A sparkling romantic adventure set in Regency England! Perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.
Can Felicity uncover the secrets of her past?
1806, England
Orphaned and with little inheritance, for years Felicity Temple has earned her keep as a schoolmistress at an academy for young ladies and has never mixed with the Ton.
However, when she is taken out of the academy by her guardian — the devious Lord Maskery — Felicity is thrust into respectable society with little preparation.
At her first party, the cynical Raoul, Lord Lynchmere wins Felicity’s company for the evening in a mock auction. But to her horror, by the end of the night it becomes apparent that her guardian has abandoned her.
Destitute and with no memories of any family besides her deceased father, Felicity is forced to turn to Raoul for aid.
Concerned for her welfare, Raoul vows to help Felicity out of her predicament and discover what has become of her guardian.
But it soon becomes clear that there is more to Felicity’s background than meets the eye. Their curiosity piqued, she and Raoul are drawn into an impromptu quest to uncover the truth about her mysterious origins…

About the author

Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.
Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.
Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.
Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2024This was a delightful story with unpredicted twists and turns. It made me laugh and cry...tears of both sadness & joy!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2022I liked this book better than the other books.
This book was more enjoyable as it started out with the auction and showed that Felicity had a mind and independence, and was not going to depend on anyone but herself in the end.
Of course she had to have help from Raoul to get to her destination, but he let her have her independence also.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2024This was another winning book. Felicity didn't fit the character of a school mistress, but the marquis certainly fit his role. The ending was explosive.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024Absolutely one of my favorite authors and this book is no exception! Light, fun and well written with great detail to the Regency period!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2021I enjoyed this story and had to keep reading to discover what would happen next. Great characterizations, mystery, humor and surprising twists.

Rating: 3 sweet stars
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.
His Auction Prize is the first book I read by this author. I really liked the premise of it. It was a very sweet and slow burn romance between Felicity and Raoul. We go along with them on a quest to find out the truth about Felicity's past. You can tell that there is some attraction between them but it's not approached until close to the very end of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2023The story itself was fine. I found the heroine somewhat tiresome since all she knew how to do was have tantrums. However I fail to understand why the author felt the need to decribe feelings in the groin and crotch. I have deleted and will try to remember that she is an author to avoid in the future. NOT TRADITIONAL REGENCY.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2021There have been the damsel in distress themes written before, but this book gave a new twist for a lady to find herself in distress. I enjoyed the read and was glad that this author also introduced Brides by Chance 9 and 10 at the same time as they continue with characters introduced in this book. Keep reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and well-written
An enjoyable period romance. The characters are well-drawn and it is based on good research of the period. A thoroughly enjoyable read for relaxation and escape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique storyline
I enjoyed reading this well-spun story. A genteel lady finding herself destitute is not an uncommon aspect in HR. How Felicity finds herself so and makes the acquaintance of Raoul is unusual.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful
The way these two characters spar and banter is fabulous. The two are funny, warm-hearted, strong-willed people, yet each appreciates the other’s personality, flaws and all. It’s a delightful slow-burn romance that starts badly, gets worse, and then plunges away in pursuit of a mystery. Absolutely feat read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish this one
I actually couldn't get past half way. The characters acted quite out of character for the era and the Americanisms (e.g. cream in coffee) were utterly annoying. The story wasn't interesting enough to make it worth persisting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story
This was a new author for me and what a surprise. This is a well written book starting from an intriguing beginning and developing into an interesting mystery and finally a believable love story. The two main characters are likeable and I quickly wanted them to find happiness. Often in regency romances the heroine is very forthright and independent and it is not always believable as to why she is so different from how many young women would have been brought up to be. In this case the author spends time to build the heroines character into a believable whole. It is easy to see how her experiences had formed her character so that her behaviour seemed realistic. I look forward to reading more by this author.
