- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2014This book is an unusual combination that works well in this instance. Two different authors have teamed up to write two separate stories about twin sisters, Maggie and Matty, who find themselves separated by circumstance on opposite sides of the border during the Civil War. Due to their father’s death, these two sixteen year old sisters feel compelled to help support their mother and brother, whom they love dearly. The setting of both tales begins in the Fall of 1862. Both protagonists encounter physical and emotional trauma; both sisters succeed in rising to the occasion to assume control. They will each need to solve a mystery, navigate through romantic attachments, and survive the war.
In the first novella focusing on Maggie, we meet the twin who has traveled with her employer to a southern plantation in Tennessee. She is a servant girl employed by the Hamilton family. Soon the Union army comes to occupy the plantation; Maggie is the only person who has the strength of character to assume control. But the story does not so much revolve around the events of the war as much as the personal struggles of all the characters on both sides. It deals with their hopes and fears, racism, and family ties as well as the divide between the rich and poor. Maggie hopes to survive and someday be reunited with her own family.
The second story centers on Matty, a servant girl whose employer, General Worthington, has been sent to a fort in Illinois to train soldiers to fight for the Union. Her story rapidly switches to a mysterious piece of paper and Matty’s trickery to deceive a disabled bachelor named Colonel Cole Black into marrying her. The reader learns that she is remorseful for the deceit, but that she is determined that this letter and its information get into the right hands. This is the only way she could find to do so. There is danger for both of them now, and she fears that her solution might come about too late. Still, like her sister, Matty possesses a strong will and a determination to do the right thing, regardless of personal cost. The matter comes to a head at her father -in-law’s Christmas party resulting in lots of unexpected events and consequences.
The first of these stories about Maggie is more leisurely, filled with lots of well defined characters facing complex issues in treacherous times. Matty’s story is shorter; more intense with fewer characters, but a powerful, tighter knit plot. Even though the characters’ struggles and not the events of the Civil War are the focus of each story, the stories are well researched and documented in historical details. In less than one hundred fifty pages, the reader is treated to two tales of mystery, romance and historical fiction. I recommend this highly enjoyable work to young adults and adults who are interested in any of these genres.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2016HAZARDOUS UNIONS: TWO TALES IF A CIVIL WAR CHRISTMAS IS the stories of twin sisters, Matty (Mathilda) and Maggie (Magrethe) Becker. The sisters are torn apart by desperate conditions at the beginning of the Civil War. Maggie goes to a southern location in west Tennessee where she is the companion of Mrs. Hamilton and her step daughter Miss Patience Hamilton at the Bellevue plantation and Matty goes to Illinois and then Indiana, a northern location as a house maid for General and Mrs Worthington and their daughter Abigail, until Abby married a Senator. Even though the circumstances for each sister is different, one wonderful thing ties them to each other: the rearing by loving and wise parents.
Thinking back on their background as their stories unwind, the sisters are both capable of transforming the lives of the people they care deeply about. They each run into a sort of mystery, which they solve and, at the same time, fall in love. They witness a type of racism within the families they are involved with which reflects the thinking of the north and the south. The letters they write each other expresses their feelings and tells much about their lives and the times.
This novel was written by two outstanding authors, Alison Bruce & Kat Flannery. It is great for Civil War fans as well as readers who just enjoy a well-written historical romance. It holds your attention and is a quick read that you won't be able to put down until the end. All in all, this book is a delight to read for pleasure as well as for the information that is weaved into the story. I totally recommend this book for light, pleasure reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2013I loved the two main figures in these two stories. They are the sort of females that ought to rule the world: intelligent, witty, decisive and strong, yet blessed with all the "softer" traits too, kindness, generosity, love, loyalty. Although I am not normally a fan of anything romance, I loved both these tales because they are not typical. Infused with the history of the American civil war, witty discourse, and the trials of living during those times, the book is romantic and ultimately happy, but not predictable. Both Alison Bruce and Kat Flannery's styles incorporate vivid description, elevated vocabulary, and great characterization. Although the twin sisters in the two tales have their own voices, both styles of writing are similar - that is, extremely enjoyable. This book is a keeper.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2013This is a lovely romantic story of twin sisters living separate, yet equally challenging lives during the American Civil War. There is a bonus in that each sister’s tale is told apart from the other, much in the same way the sisters are physically distant from one another during times that did not afford them the luxury of remaining close to family. Both stories had sweet, happy endings and are particularly heartwarming to read during the Christmas season.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2013Alison and Kat have put together two separate stories about twin sisters Maggie and Matty.
Their experiences of war appear to run parallel to each other yet have so much in common.
The authors treat the subject of slavery honestly but compassionately.
The separation of the sisters from, not only each other, but their mother and brother will tug at your heart.
Beautifully written by both ladies and obviously well researched.
I highly recommend this book to those with a love of history, romance or intrigue. It is an excellent read and one you won't be disappointed with.
I wish both ladies the very best of success.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2014First half of book was excellent and well written by Alison Bruce. I really enjoyed it. However, the second half, written by Kat Flannery was unfortunately rather disappointing. Her story line needs some work.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Entertaining stories, with a nice mixture of adventure and romance.
Pleasing pairing of linked tales about twin sisters serving as maids to families divided by the conflict of the American Civil war.
The first tale is set in the South and the tension between occupying troops and the Southern household hosting them is portrayed well. Captain Stone and Maggy are appealing lead characters and Stones troops and Maggy's friends and employers are well written. The story is not lengthy but the author provides enough layers of descriptive background and insightful dialogue to avoid creating characters that are too sketchy.
The second tale is about Maggy's twin Matty. Again Matty and her love interest (the Colonel) are appealing characters but the adventure in this tale is more perilous as the conspirators they have to expose are truly nasty.
This tale has fewer main characters than the first and focuses more on the H&H growing in trust and affection, as their marriage is based on contrived circumstances and desperation.
Both stories are clean and each can be enjoyed without reading the other.
