Higgins (The Interrogators Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 848 ratings

The 1983 bombing in Beirut changed the way the United States viewed terrorism. Inside the CIA, changes had to be made. At the center of it all is Dr. Alvin Higgins, an awkward analyst with a dream to be part of the solution. Before he joined C. G. Cooper's Corps Justice tales he had a beginning. This is his story, how he came to the CIA as a bookworm, a green recruit tagged as the one who would fail. Find out how this fish out of water began his march to greatness by impressing his peers with his intellect and humanity, all while building an interrogation apparatus that would support the CIA's efforts in the decades to come.

A portion of sales of each of my books goes to support Operation C4, an initiative I founded that recognizes and empowers our future leaders.

WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS

Fiction has the power to change lives.

Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.

But there are messages within the messages.

There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.

Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.

This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.

THE LOWDOWN

Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.

In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.

In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

Terrific back-story

Terrific back-story
Dr. Higgins has always been an enigma. Now we are seeing some back story on how he got to where he is with the Jefferson Group. Hopefully, this will also spawn a series (however small) on Cal Sr. Don't start this book unless you have time to finish it. You get pulled in from page 1. Hurry and write faster Carlos!

I read the 20 (waiting for the last two) Corps Justice and all the way through kept hoping there would be more personal info about the characters — then I found the four Daniel Briggs books and was so excited. When I got into the First thru Fourth it was so much better having read the Briggs series. I downloaded Higgins sample, but had to order the paperback because at the time Kindle was only available with Unlimited Amazon. Just found it available on Kindle along with God-Given about the Top. What’s next.

A few years ago, I stumbled upon the first of the Corps Justice series, and haven't been able to resist Cooper's books since then.

Higgins is a sort of prequel to how Dr. Alvin Higgins became part of the Corps Justice 'family of heroes.' [My term, not theirs.]

As with all of Cooper's books, the characters are expertly developed and crafted individually, with no duplications. This becomes a more difficult task when you see how many books are now in this series, along with its off-shoots.

As always, the plot development is superb and, combined with the characters, ensures a book which I wasn't able to put down ... except to go to sleep. And then I delayed sleep so I could read just one more chapter; just one more page; just one more ...

If you've read C. G. Cooper's books already, you won't be disappointed in the least. if you haven't read anything by Cooper yet, you're in for a wonderful surprise.

Read them all; take your time, we'll wait for you to write your own review.

    Enjoy!

Enjoyed the book very much. Liked Higgens in the other books. Now I like him more. Only complaint is that the sequence of books are not listed correctly in Kindle. If there is no reference at the end of a series you have to search. When you read about 3 books a week titles are forgotten. Probably the fault of Amazon.

The CIA is trying g a new program. A different type of obtaining information. More of a mental game instead of a physical confrontation. An elite group of individuals are hand picked for this team. Mostly from within the CIA ranks, but two are not. One is doctor, two PHD'S. The other a seasoned detective. The only female. These are the two handpicked attendees with the most promise. The handpicked team of four are given a special mission and are sent to the middle east to interrogate a captured terrorist. What ensues is a captivating story of team work with different personalities which at time conflict with each other but. A strong bonding occurs. Another excellent read by C.G. Cooper!!

Higgins is a team member in Cooper's main series line. The author has now given us HIggen's backstory while he is training with the CIA and the start of info on how he came to meet do what he does so well and meet with Team Corps Justice. As an older man, Higgins is very confident and super capable. It felt strange to see him hesitant and unsure of himself in this story from his early days, even though he has 2 doctors degrees. The story was exciting and interesting. I can't wait for the next book to see where it goes and to see how Higgins gets to be confident in his abilities. He reminds me of Sherlock Holmes in his ability to put together tiny hints of information to answer questions.

I had often wondered about the origins of Higgins story. Still, even in this I feel there is much more to tell, many more nuances to learn. How the tight bond was formed. So many more questions to be answered. Higgins 2 perhaps?

Well CG Cooper has delivered another book that I simply had to sit down and read until the end. I promised myself that this time I would do in smaller sessions so the book would last longer. Yeah right! I loved learning all about Higgins and look forward to hearing more about his adventures. I highly recommend this book. Way to go Carlos.

5.0 out of 5 stars It only takes a sharp mind, and a fair amount of patience, to get anyone to do what you want.

Interrogation analyst and psychologist, Dr Alvin Higgins has two PhDs but he has never really fitted in; he hopes a new job might be the answer. He wants to use his natural talent, for problem solving, for the greater good. During his trial, he realises he sticks out like a sore thumb! The recruits must do what they are told, without question. Unlike the experienced field agents, Alvin is a problem solver and prefers to “Observe, Calculate, Understand and Predict” in order to see through people’s facades.

Another fast paced 5 star story from C.G. Cooper and the first in his new Interrogators series, written with Karen Rought, l liked how it revealed background information about Alvin Higgins, whom we had already met in the Corps Justice series, while providing vivid details, e.g. a “nose like a freak fungus” and “a voice like oily soap”. I was engaged from start to finish, reading long into the night. With the way forward hinted at, I can hardly wait to read the next book in this series!

It is an interesting book giving an insight into psychological interrogation methods preferred by Alvin Higgins. It is the story of how he first joined the CIA and met Calvin Stokes. It is not as action packed as some but still a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good pre-Corps Justice book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 29, 2020
Most “prequel” stories are weaker than the main series. This book is surprisingly good.

The interest is the development of the relations between the characters: following stagnant failure by old school aggressive CIA, which makes the KGB seem masters of espionage, the CIA tries to introduce a human psychology to obtain information, against the resistance of incumbents. Conversely the intellectual Dr Higgins has to learn the benefits of team work and other skills.

The character of Dr Higgins as a clumsy ‘nerd’ is rather overdone, and the terrorist master mind is too humane (a change from being portrayed as a savage).

Overall a different approach and it works.
