Heart of Hades: A Hades and Persephone Retelling (Faeries of the Underworld Duology) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 78 ratings

He was doomed to perish at the exquisite lies of that damned mortal goddess, doomed to love her to the end of his days. A time would come when her face would fade from his memory if he found no way to capture it, but he would spend the rest of his life grasping for the feeling her smile elicited in him.

Forced to attend a ritual sacrifice on Samhain, Hades, a Prince of Faerie, instead claims the chosen victim as his own and spirits her away to his domain in the Underworld in order to save her life.

Her name is Persephone.

Unsure of her unconventional saviour's intentions, Persephone is initially reluctant to befriend him, and Hades is reluctant to draw her further into his dark world.

But as the feelings between them deepen, Hades finds himself torn between a vow he cannot break, a love that may soon break him.

Relive the romance and drama of "Thief of Spring" from Hades' POV. Although this can be read by itself, it is recommended that you read the original "Faeries of the Underworld" first.
Due to its large file size, this book may take longer to download

Born in Redditch, England, to a solicitor and an ex-military man, one of Katherine "Kate" Macdonald's earliest memories was of watching her parents disappear behind the pages of a book and wanting to follow them. For her, books were little pocket dimensions that could be carried about, and the safest way to have a very real adventure.

Rather than rebel during her teenage years, she spent most of them locked up in her room, furiously writing down the hundreds of stories filling her head. Her little sister Kirsty served as her primary audience, and first fan. Without her, Macdonald would never have continued to write.

After completing a BA in English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, she moved to Exeter to train as an English teacher, and then to Kent to start her career. It was only after surviving a year of parenthood and a full-time job on less than six hours a night that she finally gained the courage to publish her most recent work, "The Rose and the Thorn" a retelling of Beauty and the Beast inspired by a dream of a girl surrounded by snow in a field of flowers.

At her heart, Macdonald is storyteller, and it is her dream to inspire others in the way that she has been inspired.

She currently lives in Devon with her manic 2-year-old, in a cabin in the woods.

ARC: Hades
Greek Mythology Retelling ✅ Faeries ✅ Hades POV ✅ Love Story ✅ Unique ✅ I received the Thief of Spring & Queen of NIght ( Faeries of the Underworld Duology) by Katherine Macdonald as a christmas gift and binge read it. When I saw that an arc was available for Hades POV, I couldn't help myself. I loved Persephone’s POV and I knew I would love Hades. If you enjoy Heart of Hades then you should definitely read Persephone’s POV. The author’s ability to write a beautiful tortured boy’s love for Persephone just grips at the heart. I am a major mythology buff, especially Greek mythology and my favorites since I could remember are Hades & Persephone. To read a retelling told with a twist of Fae lore is so unique and exciting. I can’t help but be captivated all over again. Prince of Faeries, Hades has to attend a ritual sacrifice on Samhain. When he sees the one who is chosen to be the sacrifice. Hades claims her for himself, taking her to the Underworld. But his decision he made was to save her life. Now bought together; they begin to get closer and feelings deepen. The way Hades doesn’t expect good things to happen to him, he is so sweet and broken ugh my heart. Most people kept POVs to be the same story but i was happy to see despite the events being similar it's different at the same time. I can not wait to see if we get another POV for Hades. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Oh my goodness, I can hardly hold it together. I need to collect myself from all that is this book.

This book is EVERYTHING. It’s my favorite top 3 by MacDonald, because Hades’ POV is EVEN BETTER than Sephy’s.

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, I’m still reeling from the ending.

Hades’ POV is BEAUTIFUL and sooo poetic. He stitches stars with his words and poetry and I am so immersed in his tone and the way MacDonald writes him. I absolutely love him and would read *anything* from his POV. 😍

I was most surprised that there were still some surprises even after having read the first book from Sephy’s POV. And still a great deal of suspense! MacDonald does a great job teasing; barely grazing the surface of a topic and then pulling away. It’s enrapturing!

11/10 would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, fae, romance, magic, and *DEEP* heartfelt connections (not just surface fluff).

Love love love this book being told by Hades’ POV!

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I used this book to bribe me to finish my spring cleaning, and what a reward it was.

I love fae and Greek mythology, so the fact that Katherine Macdonald combined them into this delicious literary treat was absolutely genius. The juxtaposition of faeries with the Greek pantheon was quite literally divine and executed with impeccable worldbuilding.

The character work was magnificent. I adored this take on Hades, a cruel exterior masking a kind interior, and I relished the respect between him and Persephone. In a world that so often forces boys to be unfeeling and tough, it was a breath of fresh air to find such a sensitive, sweet soul. HEART OF HADES is about the masks we wear, and what rewards lurk underneath.

I liked hearing Hades’ side of the story with this, but I think the author could have given us more. It felt like a mirror of Persephone’s experience, when it should have felt like a whole new light coming to the story that made the original deeper. I definitely recommend the original duology.

EEEEE! Was my reaction when I saw the book was coming, and about 87 times while reading it. No spoilers, no spoilers. BUT anyone who read the Twilight series, remember how much you wanted Edward's perspective? Then when you got it... it... was... no.

This is everything you wanted. Everything.

Hades is one of my favorite of Kate’s characters. He’s so sweet and needs all of the hugs! I loved the original duology, and reading part one from Hades’ perspective was delightful! So much pining. So much sweetness. A highly enjoyable read, which complemented Thief of Spring well! Can’t wait for Heart of Tartarus, part two from Hades’ perspective!

Katherine Macdonald’s Heart of Hades is a wonderfully imaginative twist on one of my favorite Greek myths. It turns the situation on its head by incorporating Fae lore and making sure Hades is in no way the monster he often thinks he’s become. Chock-full of boy-falls-first pining, action, and intrigue, this book kept me captivated page after page.

Hades. Oh, sweet, tortured, broken, romantic Hades. I sincerely doubt anyone could read this book and not sympathize and root for him. He is a character bursting with emotion he fears showing, desperate for someone to care. He’s had horrible things happen to him, many by the hands of his own mother, and he fights for all he’s worth not to become like her or the other cruel members of his family. To do so, he focuses on the one bright spot he’s had since he was a young boy: Persephone. He cherishes her and wants nothing more than for her to be safe and happy. Any thought of being with her is nothing more than fantasy he can’t even fathom indulging because it hurts too much knowing it will never be … but then something happens to make it a possibility.

Persephone gets stuck in the underworld (not kidnapped, mind you, but trapped as a way to save her life, which is far more romantic). At first, she was a standoffish character, hard to know or relate to, but given her situation, it fit. Slowly, she bloomed into a sweet and sassy leading lady, who was no wallflower when danger was present. She was strong and feisty, every bit Hades’ equal, and I grew to really enjoy her as a character.

Put these two together and you get one amazing slow-burn romance in a fully developed and marvelous world. And the ending? Hold on to your hat! It’s a shocker of a cliffhanger that’s definitely going to make you scramble for the sequel when it comes out. Until then, Heart of Hades is a fantasy retelling sure to please any lover of Fae stories or Greek mythology.

Very poorly-written and doesn’t stay true to the original myth at all. If you’re age like 11-13 & looking for a tweeny-bopper fantasy love story this might be for you, but if you’re at all invested in Hades, Persephone, the original myth or Greek mythology in general, you’ll be disappointed within the first 10 pages.

I loved the first two books. Found them extremely inventive. But was not won over by this rewrite from Hades POV. It could have been done far better as a split pov in original books. Just was not different enough to warrant reading
