About the author

Born in Redditch, England, to a solicitor and an ex-military man, one of Katherine "Kate" Macdonald's earliest memories was of watching her parents disappear behind the pages of a book and wanting to follow them. For her, books were little pocket dimensions that could be carried about, and the safest way to have a very real adventure.
Rather than rebel during her teenage years, she spent most of them locked up in her room, furiously writing down the hundreds of stories filling her head. Her little sister Kirsty served as her primary audience, and first fan. Without her, Macdonald would never have continued to write.
After completing a BA in English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, she moved to Exeter to train as an English teacher, and then to Kent to start her career. It was only after surviving a year of parenthood and a full-time job on less than six hours a night that she finally gained the courage to publish her most recent work, "The Rose and the Thorn" a retelling of Beauty and the Beast inspired by a dream of a girl surrounded by snow in a field of flowers.
At her heart, Macdonald is storyteller, and it is her dream to inspire others in the way that she has been inspired.
She currently lives in Devon with her manic 2-year-old, in a cabin in the woods.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2024This was a fun and refreshing Hades and Persephone retelling that mixes the fae, Greek mythology, and modern times together to form a story that is hard to put down.
I absolutely loved how MacDonald handled the ages of the main characters, the explanation of Cerberus, and the entire rewrite of the Greek gods. Hades is also unbelievably sweet and Sephy is a believable female lead who is infinitely likable.
I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2021Of course this is a Hades and Persephone retelling (of which there are fifty million out there) but Macdonald brings her own twist to it by blending Greek mythology with the fairies of the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. It's a fascinating mash-up that really drew me in.
The major events of the plot are awesome. There's plenty of surprises and twists. However, much of this book moved at a snail's pace for me. Unlike previous works of Macdonald's that I devoured in a day and had trouble setting down, I frequently found myself struggling to focus on Thief of Spring. The romance is definitely slow-burn and I can appreciate that. It just seems like the rest of the plot was also slow burn.
As always, Macdonald's writing is beautiful and lyrical. I'm not a huge fan of the pop culture references. Those have a way of aging a book that could otherwise be somewhat timeless. I don't know, that's a thing that's just not for me.
I have to give it a 4 but not the same ringing endorsement that I would give A Song of Sea and Shore or Of Snow and Scarlet. It's good. It's enjoyable. If you really, really love slow slow burn and books that are very focused on the actual romance and soft moments then you are going to love Thief of Spring.
I did receive this as a free ARC. My opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2025I couldn't put the book down. I loved this book so much. It's not the same as other Hades books I read, but this one was still so much fun to read. I loved the twist with this Hades and Persephone and cannot wait to read book 2.
If you're looking for spice, there wasn't any in this book other than a few make our sessions, but if you love the level of connection between Hades and Persephone it's totally worth reading!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2024Bought this book on March 6, started reading on March 7 and just finished it!
For me, I was totally devouring this story. I grew up really loving faerie lore and Greek mythology. Having it mixed here is like a dean for me. I really loved their slow burn romance and Persephone’s development. Hades is the classic bad boy (but not really) that always warms my heart. I throughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to buy Part 2. If you are into faerie lore, Greek mythology references, bad boy/cinnamon roll MMC, soft but strong FMC and slow burn romances, this is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024Enjoyed this first book I have read by the author. I would have liked more action in the middle of the book rather than the sweet nothings the two characters whispered but the author redeemed the story by the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2023I will always read a retelling of Hades and Persephone, they are my most beloved mythological characters.
I deeply enjoyed the story building throughout this story. The characters showed true growth and development. It allowed you to grow with them instead of just pondering what else could happen.
Persephone is a 17 year old girl who loves classical fairytales and her rooftop garden. She isn’t your typical teenager, she doesn’t want to go out and party. She prefers staying home with her books, tea, and hellish cat. Until one night, on Halloween, her friend drags her to a party. Things take a turn with a mysterious invitation and she gets more than she bargainers for.
Hades has a dangerous reputation of bloodshed and violence. Something about Persephone draws him to her and so their intertwined relationship and path starts to unfold. One kiss and one sip of wine was all it took for their story to begin.
Now these two must learn to cohabit for the next 7 months while not bearing their souls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, Seductive, Unputdownable
If you are about to purchase this book, do yourself a favour, and order the sequel in advance.
Kidnapped by Hades himself, Persephone is thrown into the darkly seductive faerie underworld to discover secrets that will change the way she sees the world forever.
The love child of faerie romance and ancient Greek mythology is a gorgeous, heart-stealing tale of polished dark princes, soft cinnamon rolls and gut wrenching twists that will have you on the knife's edge needing more. Replete with a stellar cast of your favourite Greek gods in ways you perhaps never quite imagined, but are grateful that someone did. Starring Sass: the Embodiment, Mommy Issues, and Pining (so much pining).
There are a lot of Hades and Persephone retellings out there, but whether you are a veteran or newcomer to the scene, this is one you absolutely cannot miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Retelling
"Every story needs a villain, and he looked like one."
THIEF OF SPRING is the first book in the FAERIES OF THE UNDERWORLD duology. I grabbed the paperback and later bought the hardcover edition special edition, because I couldn't resist the beautiful cover and I'm also curious about the extended epilogue.
This is a beautiful, fast-paced, Hades and Persephone retelling with a magical twist. The Greek Gods are real, but they are faeries, and nothing is as it seems.
In the first book, written in first person from the perspective of Persephone, we follow her as she gets "trapped" in the Underworld and led into a journey of self-discovery, love, lies, and betrayal. The romance between her and Hades is sweet, slow-burn, and angsty-my favorite! The book ends with a wonderful twist you will never see coming.
In general, I am a big fan of Macdonald's writing. Her prose is always so captivating, her characters are well-written, and her stories are the type of stories you just can't stop reading... All in all, I truly enjoyed this book and totally recommend it for romantasy lovers, and also those who enjoy a good slow-burn romance, some action, and a lot of twists. I am looking forward to reading the rest of Sephy's and Hade's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needs a movie!
I can’t tell you how badly I need these books to be turned into movies. This is the kind of Greek god movie I am here for, this could take in big bucks at the box office!

4.0 out of 5 stars An adorably soft romance
I went into this book knowing there wasn't going to be a massive amount of plot, and I think that helped to know up front. I did still want more plot, and there was definitely room for it, but I was also happy to just chill with Hades and Sephy and watch them be adorable with each other. It was sweet seeing the relationship grow, and I found the ending to be super intriguing, so I will certainly be reading the sequel!
I would love to have spent a bit more time getting to know the side characters, though, as in the other gods/high Fae. By the end, I couldn't distinguish between them all well enough to know who was on whose side so it was a bit chaotic. That was about the only issue I had with the story and, given how this one ends, I have no doubt that it will be rectified in the sequel.
