- Linda Strong Reviews

"Her Last Breath is another twisty, stunning mystery thriller from author J. A. Schneider, where the evidence coils and turns like an eel on a hook. Mari goes from trauma to paranoia and back again, her instincts pushing her towards uncovering the blocked memories that could make or break the case, even as she doubts her senses, her mind, and who she can trust. Husband? Friends? Nobody? It's a rare pleasure to come across a mystery that's so hard to guess, and J. A. Schneider's books have a consistent winning streak on that score. Her plots go from strength to strength."

I was so impressed with J.A. Schneider’s first tale in her Kerri Blasco series, I immediately segued into book two, ‘Her Last Breath’. Like the original novel, this is a police procedural set in New York, featuring the homicide detectives we met beforehand, and, like book one, we, the readers, get to feel and sympathize with the victim. The tale is complex, so many twists and turns, so many suspects, yet Kerri’s intuitive detective work rises to the fore once again. I confess, I did work this one out before the end (probably because I was looking for the twist the author had provided), though that did not stop my enjoyment of the story for one instant.

I had started reading book one on Saturday morning. By Sunday evening I had started this one, and by nighttime Monday (late into the night I might add), I was reading the opening chapter of the third book in the series. Today is Wednesday (midday-ish) and that one had also succumbed to my binge reading – this author is that good! The sad news is that I have already read book 4 – so author Schneider, please get working on book five, (six, seven…) as soon as you can.

Original plot, fabulous three-dimensional characters and a fast-paced tale that will grab you and not let you dare rest until it’s shocking conclusion. Great read!

This was my first J.A. Schneider book, and I will look for more in the K. Blasco series. I loved the suspense and stayed up late reading too many nights, just couldn't stop. The surprise ending took a couple of twists, one I suspected and a big one that I certainly didn't. I do think the book could have used more careful editing, but it was more of a distraction and wasn't enough to put me off finishing the book.

This is another fine book by Joyce Schneider! I have read every single one of her books - in fact, I have re-read the entire Embryo series twice - that's how good her writing is - and I truly think that the Raney and Levine books (Embryo) should be developed into a television series - it's that good!!!

Her Last Breath grabs you right from the git go. You are kept in suspense for the entire book. The characters are very well developed - and it's nice to see our old friend Kerry Blasco from the Embryo series. There is, of course, a murder and the poor lady in question is riddled by fear and confusion which keeps you on the edge of your seat. I could not stop reading the book and finished it within a 24 hour period; this is a benchmark in all of Joyce's books. They are that good that you just can't put them down. The medical parts of the story are so well developed - I retired from the OR in a busy hospital and I know when I am being played and believe me, Joyce has her research down pat. The suspense is awesome.

I just cannot wait for Joyce Schneider's next book. Hope she is typing away as I speak here!!!

Amazingly good. 3rd book I've read by this author and they've all been great. Very fast paced, tense, thrilling, great characters and a surprise ending. The writing is just petfect, you feel the tense scared moments that Mari feels. I love the way all her books make you feel as if you are there with the victim, wanting to help and solve the mystery. It's rare that an author writes who is so in touch with making the story so very real.
I'd actually give this book 10 stars!

There was just enough to hold my interest in "Her Last Breath," but just barely, and for a number of reasons.

I have read another of author J. A, Schneider's Kerri Blasco detective series, and it was dismaying to see some of the same themes. Painfully obvious is the "Let's-not-believe-Kerri's-hunches," practiced to the point of absurdity with her boss and partner/boyfriend. While this may work once, going to the same well again only damages the credibility of the characters.

The characters themselves are all fairly one-dimensional, and while I don't mind a plot-driven story, the plot in this book is not strong enough to drive the reader to continue turning pages. The ultimate reveal stretched believability to a breaking point.

More bothersome was the inefficient editing, which included some baffling images. Descriptions such as "...mouth open dribbling caked blood..." convey separate messages (caked liquids won't dribble). I struggled with the constant use of colloquialisms and questionable verbiage. If the book was in first person throughout, using them would have made more sense. Spreading them throughout the book interrupted the flow of the reading (A few examples: "A receptionist fast called an associate..." or "...Mari put the beer now hers down and finally looked at him..." or "He took the teddy bear from her and went aww"). One would hope that an editor would have caught these before publication, or perhaps spotted the nearly identical conversations in Chapters 8 and 9 between Mari and Ted concerning Mari being drugged.

On the good side, Detective Blasco is a likable character and one can't help but jump in her corner and wish her all the best. She is that ray of sunshine when all hope seems to be flying out the window, and like a dog with a favorite bone, will continue to worry it until she finds what she is looking for. Ms. Schneider keeps readers guessing throughout the book and drops enough red herrings to keep us in the dark until the very end. If you are looking for a quick read that will still allow you to set it down from time to time, this is the book for you. Three stars.

I'd never heard of this author before finding this novel on Book Bub, but I'd definitely like to see more of her work. It was one of the better murder mysteries that I've read recently, and kept me guessing about who the actual killer was. I'm easily bored, and frequently abandon books, but not this one.I didn't want to quit until I found out who the culprit was, and why they did it, so I read it in a single evening.

Wow Wow Wow.Once you start this book you will read it till you finished it. An edge of your seat thriller. I love how you really cannot work out who is responsible..The characters are so well drawn and you want to know how it ends, but you don't want to the story to finish. I just love the female detective Kerri ,her character is really beginning to develop in this series. Joyce Schneider has really excelled in this second book

Imagine waking up in a stranger's bed covered in blood not your blood, but of the naked man laying beside you, dead, with a knife sticking out of his chest. A knife which, has your fingerprints on it. That is exactly how Mari's morning started. Was Mari responsible for this man's death?

This is the second book featuring Detective Kerri Blasco as the main protagonist after featuring in the "Rainey & Levine Embryo" thrillers.

The characters are well developed and there are plenty of twists and turns keeping you guessing what happened that night.

These books are perfect for all people who love thriller books. I personally loved the set up of this book with shorted chapters than usual as it allows full chapters to be read in shorter periods of time.

Another great story Joyce, can't wait to see what's in store for Blasco next. These stories (as with Embryo) get stronger everytime!

I have received a copy of this book before release in exchange for an honest review

Loved this book from paragraph one.
Very good strong, well developed characters. Didn't seem to matter that I hadn't read book 1. I will be though! I read this in about a day and a half, work gets in the way. It charges along at breakneck speed, with lots of red herrings.
I will definitely be reading more of this series, especially after reading the first few chapters of book 3 here. I am hooked. Do I read book 3 first or go back to book 1?

At first I wasn't sure I liked the writing style of this author but I sure am glad I stuck with this book!
It certainly lives up to the many reviews noted I “About this book.” It truly is “intense”, “thrilling”, “stunning”, and full of “non-stop action and suspense”.
It has a new and refreshing story line, great character development and many characters I hope to see in future books.
So despite my initial misgivings, I'm actually looking forward to reading more from Joyce Anne Schneider!!
