The Magnificent Adventures of Henry Hudson (The Age of Sail) Kindle Edition
Courage, ambition and treachery on the high seas… Perfect for fans of Andrew Lambert, Kevin Jackson, N. A. M. Rodger, and Eric Jay Dolin.
In June 1611, Henry Hudson, captain of the Discovery, his young son, and seven other crew members were forced into a small gig and set adrift amongst the ice floes of Hudson Bay. They were never seen again.
Shy and aloof, yet courageous and sometimes recklessly daring, English explorer and navigator Hudson made four momentous voyages in 1607, 1608, 1609, and 1610, journeys that greatly expanded geographical knowledge of the New World. Yet it was his obsessive search for the elusive northwest passage – a sea route that would open the way to the riches of the Orient – combined with his poor judge of character and inept leadership that would ultimately result in one of the most notorious events in maritime history.
Drawing on a wealth of contemporary material, including Hudson’s official ships’ logs and the private journal he kept during his voyages, Noel B. Gerson vividly brings to life the dramatic events that led to the enactment of the greatest crime on the high seas, mutiny, and the tragic fate of one of England’s foremost discoverer-adventurers.
The Magnificent Adventures of Henry Hudson masterfully combines the triumphant spirit of early seventeenth-century maritime adventure with the perilous nature of life at sea.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2023This book is well written, and very informational. It's A shame Henry did not a have the business sense and leadership abilities to go along with his exploration achievments.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024Few people know that the Hudson river , Hudson Bay and famous Hudson Bay company wee named after this famous explorer ; informative short read , entertaining as well
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024I live a few miles from the Hudson River and thought it would be fun to learn a little about the man that discovered it. I had no idea what i was in store for. Great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2024A quick read to learn about the life of a great explorer and visionary, fills a void in understanding our history.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2021Wish they had covered more of the trial of the mutineers. It would've been helpful and revealing. Other than that, good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2022This is a pretty fast read. Interesting and written well.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2024Many of the quotations attributed to Hudson or crew members are too good to be true. These are the authors own embellishments or fabrications. Sorry to disappoint. Gerson wrote both historical fiction and biographical novels, and evidently did not bother to draw a clear distinction between fact and imaginative elaboration. The historical record pertaining to Hudson's voyages can be murky, so it's extra frustrating to come across a writer that played fast and loose with the facts. This book should be labeled as historical fiction.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poco utile
Libro poco utile, privo di note, privo di robustezza storico-critica e di iconografia ma, del resto, di Hudson pochissimo si sa... e questo libro non colma il vuoto.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic !
I knew like most people the basics. But the author has delved deep to hash out the relationships, and battles of Hudsons life. He had more trouble with an english crew than all his crews of foreigners !
There was more than one journal to reference too. But important bits of Hudsons destroyed . We can only guess at some issues.
The epiloge of his sons and wife later lives really fills the missing piece on the jigsaw
marvellous !!
