enemy with every shot from his revolver. Not so with this book and the realism dragged me into believing that I was there fighting with the Human Legion. I would recommend this series of books to anyone who likes excitement.

Another fine book in the saga
Kudos
Entertaining and pertinent/consequential to the story line
Military SF at it's finest, that is - not strictly blood n guts and ray guns!

An excellent series of books. Enjoyed reading the progression of the heroes from Cadets to leaders of troops fighting a common foe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read
A good story, plot well crafted. I read the initial episode as a freebee on Amazon and paid for the following titles to follow the story through. The tale is a good one although the telling can be a little facile at times and proves a curious mix of British cultural reference seemingly pitched at an American audience (or at least in the style of a would-be Hollywood screenplay). None the less, I would recommend the series as an enjoyable and engrossing escape - I will certainly read the subsequent titles for pleasure as much as curiosity.
