Hanging On: Sisters in a Small Town Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 674 ratings

Loving your sisters is easy. Watching them hurt is painful.

“…small town romance with wonderful characters. lots of drama and tons of love. It is women's fiction at its finest.”

According to everyone in her small town, Maggie Skatt was born to be a mother.

The Skatt sisters didn’t have a traditional upbringing: abandoned by their father, Maggie fought to keep the family together after the death of their mother. She raised her four sisters even after a teenage pregnancy and an early marriage gave her five daughters of her own. But through the challenges and sacrifices, Maggie always had Mike right there beside her.

When the unthinkable happens, Maggie is blindsided with grief. Heartbroken, she finds comfort at the family home and in her talks with Mike’s ghost, but soon the list of things she can’t bring herself to tell him begins to add up: things like grandbabies, their daughters’ teenage romances and nearly getting fired from work.

And Maggie can't find the way to tell Mike about the return of Ben Higgins, because how do you tell the ghost of your dead husband you want a second chance at love with another man?

But you can tell your sisters, and with Cat, Brenna, and Kayleigh’s help, Maggie might just be able to hang on and move on from the loss.

Hanging On is the second of the Sisters in a Small town series, heartwarming stories about love and loss and having sisters to pull you through.

From the Author

Hanging On is the second in my Sisters in a Small Town series. Like Coming Home, this was inspired by my family. Although my aunts don't want you to think they are anything like my Skatt sisters, I have a feeling they had much better adventures!

Holly Kerr wants everyone to have a happily ever after, full of fun banter and friends to talk about it with.

She writes fast-paced, sweet romantic comedies with the door shut, action chick lit about sassy Canadian super spies, and women’s fiction about families and small towns.

When she's not huddled in her writing cave, Holly likes to rewatch Ted Lasso and all the Marvel movies, attack the weeds in her many gardens, and watch her son and daughters play baseball, which has led to a side gig as a softball coach for the last ten years.

She prefers beach over mountains, won't touch coffee, and likes her martinis dirty, with extra olives.

If you happen to pass by her house in Toronto during happy hour, she'll invite you onto the porch for a glass of wine and a chat about what's in her Little Library.

As one of three sisters plus a sis-in-law, these books really hit home. I’ve now read the first two and I want the third. Each book is whole on its own, and they resolve without cliffhangers, but the characters are so engaging that they’re hard to say goodbye to. While they can stand alone (the tidbits that help give backstory are seamless and well done), they’re best read in order. Well-developed, complex characters, captivating storyline, and BONUS! truly great chapter intro quotations. I had to stop and write some of them down.

This book was excellent from the very beginning. The main character, Maggie, had a difficult life from a young age. She had to raise her sisters from a young age, because her step mom suffered from mental illness. Her husband died in an accident while she still had daughters of her own to raise. This book takes you on her challenging journey trying to move on. She talks to ghosts, which I don't really identify with, but otherwise I liked everything about the book.

I started with this book because I received it through a free service. I slogged through the first part of the book frustrated by the large number of characters and intertwining relationships. Read the book Coming Home first. This is a well written and good story. Start at the beginning, you'll be glad you did.

Couldn’t wait to get this second book in the series. Loving finding out more of the back stories and seeing how the sisters reconnect and support each other. Makes me think of how I loved reading “Little Women” and all the other books about the March sisters. You all are in luck to get to know these sisters!
