Hamlet (Vietnam Ground Zero Military Thrillers Book 14) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 605 ratings

Gerber’s Green Berets defend a hamlet in hostile territory! Perfect for fans of Andrew Watts, L. T. Ryan, Don Keith and George Wallace.

All hell is about to break loose in the Vietnam jungle…

Vietnam, 1968

American troops have been redeployed following the Tet offensive, leaving villages along the Cambodian border open to attack by Communist forces.

When a small hamlet is overrun by a Viet Cong assault force, U.S. high command are determined to rebuild the village as an example of their strategic hamlet concept – settlements that can take care of themselves once the military pull out.

U.S. Army Special Forces
Captain Mack Gerber and a crack team of Green Berets from the old Triple Nickel are dispatched to the hamlet. The plan is to arm and train the villagers to defend themselves against the VC.

Instead they find a demoralized population that want nothing to do with the Americans.

Meanwhile, as night falls, the enemy are gathering in the jungle and this time they mean to destroy the hamlet and everyone inside it.

Excellent writing style, and each book of the series has a unique plot that is interesting and well-thought-out, even if it is more than a little implausible. The issue I am beginning to have with the entire series is that the author is using common, repetitive actions as page filler. For example, he is constantly describing in far too much detail how helicopters take off, fly and land (as well as the discomforts of riding in cargo planes.) The constant description of the heat and humidity of Vietnam, detailed descriptions of the same defensive positions in camps - all designed to fill pages and stretch the book - are becoming quite tiresome. Very little development for the primary characters, but several pages are devoted early on to a character who is either going to die or simply disappear into the story, never to be heard about again.....
And DO NOT get me started on the "love scenes" described in the past few books! Tepid at best and sophomoric, awkward writing indicates the author either does not want to offend any readers (in which case he should leave the scenes out, no problem), or he is embarrassed to actually record the actions of the characters. In which case, he should again, leave the scene out.
As much as I enjoyed the first couple books in this series, I fear that this will be my last read. Simply stated, I've grown tired of reading the same, stale, routine actions that any soldier who spent more than 6 months in the service would recognize as daily activities - nothing interesting, fun or action-packed.

Well done, the common cover-up by the Generals and politics. Total BS, but nothing changes, wars go on, the young die needlessly, and the rich get richer.

Professional SF guys with years of experience and they still allow suspected VC into their AO? Oh and they were able to snuggle in sachel charges because no one searched them? These books went from being okay to political hit jobs on the SF soldiers and general staff.

If you like military thrillers, Eric is your man. This one really moved fast. Continuing characters keep you fully engrossed in the story line. What keeps me amazed is the politics of war.

3.0 out of 5 stars A return to the original enjoyable format..

The previous book was a mess, but the Hamlet is more like the first 12 in the series. It even has the somewhat gratuitous females Robin and Kit in it, hence only 3 stars.
