Awaken Online: Happy Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.8 out of 5 stars 2,882 ratings

Pain. Chaos. Happiness?

Dominic Hart was screwed.

Diagnosed with terminal cancer, no money for treatment, and an athletic scholarship hanging by a thread...he didn't have many options. But the university clinic had offered him a free video game. Some sort of "therapy", they said. A way to while away the hours until he kicked the bucket. Yay.

What Dom wasn't expecting was to get swindled by a surly casino owner right out of the gate. Or get dropped in a backwater hellhole voted the “number one worst starting location in Awaken Online". That might have been because a video game mafia controlled the city. Or maybe it was because even the plant life could kill you. Regardless, his shit luck had obviously tagged along for the ride.

But that's life. The odds are stacked in the house's favor, you're running out of chips, and you have to decide to hit or fold. For Dom, he decided to go all in. What did he really have to lose?

It's just his life and happiness hanging in the balance.

I LOVED this book! I've read all the AO books and this stands as one of my favorites. To be honest, the Jason books are the best - hands down. I love the characters, world and stories. I do understand why Travis is writing books outside of Jason - which builds the world. Finn (for me) were the worst books - they were sad, predictable, and drawn out. What Travis did with Happy in one book could have been done in one book with Finn.

As for Happy - we have a new God and a new Avatar! Unlike Finn, Dom (avatar in training) and Happy (new God) were funny, kind, determined, shrewd, and smart. I also liked how Dom never holds a grudge against a person until he truly gets to know them. Sean is a person we can all hate - just wait until you see what Cluck Cluck does to him! I also like how Dom finds an entirely new way to level - something no one else has done before - such as dying as many times as possible. As a person who loves the gym, I understood Dom!

Lastly, the story starts with Dom being diagnosed with a death sentence - incurable cancer. He's an uber athlete in his early 20's, playing football, and is extreme on his passion for health, nutrition, and fitness. My father just passed due to cancer and this was hard to start reading. However, don't let that stop you! As we've seen with all characters in AO, they learn how to overcome - against all odds - in a way you cannot predict. The point, this book is AWESOME, you must read it.

One Last (lastly, last?) thing - realize you're going to lose time. While we may not have the Cerillion AI helmet, Happy will be impossible to put down. I've barely been present the last few days - so worth it.

Great book! Very entertaining and end of book is epic! Thank you for another great book in the series. However we do not need additional side characters anymore to write books about, lol. Look forward to newest book in the series ;)

I have read all of the Awaken Online books and thoroughly enjoy them all, some more than others. I have always been more interested in Jason’s story truth be told, though I have liked the side stories. I have to say that Happy completely surpassed my expectations in every way. When I saw Travis was working on another character I was like, “damn, I really want more Jason”. Shortly after starting the book I was completely drawn in. Fantastic story and you can tell there was a lot of thought put into this book. Not only do I want more Dom but also the new characters introduced into the book I think will make for some great backstories later on. Seriously, hands down one of my favorite AO books to date! Keep up the amazing writing Travis, I can not wait for what you write next!

Of a writer and I will follow him to the ends of the earth as he continues to amaze us with the intricate weaving of these incredible characters in the Awaken Online world. I was a tad disappointed that the Jason arc wasn't released, and there was a new character being introduced, but then I remembered how much I wanted him to branch out in this world of AO. He certainly has and I am in awe all over again at his world building and amazing psyche into people's minds. I'm not a spoiler person, but will say this, if you like Lit Rpg this series will blow you away and is worth every penny. This book can stand alone, but after reading it you'll want to go back to where it all started, with Jason and the first AO book. Hold onto your butts and have many, many happy days immersed in the growing world of Awaken Online.

If you don't like spoilers, you shouldn't read this review. There is one issue that I'm about to rail on.

So, I've been reading Mr. Bagwell's books for a while. The series is fantastic, and I've thoroughly enjoyed every book. I looked forward to this book, and I read it the day it came out. And I found it... upsetting and irritating, at best.

Don't get me wrong: The writing is fine. The plot is fine. I saw that other people had issues with why a person wouldn't just re-roll to another area. I'm okay with the premise laid out in Bagwell's other books that if you re-roll, you have to wait several weeks to do so, so that wasn't an issue.

The issue that bothered me is that of the American healthcare system. This book is supposed to be based in the future. And if that's Bagwell's vision of the future, that young people would find that they had to die because healthcare is out of reach, if their only escape is a damned video game as they wait to die...

Healthcare costs in the U.S. are bad enough already. The thought of it being even worse is nauseating. I hope Mr. Bagwell is so wrong. I suspect he is not. This really isn't an indictment of his book, but an indictment of the possible future as he sees it. I hope he is so wrong.

This series is one of the greats, however this book singularly propels it to the position it is in. Happy is so amazing, and the characters are some of the best in the genre, so please read this book.

I love how each character in this series follows a concept/emotion and really explores what it means, gives it real, relevant meaning in the context of an exciting plot.
Several things said about the nature of happiness really struck a chord with me in this one.
I also love how none of the protagonists/avatars are what most would consider evil, except for that Light-aspect douche. Jason, Eliza, and Finn are all relatable, even as they are completely at odds with each other.
As much as I want everyone to just get along... I know it will be very entertaining watching as the avatars clash against each other.
When Dom inevitably decides to try for the bounty on Jason.
Or maybe it's not inevitable? This series has also surprised me a lot, and I really can't predict what will happen. Maybe the two will never meet, or maybe Dom will immediately join Jason and Finn as an ally.
I'm excited to read whatever comes next.

I don’t know why I put off reading this for so long. I think I liked it better than the main story. Absolutely worth reading this stand-alone slice of the AO world.

Amazing writing, each book is better than the previous one. Characters in this one and how it weaves into the main story are simply great, it's amazing to see how this series is growing and maturing, a pure pleasure to read!

This series proudly sits on my shelf next to books like "The Name of the Rose", "Black Company" series and "The Gargoyle". Big thanks to the author and can't wait for more!

Every time you think that Travis should bring more Jason to our lives and you have another of these side stories introducing the new Avatars and you just can't help loving them. Dom is now one of my favourite character. Wish to see him soon along with Jason. P.S. the ending will blow your mind.
